The Star Inn, St Just

An excellent pub with superb beer. The locals are very friendly. Monday nights are fantastic - get there early for terrific atmosphere and music from an impromptu band of players from all age groups.

The Miners Arms, Penzance

It closed a long time ago.

Kings Arms, St Just

Hopeless pub. It needs a proper bar. Excellent beer. Probably very good for food, which is the obvious priority here.

Radjel Inn, Pendeen

Unfortunately, I don't like the smell of dog even if it is called Harriet. Wrong time for a visit perhaps - afternoon - but I really disliked this place. Get yourself down the road to the North!

North Inn, Pendeen

Good friendly pub. Excellent beer. Good food. We kept returning.

The Sloop Inn, St Ives

This place is a real find. The staff are a waste of space; seating outside is ruined by the pub's notices which tell everyone what they are not allowed to do; the atmosphere inside was non-existent; and to top it all the prices are ridiculous.
On the wall it says: circa 1312
I later realised that 13.12 is the average price for 2 drinks.
Two residents of St Ives have told me that local opinion is that the Sloop will die within a couple of years. One was a retired publican. They both go out of town for a pint.

The Rum and Crab Shack, St Ives

So not a pub then.

The Bluffs, Hayle

Great views are the only plus point. No beer, horrible looking food (not tasted by me) and full of prams and pushchairs and a zoo-full of screaming kids.
Long may their parents frequent dumps like this.

Cornish Arms, Hayle

2pm on a hot summer's day - 1 person in the pub - a bit worrying, but everyone was at the beach.
Beer was good - the bar girl very pleasant. The food was excellent and very reasonable. I could not finish the 6 tons of ham. I would return for an evening without hesitation.

The Blue Anchor, Helston

Very disappointing. The bar had 3 revolting people with their foul dogs all over the place. Loud mobile phone shouting matches ensued. Brilliant. On a warm, sunny day the garden was totally covered with a marquee full of smokers ignoring the "no smoking" sign.
Beer was good. Only one pint, of course.

White Hart Inn, Penzance

This is not a pub. In August at least, it is a badly run place that wants to be a restaurant. You can wait for your warm pint (no cooling) for an age while a party decide how they would like their potatoes etc. The staff will ignore you whilst staring at their food order pad.
They even employ a young woman who tells you where you cannot stand or sit (even at the only unreserved table in the place), and is so dense that she doesn't understand how rude she is. (Until appropriate advice is given).
A disaster. Go to a proper pub.

The Star Inn, Crowlas

Over a 2 week period in Cornwall I could not find a pint I disliked. They are all good or better. But the Penzance Brewing Co is way ahead of them all. I could not pass this pub. The Best Bitter is as good as any ale anywhere.
The pub is a friendly drinkers' paradise and the landlord/brewer is a gentleman.

Old Chapel Inn, Bigbury on Sea

This is Devon - not Cornwall

The Nags Head, Walthamstow

This pub tries to be different and succeeds. Great beer and the gaffer is a friendly bloke who cares about his business. Some people (below) are impossible to please, but ay least there are numerous reviews and opinions.
Go with an open mind and enjoy the diverse cask ales.

The Bootlaces, Tottenham

It was closed 2 weeks ago on a match day. Whether permanent or not I don't know.

Gilpins Bell, Edmonton

The only place to get a proper beer within walking distance of THFC. Good choice of beers and very reasonable prices.

The Railway Tavern, Staplehurst

Good, friendly house. As good a pint of Courage Best that you can get anywhere.

The Bull, Sissinghurst

I agree with the last 3 reviews. It doesn't surprise me that they want to sell. They don't want to be there, except perhaps for the mistakes made when charging for drinks.
Average Harvey's Sussex. Very disappointing visit.

15 Jan 2009 17:03

The Good Intent, West Farleigh

Superb Harvey's Sussex was very welcome, as was the friendly atmosphere and jovial staff. It was New year's day and the boss was apparently away - not that I asume any relevance.
I will be back when in the area.

