What a lovely place. Getting to try new beers what a wide variety.
Some are very different.
Never been in when no real ale on. Why at the beginning of the week put all the casks on. Keep something for the weekend.
Tim is very welcoming and the team know all about what they sell.
Sleepy you seem to like brown bitters and supermarkets. Why not carry on using these and leave the decent pubs all be it micro to the real drinkers.

The Surrey Oaks, Newdigate

This is all down to personal tastes. Lets hope Nick and Tracey use some of the comments as constructive. It is a community in it's own right, Most of the trade is steady regulars, (this keeps the pub open and people in jobs) not people just passing or popping in for the odd pint (although it also help), This is what a local should be a community.
Personal jibes are very unhelpful to other posters on here. ( Like the last 2 )True posties on here write about their experiance on the day they visit. So a bad experiance or a good experiance but about the pub, not others. Would like to see this from them not just back bitting or stating the obvious like pub now closed.
Yes the beers were not good over the weekend and the fire was a light. So Hopefully Nick will take this on board and try some other beers and take into account customers views.

Watermill Inn, Dorking

I ate here about 1pm yesterday. I had been told the manager had changed. Things are on the up. Food was very good. Just a couple of grumbles. The assistant manager looked really uptight and did not smile. One of the waitress was dressed very inappropriately. I will say bruises all over her neck, and low cut top. Yes she is young but this is not the place to be dressed like that. She made me feel uncomfortable. She seemed more interested in standing around chatting than looking after the customer that pay her wages. I will go again but if this waitress is working I will leave straight away.

The Cock Inn, Headley

I will be avioding until management changes. Staff allowed to serve themselves even if not working. It is like a free for all with the staff. Customers seem to be an annoyance. Each member of staff seems to do what they want when they want, the owner/manageress the same. Not run at all like a business that wants to survive.

Shoulder of Mutton, Shirland

We visited here in October, Just posted as this pub just added. The write up in the beer guide was good, so thought we would give it a go. Not sure how this got into the beer guide. The landlord was sitting on a stool, we stopped to look at the beers on offer. He snapped well give us a clue, The write up said no beer list as a large turn over of beers, All he had one were 3 not very good beers 2 from scotland. The customers were loud and crude. There was a lady (using this term as it was female.) shouting about what she fxxxing wanted for christmas. Fxxxing welly boots. The tea cups you can go to a junk shop good job none of us very tall. Not welcoming and will not visit again.

The Nettle Inn, Milltown

Only stopped as passing, lovely place. Food looks fantastic. voted one of the top 50 by the times. (38th I think) Next time in Ashover will give the food a go. Peak ales were the beers on tap, a well kept pint was consumed.

White Swan, Chesterfield

A brilliant find... Well desereved being chosen as one of 6 for pubs in the area for pub of the year in Chesterfield. We tried many of the beers. Moo was for me the best. Glad to see beer of the week, Raw are indeed doing something right. Lovely setting, fantastic beers. Kepp up the good work.

The Fox and Crown, Basford

Well.......
Rude staff, We ordered 2 halves, a diet coke and a coffee.
We were served our halves and coke but asked if we minded to wait a short while for the coffee, we said we did not mind. she went off and served others. THe staff have no concept of who to serve next. The beer we were served was horrible, Warm, Cloudy and just horrible taste. We had almost finsihed our drinks and still no sign of the coffee. When politly asked if it would be long as we were almost ready to leave the young lady snapped, I am on my own and serving. (Well not our problem. you took the order and money)
Not a very nice place, not very nice beer. Will not be returning.

Lovely pub, good food and friendly staff. Visited here a couple of times in the last few weeks. standards are consistant. Best to book at weekends for food.

The Old Poet's Corner, Ashover

Stayed here for the weekdend. Fantasic. Clean tidy and friendly. The beer range is billiant and the ciders and perry's the best seen for a long time. Try the Blueberry Cider made by the Ashover cider company. back again in Novemeber for the Bakewell christmas market. Shame 3 hours away.

The Old Poet's Corner, Ashover

Thank you for a lovely stay. We will be coming back very soon. Fantistic beer. Lovely staff and so welcoming. Kim and Jackie are some of the friendliest landlords around. What is up with chesterfield CAMRA, only allowed to win pub of the year for 2 years. These deserve it. Give the others something to work towards, running a fantastic place people want to visit.

