not a good vibe there, verging on the rough with rude barstaff. Didn't feel welcome there from the onset. The Jam night there consists of 'musicians' churning out the kind of blues rock that could be found in any redneck pub in this country.

The Evening Star, Brighton

This is a pub I wish I had discovered a long time ago. I've been near Brighton station so many times but always neglected surrey street as all it appeared to have was a few houses and a sex fetish shop!
Now this is somewhere I make an effort to go to reguarly, not just for the large range of quality beers(real ale, the odd quality lager or 2(including one organic) and belgium- many on rotation) but also for its general 'brighton' atmosphere that is getting lost in many pubs in the city, now that many formely characterful pubs have been given the chrome and leather treatment (not a bad thing per se, but getting a bit ubiquitous nowadays)
I've never been able to get a seat inside, as it is often packed to the nines with proper beer lovers, but has adequate seating outside where many a mirthful conversation has taken place.
What is also good is you can sample the beers in small glasses before commiting yourself to a pint, this is good as with the variety of tastes on offer, you want to know you're getting. Service is friendly and I'd recommend this pub to almost anyone that appreciates quality beer, beard or no beard.
