The Bell and Crown, Zeals

We ate at the Bell and Crown quite recently and had an excellent meal with very good service. We thought that although not cheap, it offered good value and we will certainly return again soon, it being fairly close to where we live.

The Fox and Hounds, East Knoyle

Possibly one of the most disappointing meals that we have had for a long time. We were recommended the Fox and Hounds as a good place to eat but it fell well short of expectations. The starter was moderate and lost on a large plate with a lettuce leaf and a quarter of a tomato as a poor excuse for a salad. The duck that we ordered for the main course was over-cooked, gristly and very tough, inedible in fact. The broccoli was hard and hadn't been in water for more than a few minutes. We like al dente but not raw. The overall service was poor and after receiving our mains we did not receive a visit from anyone to see if all was OK. When the barman came to clear an adjoining table I told him about the poor main course and said I would speak again at the end of the meal. I thought that one of the waiting staff was scruffily dressed and with trousers that looked like they needed a wash. Overall a very disappointing experience and we shall not return to the pub again.
