The Prince of Wales, Shrewsbury

Proper community type pub with numerous sports teams and a strong affiliation to Shrewsbury Town Football Club. Excellent real ales although usually served slightly colder than average. However this seems to suit the character of the St Austell's Tribute and makes it more refreshing especially in the summer months. Great decked area at rear overlooking the bowling green. Definitely a locals pub but not unwelcoming. How pubs used to be, yes it is dated (especially the furniture and decor) but a hub of the community serving top quality ales.

The Wheatsheaf, Shrewsbury

Reasonable selection of real ales but somewhat limited in that all from the Marstons 'stable' so usual suspects such as Sneck Lifter and Cumberland Ale represented. None of them bad ales by any means but all a little predictable. Friendly comfortable pub though and on the night we visited we were treated to top quality live music from a local blues band.

The Coach and Horses, Shrewsbury

Perfunctory welcome and service from male behind bar, Phoenix Arizona in good condition. Rather cold and uncomfortable in front area of pub. Was going to order a second pint and try one of the other real ales available when the male who had served us appeared behind the bar eating what appeared to be some kind of crisps or nuts from a packet. This took place in full view of customers right in the middle of the bar. Just as I was thinking I may be over-reacting somewhat and that I should just go ahead and order another drink, I was then astounded as the male in question noisily sucked his fingers and rubbed his hands together. My wife advised me to order another ale but go to another section of the bar to avoid being served by the male with the poor standards of hygiene. However at that point he opened another packet and was soon joined by two females who both also ate from the packet (all three still behind the bar). We left!
