Profile information

I'm an occasional beer drinker who likes to try different pubs and beers, especially on holiday. I'm not too keen on completely gastro pubs where you are asked "Will you be dining with us tonight sir".

The Sun Inn, Buxton

We found The Old Sun atmosphere pretty average. The range of ales was large, but the condition was only just acceptable and the price was high.
My Wife's cajun chicken was OK, but my 'light bite' beef steak was about 5mm thick, so any attempt to cook it other than well done was doomed to failure.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, Castleton

A terrific pub with a large range of ales, all very well kept. I needed two visits to get through them all. The bar staff were friendy and helpful (even reducing the head for a simple southerner). We didn't feel as though food was being thrust at us, but we did have a very good meal on the second visit. As to atmosphere, perhaps it depends on the number of customers and their demeanour. I spent a happy 10 minutes chatting to the barman and a yorkshireman who was a Huddersfield supporter.

The Monsal Head Hotel, Monsal Head

A great place to go after a walk along the Monsal Trail. The Stables Bar is partitioned (probably the old stalls) so that it felt comfortable in the bare wood furnishings; neither isolated nor in a crowd. There were a number of well kept ales available. I didn't find them expensive. The barman manfully did his best, but could have done with some help. My wife and I had snacks which were well prepared and also not expensive.
