Ship Inn, Shaftesbury

not sure what the problem would be with it being a 'drinkers' pub- I'd certainly prefer that to a 'trying-and-failing to be a resturant' pub. Only been there once, but lots of interesting nooks and crannies to sit in, decent beer and interesting range, probably your best bet if you find yourself stuck in Shaftesbury.

The Grove Arms Inn, Ludwell

well...they're trying. the new team are obviously an improvement, but I've got to echo the commentor who said that for as long as H&W have it in their clutches it's not going to be able to seriously compete with the local free trade.

The Talbot Inn, Berwick St John

one of the best in the area for food, and a lovely place, just wish the landlord would be a bit more adventurous with his beer choices!

The Compasses Inn, Salisbury

still a lot to commend it- excellent food and the gorgeous location can't change, but has taken a real slide downhill in terms of keeping beer and staff who know what they're doing. Badly needs to make more effort.

The South Western, Salisbury

the only real 'locals' pub in Tisbury, commonly acknowledged to keep the best beer in Wiltshire. I've never had a pint that was less than excellent there, long live Patsy! (and hope to god it doesn't try to change what works when she retires!!!)

The Hare and Hounds, Kings Heath

Agree with everything llucas1 has to say- when I lived in KH in 2008 this was the only pub I would even contemplate going to. Would love to have seen real ale in there though, although the Staropramen always went down well.

Goose on Two Streets, Kings Heath

unless you are a terminally alcoholic chav you'd probably best avoid this place like the plague...

, Digbeth

cracking pub with excellent beer selection in which I've spent many, many great nights. Marred by incredibly grumpy landlord though who refused to do anything about the (unusual) bad pint I had in there. Wouldn't even consider exchanging it, which was pretty shocking.

Shame because his barstaff are really friendly!

The Merry Maid, Balsall Heath

scary and rough, reflects the area, all I can say.

The Wellington, Birmingham

Basically the best real ale pub I've been in- cannot understand the negative comments. OF COURSE it doesn't sell Guinness or Larger, that's kind of the point...

The Wheatsheaf Hotel, Sandbach

certainly not the worst in Sandbach, but a bit soulless...

The Lion, Sandbach

rough, rough rough. only come here if seriously pissed for the nostalgia value of being in 6th form when the lion was only acceptable in virtue of being the only place we could get served.

The Cricketers Arms, Sandbach

still the best pub in Sandbach- only place to get proper beer kept well. Had some cracking VERY late nights in here when I still lived in Cheshire, wish I could get down more often.

Think the big tellys put off some potential punters though...

The Anchor Inn, Beer

Have to disagree with previous commentors about friendliness of staff- I spent a couple of hours in the anchor on Friday whilst waiting for my mates to arrive in Beer and found them all, especially Darren, really polite, welcoming and chatty. Decent pints of Otter (which, for those complaining about the lack of beer choice, they had to battle extremely hard with Greene King to be allowed, at the request of their regulars), and nowhere near as expensive as I expected.

Can't say anything about the food, but this is BEER in the evening, after all...
