The Prince of Wales, Twickenham
Decent pint in comfortable neighbourhood pub, the kind that is fast disappearing; either they are closed down or repostioning themselves as overpriced mediorce restaurants. Not a lot of folk the night I was in but have seen a few folk in there oftentimes passing.

St Margarets Tavern, St Margarets
20 years ago this pub was a consistent 8/10. My word, these PubCos have a lot to answer for. Give it 0.8/10 these days. Just goes to show that even a craphole can survive just off casual passing trade. For God's sake sort yourselves out and quick!

A bit of a creche during the day but good for a quiet well-poured ale later on of a midweek evening. Not stingy with the heating.

Spot on dandan76. for outing Frodos_Mum [single post, hidden profile.] F_M was obviously an odious little turd at school who never even mastered the possessive apostrophe and uses that assumed name when when molesting Canada Geese perhaps?
Anyway when last at the Barmy, I left my lad in charge of my pint while I went over to my motor for a muffler. Good thing I was sharpish because one of Mr Nasty's minions was trying to remove my half consumed pint. Upon my return, the fellow soon desisted but had the termity to call over Mr Nasty to remonstrate with me. The smelly oik tried the "not from round here then" patter on me. The utter cheek of it. Fellow needs a good ducking in the Tideway to teach him some manners, what?

Had a decent pint in here at 9pm one Sunday evening.
Quiet mind. Only two 40-something, middle-class punters.
The tables were set for the next day & the hoover was out.
A clean pub but nearly pitch dark away from the bar counter
Despite its size, it seemed poky. Recollect a silly amount of pillars & posts, maybe fake, to break the space.
On the Whitton side of the divided A316 with a bit of a motorway pub feel

The Crown and Sceptre, Kensington
A place like this is as rare as rockinghorse shit nowdays. A proper pub with excellent ale. Not a chav or tourist in sight.

Amazes me that the kind of pitiful loser that thinks Guinness tastes the same everywhere would even patronise this gaff.
"Feel pity for them not for they knew not what they have lost"
A jolly fine drop o' the black stuff, that's why Guinness drinkers come here and any other comments on anything other than the Guinness is pants.

Prince Of Wales, Covent Garden
Hmmm..hesitate to add it to my pubs as don't want to find it full of tourists and poncy gits next time I venture in.
A proper pub with decent well-kept ale at reasonable prices. Easily as good as any in the area, except people put it down for its decor? What are you? a 'Merican tourist? get a life pal!
To all its other detractors;
There is a trade off between price + service speed.
Pulling a decent pint ain't a one-second job.
Try the Savoy if you want speed or a 'spoons if you want cheap.
Pubs serve grog. Food's an incidental. Try Wimpy or Tesco.
If you want poncy decor, try the Tate Modern
lor' luv a duck mate, there's enough tossers destroying local cruisers as it is wiv out flash harrys banging abowt the bleeding decor & how slow the new Eastern European barmaid is.
fact is it takes time pint to pull a pint and we cannae no longer afford to pay the wages of the ex-colonials: ozzies, kiwis, saffas who could at least speak English albeit weirdly accented.....

a victorian tiled bog don't excuse mediorce beer & shite service.
If your idea of a pub is a quiet pint of decent ale then you best avoid this "architectural gem"
I am not knocking Samuel Smith, it's just that I have had much better....get some staff in that know how to keep & serve beer....
And for Chrissake, any decent manager knows when the busy times are, get some more staff in for them, you penny-pinching pillock or pitch in yourself, ya lazy git.....
any battle-crusier that attracts posts from septics and others who so obviously have the Baked Bean's as a second language is obviously more than a tad suss anyway but it wasn't always like that:
I have been drinking here off and on for decades; used to pop in for a bracer after signing on at the Labour in the pre-CAMRA, pre-TIME OUT days when there were a lot more tiled Victorian cruisers about and you competed for custom on how you kept your house and your beer; a lot more important then than it is today.
Always got a chuckle listening to the drunken pretensions of Thatcher-era yuppy wannabes...I'm still on this ground. How's Essex, sunshine?
All those tiresome Antipodean feminists that seemed to abound around the '87 crash must be morphed into designer grandmothers by now.
Never realised how truly awful Australian is until I had it screeched at me by some homesick flibbertygibbet one opening time in the late 90s. Beleive she went back PDQ to one of those forlorn outback places that end in a vowel: Bendigo, Dubbo, Cronulla .......
Anyway before I have to change my username to rambling_raving_remenisences_of_an_old_geezer, let me just say that this is a cruiser that is at its best mid-cycle; ie. between refurbs, new guv'ners etc.
Now that the re-opening dog & pony show is over and we're having such a luverly winter, almost back to local status in that pre-luncheon period....

