The Screes Inn, Nether Wasdale

27 Oct 2009. Tried the Screes Inn for some food and ale. Service was fantastic by breathtakingly beautiful Irish staff and the food was on our table in no time but freshly prepared. Food selection was terrific and affordable and the quality was 100% + with imaginative fresh vegetables of the season and generous if not over the top portions. My partner must have had 1lb of the most succulent local lamb on her plate. Lassagne, a boring let down in most pubs, was top class with a side dish of lovely jacket new potatoes that you could eat like sweets and an imaginative salad. Can also recommend the whole grilled mackerel, served with deightful little parsnips etc. and the tagliatelli with optional smoked salmon garnish. All so good we returned the next night. Two very tasty filling meals with two ales at about 20 all in. We will be back next year.

Beers, this is where this pub lost a point ( more if the food had not been so exceptional). Most of the draught beers were from Manchester! Yes I know Manchester gets it's water from the Lake District but Mancherter beer in Cumbria..UGH. There was only one Cumbrian ale on tap and none at all the following night, so I just had to make do with Guinness. I do hope they ditch the inappropriate Manchester ales and contract for supply to Jennings for next year and I, for one, will drink at least three times as much.

P.S. Toilets were the cleanest in Cumbria. Well done.
