The Crowe Bar, Tottenham

The Crowe Bar has closed, and has now re-openned as pub & music venue, Balabam…

The Albion, Bethnal Green

Decent "proper" pub. They had four hand pumps on, including a red beer, Deuchars and Anarchy Brew Co's Grin & Bare it (tasty). We were only passing through but the locals seemed a good natured crowd. Probably gets busy when there's football on (bizarre spot for a West Brom pub, but it takes all sorts). And they were playing the Libertines – so Albion in more than one way!

The Proud Gallery, Camden

No reviews for 11 months, and then the last FIVE reviews were all made in the space of a day, are REALLY enthusiastic and made by new users who haven't reviewed anywhere else. You might almost be tempted to think something peculiar was going on...

The White Horse, Edwardstone

"The greenest pub in the world" probably. A good pub definitely. We went for Sunday roast (10), and it was generous and obviously made from good quality ingredients. There were four of their own-brewed beers on, and very good they were too. Special mention must go to their dark Mild, which was a real treat (not least at 2.30 a pint!). There was also a fifth real ale, along with four real ciders. There's a lounge which goes through to a new build, providing plenty of room. The separate bar provided a child-free area to eat in, and has bar billiards. The only fault: they had run out of bottles of their beer to take away!

The Golden Stool, Tottenham

Now being converted into a Tesco. Another pub lost.

Jolly Butchers, Stoke Newington

This pub has finally been rescued from its descent into hell! The interior is a bit gastro but reveals the original tiles. Tried the food and the burger is good (if a bit over elaborate) and the duck fat chips excellent. Sunday roasts are ok as far as they go, although late in the afternoon the meat was well cooked with a disappointing gravy.

But it's the beer that wins the plaudits here. A fast changing choice has included excellent pints from Brodies, Crouch Vale, Dark Star, Redemption, Thornbridge and more in the space of a week. All this plus a proper cider, a perry and 9 lager taps (Belgian, etc not a Fosters in sight).

Add in knowledgeable, friendly staff and this is a pub worth seeking out. Just be prepared to stay a while while you sample the breadth and quality of their beer!

The Rose and Thistle Inn, Alwinton

Community pub doing a nice pint of the local Farne Island. There is front small bar with pool table and darts (featuring an enthusiastic ladies' darts team one night we visited). There is also a larger back lounge. Sunday lunch is a classic, old fashioned affair and great value.

Twice Brewed, Hexham

Welcome hostelry for walkers. Four beers on hand pump when we visited (mid November) including the refreshing Twice Brewed Bitter, from Yates Brewery. Didn't try the food but sounded hearty and homemade just what you want after a day walking.

North Nineteen, Holloway

This pub is worth seeking out, as it has some of north London's best keep beers (an equal to the Bree Louise in quality if not quite in range). The Betty Stoggs from Cornish brewers Skinners was exceptional, putting what elsewhere would have been a great pick of the well kept Jennings Cumberland in the shade. Other beers included the more local Broodie's Sunshine.

There are three mid sized rooms which gives the place a nice homely feel, reinforced by the friendly bar staff and chef and the board games on the side. On Sundays at least children appear to allowed throughout rather than any space being reserved in peace and quite for adults although the kids seem to be permitted on the understanding this is a pub not a crche for them to run round in. There are hearty roasts with a proper gravy (which is apparently slowly reduced over 3 days). The beef is presented as a single thick slab of full-flavoured, rich meat and a veggie option is available. On our last visit, we also tried the sticky pudding with caramel sauce which was much lighter than the description and all the better for it.

The food aside, this is a drinking establishment at heart and, as if the beer wasn't enough, it has an excellent range of over 20 whiskeys to prove it. CAMRA members currently get a discount on pints, and there's a membership scheme if you want to become a regular.

All in all, a very good pub for whiling away a few hours. I just wish it was my local!

The William IV, Leyton

Finally got to go to this pub last Saturday for its Brodie's festival, which had a massive selection of their beers on and fascinating tours of their (micro) brewery out back. Good beer, the Red is a personal favourite, and 1.99 a pint is just great. Well worth going out of your way for.

The Coppermill Tavern, Walthamstow

We popped in here last weekend and they were kind enough to turn the sound on (quietly) for a League One football match on Sky, even though no one else was that bothered. It's definitely a locals pub; there was a good gathering, mostly of blokes, despite it being midday on a Saturday, and a hum of conversation. They all seemed friendly enough too, and we're definitely more indie-looking than "short back and sides"!

The beer was excellent. A really good pint of ESB and well kept, tasty London Pride. There was also Green King IPA and another on hand pump too, whose name escapes me but was in good nick as well. Not much in the way of food, but then that's because this place concentrates on being a pub with great beer. And a very good job it does of it too. I'll be popping over the marshes for another pint here soon.

The Masons Arms, Marylebone

NIce enough pint. Had a good pint of Hopping Hare; a second Badger beer was on too.

It's worth looking out for the table enclosed in it's own "compartment" for cosy or private conversation.

Although we didn't try it, the pub does food too. Standard "pub grub" from the look of it, and an upstairs dining area where children are welcome. On our visit, children were not allowed to stay in the downstairs bar, providing a valued "adults only" space.

The Anchor and Hope, Clapton

The beer at this pub is excellent. A really tasty pint of ESB, the London Pride was at its best (so often not elsewhere), and a guest of Discovery was refreshing on a hot sunny day, sitting by the river.