The Sutton Arms, Little Hallingbury
great place for a quiet one out in the beer garden. be great in summer. comfortable bar stools. friendly service. good range at reasonable prices.didn't try the food but the dining area looked and smelt good. child & dog friendly.
20 Jan 2009 11:08
With soulless gastropubs and their stratospheric prices sprouting like mould everywhere , it is so refreshing to find an unprentenious traditional boozer in great location with decent ale at proper prices. Don't change a thing Fullers!!!! you've buggered up enough pubs with unsympathetic refurbishments, leave this one alone.
One of the highlights of being on the Green is the free show. Many "worthies" live in the area and such people detest chavs. Watch the hard men in suits moving in on any young chavs in cars who the try and park around the green. What they quietly say to them obviously works as they always seem to move on....
16 Jan 2009 00:12
Used to be a great little Victorian boozer. Gone downhill somewhat in recent years. For christsake (1) do a bit of cleaning & maintenance and (2) employ someone who knows how to keep & serve ale and the punters will come back.
15 Jan 2009 23:16
Before I emigrated after the '87 crash, I used pop in here for a a pint o' wallop to go with my half-pint of whelks from the market or after a go at the vegetarian buffet. The fish-monger & the buffet are still there but seemingly the other old identities in chapel st market have been replaced by linguistically challenged peddlars of cheap tat and I don't mean those who articulate thus: lor' luv a duck, I'm gobsmacked wiv wot they done this 'cruiser so I am guv..
I mean they don't speak the Baked Bean's.
In fact all you can say in this gaff's favour now is that it retains a premises licence and might one day revert back to a actual pub not a farce.
15 Jan 2009 23:00
The rabbit warren aspect gives it a lot of character. Nice wee beer garden to sup a well-kept pint of decent ale in. Can't comment on the food as yet untried. Wiil go back.
15 Jan 2009 22:34
Hmmm. The wee beer garden at the back's good. The inside is fairly bog standard. The Sunday night I visited, there seemed to be a distinct lack of tables, all removed for the rush that never came? In fact I was the only punter in there. Sole barmaid in no hurry to serve me as perhaps I wasn't in their target demographic being on the wrong side of 18. The lighting just served to high-light the fact that it is a standard pub not a New York disco & the music was both inappropriate & far too loud. Drinkable pint so they must get some trade in there sometimes...
15 Jan 2009 22:21
A right gem this one. Beaufiful pint of real ale. Atmospheric bar area. Good beer garden.
15 Jan 2009 21:58
Can't beleive that some plonker arsed up this inn so much that it had to close. Had a good pint in here in late winter 2006 Arrived here unbooked at 3am on a week-night after a delayed at Birmingham International in summer 2006 and the staff could not have been more helpful. Rooms were good & the breakfast was spot on. The food was great & the dining area clean as a whistle. Called in for another pint later in the year and saw nothing amiss. Anyone know the owners? I'd take in on at nil premium & a rent holiday in a New York minute.....

