The Salamander, Bath

The Bath Ales are what attracted me to this pub, and the fact that they are listed in the Good Beer Guide (2005 vintage). The beer certainly didn't disappoint as it was first rate! What started out as a quiet drink with the wife, soon descended in to a bustling drinking establishment full of students. Nothing wrong with that of course - just not what we wanted at the time, so we made our way to a more spacious pub to continue the art of quiet conversation. For this reason, I can't quite fathom the comments regarding the quietness. No evidence of that on a Friday night!

Gascoyne Place, Bath

Perhaps now that I've matured beyond the 10 pints in an evening mentality, my tastes have changed. My wife and I had to the good fortune to find this pub having been crowded out of The Salamander previously. The beer on tap was very good Bellringer by Abbey Ales, and the winelist included some unusual wines by the glass - Indian wine anybody?

We were so impressed with what we found, that we went back the next for a lovely meal. I have to say that the downstairs bar was very crowded compared to the spacious unstairs dining area. The pub employs a doorman to keep the plebs out, which was an encouraging sign.

Definitely worth a look.

White Horse Inn, Keswick

This pub is under a new licensee for the better. We called in for a beer after a particularly wet walk through the fells. The hospitality and beer were superb. We were so impressed we came back for dinner the following evening which was superb value for the money, with large portions of good pub grub.

We were there for the jazz band who at the time of writing play on Saturday nights. The music was more popular hits than jazz, which is great for my musical taste buds. We all had a such a great time that we had to wrench ourselves out to go back to the campsite.

This is a nice pub, with a landlord doing his best to undo all the wrong of the previous tennant. I do hope that they go from strength to strength.
