The Railway, Calverley

Visit 13:00 Thursday lunch time and there is no one in the pub, but the bar man and the chef stood taking behind the bar.

Starting with the positives: the your bar man was very polite and obliging, The food, fish & Chips and a home made fish finger sandwich were very good. The light beer from a Skipton brewery was excellent, even though we had the first two pints out of the pump.

Negatives, there was either no extraction in the kitchen or it was not turned on, as the pub was full of a thin blue haze of cooking oil and the smell of cooking fat. The seating has seen better days, but the cost of replacing this may well be prohibitive, however, up to this point our visit had been enjoyable.

Then an over indulgent couple who had entered the pub a little earlier with a baby, taking photos of the baby and generally cooing about their little treasure, felt is acceptable to change the baby, in the pub, on the seating. Given the customers were clearly too ignorant to understand that not everyone is as enamored with their baby as they are and would really not wish to witness or smell this process when eating or drinking, the bar staff should have asked them to move to the toilets to change the baby.

The True Lovers Knot, Tarrant Keyneston

The pub changed hands in late July 2010 and the fat Yorkshire man has now left the building!

The pub is so much better now, clean and warm and now there is a proper chef the food is varied and tasty.

Beer was good and a warm welcome. it was nice to see people in the pub again.

Carniceria, Holmfirth

Mirrortown.

You are about 15 years too late. This bar was really happening in the mid 90's. When it opened it changed Holmfirth and the expectations of the locals.

At that time, the Nook was also exceptionally busy. You are just too late to the party, while you arrived fashionable late the party had moved on.

The real cause of the demise of both pubs was the death of the driving force and the subsequent family war over control and direction of the business.

Though in reality neither the of the bars were that good, just that locals held to the tradition.

The Cod and Lobster, Staithes

Though it is over six years since I was last in the pub, it is funny to read the service is no better.

I recall a fat bloke called Dave was the landlord, who was so idle that he would sit this side of the bar and queue with the rest of the customers for a drink: needless to say he went bankrupt!

The Cock And Bottle, Morden

The pub has just changed hands [early Feb 2010] all I can say is that the change has been seamless. I was a fan of the pub when it was run by Peter and his team. Under the new couple, the welcome is warm the beer in good form and the food excellent.

The Happy Chatter bar still appears full of chatter and dogs still welcome in parts of the pub.

While so say it is expensive, I still feel it represents value for money.

The Crown Hotel, Marnhull

Lovely pub, great staff, excellent food friendly efficient landlady, but the landlord [Phil] is a scruffy unprofessional who lets to whole pub down. Better having our pub open, but I do wish Hall & Woodhouse would take more care with who they appoint.

Fleur de Lys Hotel, Cranborne

Gastro Pub: really!

This notion is pass while still pretentious twaddle.

The food is fine but the pub is shabby but not shabby chic.

The staff are odd and if I were to be uncharitable, I would say the landlord is either on some medication pr drinking too much of his stock or ill.

This has the feel of some "last chance saloon for the old swinger, on his last throw, after a successful early life. Sad sad sad. It is like this was cheaper renting the pub than renting a house.

Get rid of the Gastro title, pay more attention to providing some good wholesome food, spend more time on proper customer service.

Silent Woman, Coldharbour

Not sure what it is about people with children that they get so upset when someone else does not appreciate their "little darlings" as much as they do.

They may be the centre of your universe but that does not mean they are at the centre of mine!

There are plenty of pubs where children can be taken, so why keep moaning about this pub, and instead, go somewhere else where you are welcome. I suspect, many of those complaining about their children not been allowed into the pub, are the very people that are happy to sit in the pub and don't care if their feral off-spring are upsetting other customer, just as long as they are OK.

It is perhaps due to the over indulged children, of ignorant parents, who allowed their treasures to be a nuisance that there is now a ban.

I think it is a credit to this licensee that he puts having a nice environments for adults, over making as much money as possible. If this costs a little more on the price of food and drink, I think it is a price worth paying.

The Sloop, Parkstone

The pub has now just changed management and we are hopeful that things will start to improve. Lets hope so!

The first thing to go should be the smell of the drains.

The Crown, Hawes

Real pub, real ale, real people, warm welcome, good food and dogs welcome: what more would you want?

The pub has been a haven of sanity from the commercial drive to modernise pubs at all costs. The 25 years or so that Judith has been in occupation is a real testament to her skill as a host.

Shame of it now that the owners of the pub are more intent on short term profit than loyalty: greed has a nasty taste.

The Crown Inn, Askrigg

Great beer, good food, a warm welcome and real fires. Dogs welcome no need to take off your boots from walking.

The pub even boasts its own parliament.

Jim [shortish powerful looking chap who you may actually see him behind the bar on certain times of the year] is one of the most obliging landlords I have come across. His passion for his beer is heartening as is his willingness to be helpful.

My favourite is the Theakstons Bitter and the cask John Smith, which is completely different from the smooth flow JS.

Just what the visitors to the up market time share around the back of the pub make of him is not clear, though they appear to revel in his blunt Yorkshire wit.

Charlton Inn, Charlton Marshall

Rooms adequate but in need of redecorating and refurbishing. Being small they would benefit by being decorated with light colours.

Service excellent both from staff and the woman who looked too young to be the landlady! There was real warmth to their welcome.

The food I had in the bar was very good but a little too fancy for the pub. It would not have been out of place in a restaurant: however I was in a pub and would have been happier with "real pub" food.

The extensive burger menu was what I should have had but only saw the offer on the black board after I had eaten!

However, the breakfast: this was just magnificent. The choice was wide and varied, with the breakfast I chose being presented and tasting better than I have been served in five star establishments.

Next time I visit I shall have some of other choices on offer particularly the fish. I was surprised to see locals do not use the pub for breakfast more as it is open to the public for breakfast.

The ale was good but I particularly liked the extra cold larger, which was a brand I had never heard of but tasted authentically German.

The Bay Horse, Tunstall

Having recently moved into the village this pub was a real bonus: real pub, no food, children tolerated while dogs welcome.

The price of the products means it is cheaper to drink in the pub than at home!

The Sam Smiths Stout being particularly good and in November 09 still only 1.85 per pint. I was paying over 3 for Guinness before I came.

There is an open fire in the lounge, a games room and a pool room with a large garden. Quoits are played in the summer months.

Shame of it is that the dog friendly Child tolerant landlord Kenny is off back to Scotland at the start of December.

Even open on a lunch time with a few locals supporting the pub.