The Union Inn, Moretonhampstead
Grand little boozer. The local's local in this village. Well-kept ale and food good by all accounts too.
15 Jan 2009 14:30
think that trequites & Tee Jay's comments are never the mark than the other postings and don't find it surprising that it is on the market. This place has always been the poor relation in Moretonhampstead always just cruising along on auto-pilot. I'll not miss it.
15 Jan 2009 14:27
The White Hart Hotel, Moretonhampstead
We are summer school holiday afternoon regulars and really rate this pub. Great Bar & Beer Garden. Excellent Food. Friendly Management and staff. Well-kept beer too! Would try the rooms just on the strength of what else is on offer.
15 Jan 2009 14:22
White Horse Inn, Moretonhampstead
How about putting up a picture (you & the White Stag!!) so as punters don't get you two mixed up!
15 Jan 2009 14:18
The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo
front bar has lots of character, thespians as well as decor, both shabby chic? he said tongue in cheek.... Larger barns puts one in mind of a dank sort of antipodean shearing shed? Shocking toilets and miniscule smoking corner. Lunchtime food slow to arrive despite there being few punters on site but well-worth it when it did appear. Well-kept ales. An old Harris Tweed hacking jacket of a boozer that deserves to soldier on unmolested.
15 Jan 2009 13:59
even after the reno, it is still less antiseptic and faux than the establistments lower down the street. Hopefully an equilibrium has now been reached and we can forget the recent yobbo incarnation. The choice of ales is what makes it, keep 'em flowing in good condition please.
15 Jan 2009 13:15
OK rooms at a reasonable rate (if you can get them before the contractors do.) Good basic cooking. Other than the usual SS offerings, not much on the tap but you can always fall back on SS's bottled range. Great nook & cranny interior with leafy beer garden. I have stayed here several times with my family and the staff & management have always been great. Worth it just to wake up and see the cattle grazing in Petersham Meadow.
15 Jan 2009 12:59
Honest back-street boozer with well-kept beer (Youngs) and good solid plain food.
15 Jan 2009 12:44
was surprised that this was so rough as guts given its location.
supports a thuggish looking mob of chain-smoking chavs & yahoos who tend to prefer to fag in the public street directly in front of the main door rather than in the sad little beer garden at the rear. pretty average bar area and sad arse single table pool area.
didn't want to linger so I ordered Guiness which was 8/10.
I guess a battle cruiser this rough has to have some redeeming feature otherwise it would long gone.
15 Jan 2009 12:39
The Robert Inn (Master Robert Hotel), Hounslow
Not beyond redemption but needs a refurb to be able to compete with the indian cartel running the motor inn next to it........
15 Jan 2009 12:15
The Prince of Wales, Kensington
Not as hovelish as some posters have made out. the Ritz it ain't but reasonable decor for a London pub and the chalkborads and bottle-displays help alleviate the lack of windows. The scarlet pimpernel & I had 4 different pints between us and they were all good. Could do with more staff on in the evening but those that were on, were just busy not rude. 0/10 to whoever trains our security forces these days, the working-class tory, politically articulate Scots emigre was so obviously fake that even a septic tank wouldn't have been taken in.
15 Jan 2009 11:51
still some original or faux original features. OK beer. Not many punters the weeknight I supped there but the clientele that there were seemed pleasant enough. Got the impression that the staff like to shut up shop ASAP of an evening..........
15 Jan 2009 11:33
The Pride of Paddington, Paddington
The shame of Paddington more like. Mediorce beer. Overpriced food. Staffed on the cheap. Only for the tourists. Kind of place they get their pockets picked.
15 Jan 2009 11:02
Was initially put off by some Chav looking folk hanging around a DJ wannabe but no drama and volume kept down to a drinker-friendly level. Top marks for nicely kept Badger Ales. Good for people watching. Look for a brass on the corner if you're outside...
15 Jan 2009 10:58
Beer well-kept. Good Sized Screen. Keep out the dodgy punters and get in some decent grub.....
15 Jan 2009 10:51
The Dickens Tavern, Paddington
