The Nags Head, York

Triples for Singles is an absolute killer. This place is normally packed and used as a warm up bar for a nightclub.

The Lowther Hotel, York

Late licence, thankfully. Beers and spirits are cheap during happy hour, and you can actually hear each other talk. Full of students (this may or may not be a positive thing)

The Lendal Cellars, York

Good place, good selection of beers. Nice atmosphere. Let down by high prices.

The Judges Lodgings, York

Basement bar has good selection of beers, but quite expensive. Bar staff generally quite nice. Sometimes have music themed nights which are usually a laugh.

The Golden Fleece, York

Not great for selection of beers and slightly expensive, but the food is well worth the price.

The Evil Eye Lounge, York

Bar staff are slow, and hardly any beers that you've heard of. Maybe that's a good thing, but it can get irritating when you have to ask for a menu just to get a beer. And no pints - just bottles. Lots of spirits and wines, however. Drinks are a bit steep, but food is good and not too expensive. Distinct lack of space in this bar.

Dusk, York

Something of a 'wine bar' although the cocktails are 2 for 4 at certain times which is quite good. Otherwise a tad expensive.

Unfortunately this bar's reputation has gone downhill after an incident in the toilets whereby a young lady was trapped by a stuck lock. One member of staff suggested, ridiculously, that she climb out of the first floor window and crawl over the thin glass roof to the men's toilets nearby. It took at least half an hour until a member of staff finally allowed one of us to kick the door down.

The Artful Dodger, York

Good for cheap beers and chatting up drunk girls. Nice bar staff. Can get very busy/noisy on certain nights, other times quite quiet.

The Castle Inn, Colchester

Pretty good little pub, fairly good atmosphere, great beer garden that opens onto the street. Has a new bar in a continental sytle greenhouse-type-thing, which is nice in the summer. Drinks are average price and selection is okay. Food is pretty honest. Staff are quite nice (and they even put a cloverleaf in your Guinness!)

The Hub, Colchester

If you wanna get charged to go into a sweaty, expensive, noisy, overcrowded meat-market this is your place.

In the daytime it's a nice bar type place, decent food and decor for the iPod generation

The Wig & Pen, Colchester

worst poured pint ever
maze-like toilets especially when pissed
ive never seen so many denim mini skirts
cheekiest bouncers ever

but

you've got to go there at least once

The Playhouse, Colchester

Huge, cheap and crowded. Expect to see all sorts in here, and seeing as their keg reliability isn't great, expect to drink all sorts too. I once had to ask for four different ales because they had run out of the previous three. The beer is cheap but the service is slow - so order lots at a time. And don't expect to find anywhere to sit (or stand).

Food is really exceptionally cheap in the day.

The Bull, Colchester

If you like cheap beer and the potential for a fight, go here.

Goat and Boot, Colchester

A fair pub with really friendly staff, perhaps a tad too expensive (3 quid for a pint of the black). Not a great selection of ales, bitters or lagers, but primarily an atmosphere pub rather than a drinker's pub. Good, fairly inexpensive food in the day. Gets rather busier at around 9 or 10 on a friday, but the crowd is generally good and there's never any trouble. Has pool table, darts, big TV, a beer garden (of sorts) and a parrot.
