Man of Ross Inn, Ross-on-Wye

Walked around town on a rainy Aug bank hol Friday before plumping for the Man of Ross. Their confident publicity around their fish dishes lured us in - and the fish and chips was very tasty indeed. Nice batter with black pepper in it, and good chips. The Doom Bar (yes, now a bit overexposed, but still tasty) was fine.

They were in the process of getting set up for a cider festival. The barman explained the ciders to a fellow patron in some detail, concluding "now this one's a blackcurrant cider, that's more of a woman's drink". Made me chuckle.

Slight aroma of cleaning product, and piped local radio in the 'small 'dining room', but we enjoyed our grub along with the convivial surroundings. You could do far worse.

The Hand and Shears, Barbican

Bar staff fine and attentive; beer selection a bit limited; lovely little building but shame about the suited and booted clientele, who probably spend more money than I do there, but were, well, a bit annoying.

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

Mixed reviews left me in a bit of a quandary when choosing a Wapping pub for a Father's Day lunch. Plumped for the Ramsgate in the end - and we weren't disappointed. A genuinely yummy pint of Doom Bar (Youngs, Pride, HPA also on offer) and a tasty carvery (pork the pick of the three meats on offer). Friendly landlord too.

Perhaps not the East End den of iniquity that it once was, and maybe better for a Sunday afternoon than last orders on a boozy Friday, but we left satisfied.