decent enough for the area around paddington station but that ain't saying much . Beer was OK. atomosphere OK during Weekday Premier League match. slightly better than the Sussex Arms further down on the other side pub food's better than the Greek Restauarant & the Steakhouse in London St, but better off at the kebab shop in spring street or the greek fish & chip shop in norfolk place.
15 Jan 2009 10:48
The Fettler and Firkin, Paddington
this was a far better boozer than the rubbish like "the pride" on the high st that is left in the area
15 Jan 2009 10:33
The Devil's Punchbowl Hotel, Hindhead
Not a bad joint. Clean good-sized rooms. OK food. not a vast selection of ale but adequate.
15 Jan 2009 09:54
So can someone tell me what happened to Bob, Alan & the Polish girls? Did they finally sell the lease? Been in that boozer plenty of times and don't remember "300 Badges" over the fireplace. Doubt that there even would be enough space given the headroom...........Who are/were Ian & Dawn?
15 Jan 2009 09:45
God knows that this pub could be great but... sadly they let theselves down on service and cleanliness.
Don't order off the draught unless you have a butchers at another punters and it was ok. Eat before or after. The last time I was in there, staff had not swept the garden area and there was broken glass out there. A no-no at the best of times but hopeless in summer and doubly so when there were children present.
5 Jul 2008 14:00
Standard. Not memorable at all....better selection further down the high road.
5 Jul 2008 13:38
Have been in the Wellington several times, always been OK. Decent pints of Pride and Hook Norton offerings. Reasoanble food too for the area and not too many tourists (maybe we were lucky)
5 Jul 2008 13:18
Had a decent pint of Spitfire in here. A tad crowded but it was Saturday night.
5 Jul 2008 13:07
popped in for lunch while waiting to check into the Thistle Inn around the corner. Can see where some of these complaints are coming from but didn't have any dramas myself. Hard to cock-up up a pint of Guinness and Cumberland sausage & mash....some Yank tourists but mercifully not too loud. Couple of annoying blokes gasbagging on their mobiles in the front section, either wide-boy car-dealers or security forces pretending to be...
5 Jul 2008 12:58
No gastro here only pork scrathings. Very plain old school decor. Top pint of Guinness.
5 Jul 2008 12:14
Jolly nice wee pub tucked in behind LSE. Bonus marks for the 6X.
5 Jul 2008 12:02
The George and Dragon, Brentford
Real locals (right by a council estate) pub. No real ale. 1960s decor. Al least no chavs, well this is where their parents go to get away from them...
5 Jul 2008 11:04
The Moon on the Square, Feltham
Typical town centre 'spoons; a bit daunting coz of Hagrid style dress favoured by many punters but cheap as chips
5 Jul 2008 10:51
Why would you go into a boozer run by folk as can not even be bothered to keep there sinage in good repair....
5 Jul 2008 10:44
ok in a renovated and under management kind of way. Reasonable selection of ale to be had. Good for a couple if you have to wait on Volkswagon.
5 Jul 2008 10:34
The William Web Ellis, Twickenham
might not be your typical 'spoons but the staff are....so would have to echo previous comments about them. However you can usually get at least one reasonable beer at a good price and a real tardis with comfortable sofas makes it the best pub in downtown Twickers for a private chat during the day if you've a mind.
5 Jul 2008 10:18
Christ, what a time-warp, straight out of Steptoe and son. At least the only chav was the barmaid. And I guess it is doing a sterling job of keeping its denizens out of other local watering holes....
5 Jul 2008 10:01
The Prince Blucher, Twickenham
Reasonable sort of battle cruiser. Friendly young bar staff. Fuller's Golden Pride is available.
5 Jul 2008 09:55
Beer's ok. Staff are friendly enough. Fortunately the odd Hooray Henry wannabe/Yank looking for "a real pub" are only sporadic visitors. Rooms are accepatble enough for directing out-of-town visitors to.
5 Jul 2008 09:50
Give this 3/10. Really only good for the tourists....Mediorce beer. surly bar-staff, rude manager, antiquated bogs
5 Jul 2008 09:41
Back to threeravensmoor's profile
The Two Chairmen, Trafalgar Square
was last in this in the mid 80s when it had the look & feel of a 50s battlecruiser
back 20 yrs later and am pleased to say that they ain't changed nuffink
OK food and a grand pint of wallop,
can't fault that in this neck o' the woods
another good thing: not a septic tank in earshot; brilliant