It's a proper old fashioned boozer. A good crowd of locals in and the landlord was laughing at a customer asking for a Pimms Cup ("this is a pub... if you want a cocktail, go down the West End"). Passing towpath cyclists add to the mix, but don't expect airs and graces, just well kept beer.

The Golden Stool, Tottenham

Currently closed, despite its prime spot on the A10 close to Seven Sisters tube. Hopefully someone will take up the challenge soon (and change the name back to The Mitre)

The Squirrel, Amersham

A nice pint of Brakspear Bitter or Pedigree on offer here. Quite a stripped back pub inside, with a line of tables perhaps for local walkers to stop for a sandwich or cheesy chips. When we visited was frequently only by a few locals, although we got chatting easily enough to the friendly barmaid. An open log fire down one end of the bar was welcome on a snowy day outside.

8 Feb 2009 16:51

The Red Lion, Little Missenden

The Green King IPA and 6X were reasonably well kept and most tasty! As noted by previous reviewers, the inside is atmospheric and on our visit yesterday warmed by a good open fire. The food was proper pub food. We had steak and mushroom pie the meat was plentiful and of excellent quality, and the veg was simple but satisfying. A neighbouring table had the shoulder of lamb which looked fantastic if enormous! The homemade bread and butter pudding rounded off a good, old fashioned pub meal brilliantly.

In short, warm atmosphere, good beer, great food what a pub should be.

8 Feb 2009 16:45

The Stapleton Tavern, Finsbury Park

The Larik is like the All Bar One of Stroud Green. Brightly lit, lots of wood, no atmosphere, nothing of interest to drink. I've had a couple of good nights there in a big group but it's in no way "cosy"!

25 Oct 2008 19:36

The Noble, Crouch Hill

It's true the food is on the pricey side, more upper end gastro-pub than a local. But it tends to be tasty enough, so you pay your money, take your choice...
The beer is well kept although it's often served a bit too cold, but there's a reasonable, if unchanging, choice. I prefer the Deuchars of the two real ales available.
As for the staff mentioned in the previous comment, they've always seemed more than friendly and cheerful. In fact, that's what characterises this pub: the quiet, informal friendliness of it as opposed to the Dairy down the road which is busy and large (or fancies itself as a bit posh if you eat there).

25 Oct 2008 19:33

The Oakdale Arms, Harringay

It's a bit off the beaten track, but the beer at this pub is more than worth going out of the way for. There's a wide range of Milton beers, and usually a guest or two as well. The pub itself is quite large so there's never a problem getting a seat. In fact, sometimes it can be a little too quiet and you wonder if the odd barrel suffers from being on too long. That said, whenever I've had a bad pint, the friendly bar staff have been happy to swap it. And I've had far more good pints than bad!

Go and try it, but be prepared for an extended visit to try a range of what's available.

15 Sep 2008 14:41

The Cock, Broom

Still unchanged from earlier reviews. This is a bit of a time-warp pub with several small rooms, including a skittles room. Beer is still served straight from the cellar, and the Green King IPA was excellent (and I'm not usually a fan). The Sunday lunch was generous and nice enough, although nothing special. The beer's the thing here.

15 Sep 2008 14:31

The Rose and Crown, Hawridge Common

When I saw the signage outside this pub, my heart sank as I thought "Oh no, not another country pub sterilised and turned into a supposedly 'gasto eating experience'". Luckily nothing could be further from the truth.

Ok, half of the pub has been turned into a dining area with a fake bare floor, but I was actually glad of that as it meant I could get a table at Sunday lunch. And what a lunch ... a good, generous portion of beef (if slightly overcooked) and roast potatoes along with warming veg, not least the cheesy one! Followed by the welcome sight of spotted dick and custard. Perfect for a winter's afternoon. I didn't get a chance to try it but the ham, egg and chips looked worth travelling for too.

But, never-mind the food, thankfully this is still a pub at heart and it has a fantastic range of drinks to prove it. There is a range of well kept and interesting local beers on hand pump and, unusually, an equally large selection of ciders and perry. My only regret was I couldn't sample more of them as I was driving!

7 Jan 2008 09:42

The Dutch House, Tottenham

This is a friendly enough local. It's not smart, it's not fancy but that's just fine. It's probably the most mixed pub in the area, although it can be a bit blokey. Never seen anyone get any hassle though. If you're sat on your own it's quite possible one of the regulars will start a random friendly conversation, but they'll leave you alone if you'd prefer. The Friday night kareoke is an institution, where else would you get irish folk music mixing with freestyle dub?

It can get pretty smokey though (at least until July I guess). As a side note, the Dutch House apparently went through a slightly dodgy Rangers period a few years ago but thankfully it seems to be long gone along with the associated union jacks and "Billy's corner". No more orange than the next pub now.

8 Feb 2007 13:23

The Masons Arms, Kensal Green

Catch this pub on a good day and it could be pretty nice. The insides are interesting looking and feel cosy enough, and all the staff (bar one) come across as very friendly and helpful. Glad to see the bar billiards table too!

But, and it's a big but, there is a smugness problem. The clientele are just so damned pleased with themselves. And that seems to go double for those who flounce upstairs to the members' area (what sort of pub has a members' area anyway!)

The food IS slightly on the expensive side for what you get, but on the whole seems good enough. Avoid the burger though - it tasted like a supersaver supermarket range, all water and soya. Not what you expect if you've paid eight pound something for it.
