The Mount Pleasant Inn, Dawlish Warren

We were staying in Dawlish Warren, and tried this place last night. It was a Weds, and around 645pm. Place was quiet. Unlike some other places, this didn't have the mass-produced menu feel to it. We ordered the potato skins and some olives as starter. we;;-presented skins, but maybe a bit overcooked, and the blue-cheese dip was a little intense. For mains, I had gammon steak, and got a large, thick, juciy steak. Chips were fair. My wife had the canelloni, which was also tasy (but why would pasta come with chips and peas?!). The kids had the usual meals: chicken nuggets, and turkey dinosaur. Standard stuff, but they finished it all. Decent, if unspectacular food.

One of the best things, though, was the great view over the bay! We will probably try it again before we go home.

The Boathouse Tavern and Grill, Dawlish Warren

We were staying nearby and tried the Boathouse for our evening meal. How sorry we were! We ordered two adult and two child meals, and were sitting upstairs. This place is advertised as having a great atmosphere, with "free" children's play area. Firstly, the atmosphere was non-existent - tired, out-dated decor all around, with dirty tables, and toilets which were poor. The children's play area was indeed free - but was a small, box-like soft-play structure, overloaded with kids of all ages, and not at all clean. This, of course, wouldn't have mattered if the food had been anywhere near decent. It wasn't. It arrived after quite a wait, and looked as if it had been literally thrown onto the plate. I had the smothered chicken - the accompanying fries had been poured on top, landing on the chicken sauce. I say "sauce", because it wasn't so much a sauce as a hot grease! The chicken was tough, and inedible. I managed to eat some of the standard, frozen, fries. The kids' meals were similar standard out-of-the freezer chicken nuggets and chips.

We won't be going back, and wouldn't recommend it!o
