The Volunteer, Sutton Abinger

Visited The Volunteer last night after an absence of 2 years to find it under new ownership. What a difference, friendly welcome and a roaring fire. Great selection of beers, the PIckled Pheasant (beer!) went down very well. The smoked haddock on mash with creamy spinach was both very tasty and plentiful. The rolled chicken breast was also very good. Nice to be in a pub with a pub atmosphere rather than a restaurant atmosphere. This will be our preferred eating place in the Surrey Hills if this standard is maintained

The Royal Oak, Holmbury St Mary

I've been visiting this pub regularly for 15 years. To me it's going through it's worst phase of ownership. Food is medicocre as is the beer. I have been there on occasion when all hand pumps have been off. Better to try the Kings Head around the corner now under new ownership or The Volunteer just up the road also under new ownership.
