The Portland Hotel, Southport

Allthough clean it is in need of a lick of paint to cover the post smoking ban brown stains, No food and only one cask ale. But what a warm and friendy place. I visit Southport a couple of times in the year and I always spend my evening there. It has a huge lounge which is elaboratly decorated, you can tell this was a grand hotel not so long ago. Plenty of decor details and wall art to keep you eyes intereseted. more importantly the beer is well kept, We drank Deuchars last visit and very well priced at �2.40. As I say, no food but in the last two visits we asked if we could buy chinese food and eat it in the pub. Not only did they allow us, they gave us plates and we tucked into our feast in the bar area which we had to ourselfs. This place is busier in the day i'm told, evenings tend to be quieter, but the locals are still super freindly, maybe too much so if you don't get on with people, but if you do, then this is a great place to have a great evening and a laugh. If the people dont keep you entertained enough It has a few large TV's that are well placed to watch sports, pool table, and several darts boards. And if you are very lucky you can catch one of their darts evenings with invited darts pro's and live music. Not many real pubs like this now, I think it's a real treasure
