Just an average guy, based in London, travel the UK a fair bit on work stuff (suit type - yech !), enjoy beer and pubs, but not a CAMRA snob, tend to prefer atmosphere over say the latest fad in casked 'Dogfondler' by Nanny Ogg. A halfway to decent nosh being available is a definite bonus.
Generally go for boozers where I can hang out with either my girlfriend (and she won't get felt up), or my mates, or indeed both. Oh and within staggering distance of home or hotel is always good !

The White Swan, Wickford
9/10 (for the area)
Spent two weeks in Wickford on work (ending this week), lucky enough to have my girlfriend with me, but finding the right boozer � jeez ! Pub #1, in 30 mins we saw 2 apparent deals going down (car park, then the gents), also full of Chavs, Chavettes, even Chavlettes ! Pub #2, full of Chantelle (sp?) spotters or wannabe�s.
Swans maybe a bit tatty round the edges (just needs a lick of paint etc), but the staff are friendly and attentive, beer not half bad (well kept & served), better yet the locals are ace. Where else can you find a pub, rammed with customers around the bar area, but they make way for you when you need a refill, also don�t make you think of �Whicker Man� when you step through the door ?
As for the pool table; fair enough, there are tables near it, but I heard �excuse me mate� so many times, my reaction became �Pavlovian� � just move to the other bar, when there�s killer pool going on !