Railway Inn, Upper Killay

I go to this pub often. If Duncan had said "Hello" or just attempted to start a conversation, he would have left - eventually - with the same feelings as Rich66. I have seen "strangers" who have stumbled on the pub, enjoying a good laugh with the locals, leaving hours after they originally planned, and swearing to return soon.
Like many others in the Railway, I am English.
Maybe there is no hope for UKMikey though. Conversation is not normally associated with people who would rather study the light fittings. Keep driving Mikey!

L'Oasis, Stepney

I am pleased that you have reported on the food and the wine......This is a beer site and you were in a pub. Was the bloody beer any good or all squirted?

27 Aug 2008 17:41

The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe

This place looks like one of those hotels that have a refit to look smart but are incapable of serving decent ale or food.
How wrong I was. The beer was superb, the food likewise, and the prices were very reasonable compared to all my other Norfolk experiences. The staff were friendly and informative - and attractive.
I felt so guilty having got the first impression so wrong, I had to have a couple more before walking some off directly from the pub's back garden. Brilliant location and great views from the terrace.

The Crown Inn, Trunch

A good pub that would benefit from a little more enthusiasm from the staff. Good pint of Batemans.

4 Aug 2008 18:24

The Three Horseshoes, Warham

This is a superb old pub with a great pint of Wherry (last week). The food was not tempting even before looking at the price list. The bar lady (was it Karen?) could pretend that she likes being there.
A good pub for a session in the evening - probably better in winter - when Karen is more relaxed.

4 Aug 2008 18:21

Ship Inn, Brancaster

Transparently there are entries here made by the rude people or their associates. Looks obvious to me. I am just glad that I drove past the pub.

4 Aug 2008 18:08

The Ship Inn, Weybourne

A good pub with friendly locals and excellent beer. The Humpty Dumpty Ale (my first time) is now a top ten beer for me.
I feel they need to be strict with idiot parents on holiday with their revolting kids. For example, why allow a dog to walk over the dining tables while the kids are trying to use the seats as trampolines?
These people should be thrown out before they get 2 feet in the door.
It put me off trying their food too.
Often, allowing kids to treat a pub like a playground will lose, not gain, a lot of business.

4 Aug 2008 18:02

Lobster, Sheringham

I enjoyed the Deuchar's IPA on 2 occasions here.I didn't dare to try a different beer as I was confident any change would be a bad move. The beer garden / terrace is good on a sunny day - loads of room, and offers the comedy cabaret which is fairly constant. It consists of waiters shouting out numbers in all directions, doing three laps of the pub before serving 50 worth of cold food to a deaf punter.
A good enough reason for me to visit the chip shop for a hot meal.

4 Aug 2008 17:46

The Lifeboat, Thornham

The service here was appalling. Why does it take every member of staff to gaze at the card machine for 10 minutes when some revolting slob wants to pay for his wife and three unruly, foul, dirty children whilst decent people wait for a bloody pint? What's wrong with cash? Too quick?
If you ate hear after seeing what others got for their money, you deserve to be cleaned out.

The beer was of excellent quality. Complain loudly to have any hope of getting served before the hordes of stinking kids.

Roll on winter - I might try again. Only a drink though.

4 Aug 2008 17:39

The Hoste Arms, Burnham Market

It was so unappealing from outside that I turned and went to two great pubs down the road.

4 Aug 2008 16:49

The Chequers Inn, Binham

Friendly pub. Superb beers. Well worth a detour. Although the food is highly recommended, we had to pass on this. But not on our next visit.

4 Aug 2008 16:37

The Greyhound, Old Walls

The food here is superb. Obviously the bean tin is iffy but that has nothing to do with food. More importantly, the beer is always superb, with normally at least 4 real ales on.
The place is normally packed and the large car parks full at peak times. Not bad for the middle of Planet Zod. If, at off peak times there is no-one serving in the front bar, most people have the presence of mind to walk 8 yards to the back bar which always has a friendly bunch of regulars gathered.
I live 10 miles away and visit occasionally. If you're in the area, bring your walking boots and go to the Greyhound - but please also bring a few brain cells.
