As an avid Jazz and Real Ale fan with a fervid desire to grab any microphone if there's a chance to sing, not Karaoke for the kids, but the old music pubs with a duo/trio of talented musicians. The Palm Tree off Roman Road in the Eastend is one such place, but they are becoming harder to find with West London, unless you're in the know, impossible to find.Pubs don't promote "singers nights" although there are exceptions, Kevin who ran The Rising Sun in Richmond Rd, Twickenham, did a fantastic job of promoting Singers, Jazz Bands, and Variety. His food was top notch and plenty of it.But alas as so often is the case his overheads were crippling. So if any like minded Squire knows of of such pubs, please pass it on.Thanks.

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

What to add to all the great reviews, they say it all. Get there early to stand a chance of a seat. Great friendly intelligent crowd. The beer is very well kept, the food splendid, the staff are simply the best, helpful and friendly. This pub is run by a landlady who knows the business and puts every effort into making it the success story that it is.

The Red Lion, Pall Mall

My son was hoping to get a job in St James, this is the 1st pub i took him to,as it has been a great watering hole for myself and friends for years. You need to be a bit of a gymnast to get down stairs for the gents, but if you can do it, you can walk home safetly. Good real ale, genuine feel to the pub, no themed crap here. The after work suits can be a bore, trying to out pontificate each other, but they are easy to ignore. There's a TV in the corner if you're stuck for company. There are a few very good pubs in the area, but generally we walk pass them by and go to the Red Lion. A small but great pub. The staff are polite and efficient, but do need to brush up on their people skills, but we can all be accused of that from time to time.