The Tower, Redhill

Good I am glad you will not visit this place, wealdman. never any comments about the beer just gossip. Who, did NOT say they went in, just waited outside and NO trouble, you need to go back to school to learn to read. you seem to be a bitter old man or out of work lay about with nothing better to do. this is a forum for beer, not a sounding place for you. Grow a pair. you hide your status. By the way no news paper report mentioned this pub but the BBC did metion the Abbot. There are plenty of other pubs in Redhill find one and stick to it.
These tennet have only been in for two weeks. Do not tar them with the same brush.
Be glad not to see you

The Tower, Redhill

Please give it a go. Yes new landlord. Trying to keep the old drug users out, drunkerds and general louts. The fight was the old landlady not new. Will take some time to pull thing around. Like to know where sussexfox gets his info. Hearsay and rummurs,or does he have a crystal ball to see the licence will not be renewed. no wonder pubs can not make a go this day and age. Yes there was an incident in Redhill yesterday mandraker, not behind the pub but in the car park across the road why start rummurs. It was in the car park behind the Abbot to be more presice. Could have been either. rate the pub not gossip.

WELL DONE KEN AND TEAM. 400 DIFFERANT REAL ALES IN ONE YEAR.

16 Apr 2012 13:40

The Venture Inn, Reigate

staff do not know what the other one is doing. Rude to customers. Change's the rules every day to suit themselves. since when does an adult have a straw in a glass of coke. answer only when drinking in pubs that do not want customers. would not and will not be going back. Change the management.

12 Apr 2012 17:32

The Falkland Arms, Dorking

I do not think much of Youngs as a company anyway, and I know some of their policies are off the wall. Someone hired the Falklands for an 18th birthday party saturday night. Sence would tell you there will be under age at this party, nothing wrong with this. There was NO I.D. checks when they went to the bar(money more important than the law ?), shots were taken around on a tray for anyone to take. Or prehaps the law has changed in the last couple of days and you can serve under 18's. Lets hope thing tighten up. No rating as not used this pub and with policy's like this not likley to.

9 Jan 2012 09:11

The Red Cross Inn, Reigate

WELL,

I am a full grown adult, I ordered a diet coke no ice, (as driving) the sullen lady behind the bar, got the glass and put a straw into it and started to fill the glass. In shock I said to her I am not 6. I have never had this before. I work in pubs and would never insult someone by doing this. There was at least 3 tellys on with 2 different footballs games being shown. How can you hear anything???
It was a dull and dreary pub nothing going for it. Everyone in their own space, the only noise was the 2 tellys and a loud foul mouthed man standing at the bar. Beers not as advertised on board. How hard is it to update a blackboard.(very, when you stand at the top of the bar watching the telly)Been once will not return.
Did get: bye guys when left. I am a female and english, not american. Only did have 2 ales on.

The beer festival is underway and being very well attended. Great selection of Ales. Worth a trip.

The Fox and Hounds, Toys Hill

Agree with the last 3 bites, 3 out of 4 meals were edible, but overpriced, all very polite, the landlord over the top. when we ordered it was done ok. My 12 year old daughter ordered duck breast, the waiter came back to the table and said that would be served pink,( as duck should be). when it arrived it was placed in front of her and the waiter walked away. He can back to check and I pointed out that he made a point of telling us the duck breast would be pink but this was very over cooked and tough. He then turned round to me and said, I did notice that it was overcooked when I put it down he wondered off to the kitchen and that was that. DO NOT have the creme brulee, sloppy and tastless. As we were finishing a customer can in with 2 wet smelly dogs and prossed to hold a conversation by our table. WHAT A TURN OFF, when eating. To add insult to injury when they produce the bill not only is gratuitys at your discression on the bottom of the bill, BUT THEY PLACE A BIG GREEN SERICE NOT INCLUDED STAMP ON THE TOP. Again I vote with my feet, you have lost another 4 customers at least. Once bitten twice shy.

The Jolly Farmers, Betchworth

Worth giving a go, even just for a pint when passing. Sunday had Dark Star original and Pilgrim Surrey.
They now keep the beer well and support local brewiers. Just need to sign them up to Locale.
Give it a go

23 May 2011 14:13

The Fox Revived, Horley

Everybody has a bad experiance now and again, The Jolly Farmers is the sister pub to this but do not slag one off and taint the other without even trying it.
Give them both a go and make up your own mind.

23 May 2011 14:09

The Market Hotel, Reigate

My god, are these pubs really allowed to keep going.
DO NOT LEAN ON THE BAR YOU WILL EITHER DROWN OR STICK.
THE SAME ROUND OF DRINKS DO NOT COST THE SAME, A POUND OR TWO DIFFERENT EVERY ROUND ?
STAFF TALKING NOT SERVING OR CLEARING GLASSES.( YOU MIGHT GET PAID TILL YOU FINISH, BUT CLEARING TABLES AND SERVING THE CUSTOMERS I THINK NEED TO BE DONE.)
THE BEER WAS ON THE TURN, THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR A REAL DRINK.
GOOD PUB FOR THE KIDS THAT JUST GO OUT TO GET DRUNK.
WILL SERVE ANYONE. APART FROM GOOD HONEST WORKER. READ THE LIST OF DRESS CODE AS YOU GO IN, (PROSTITUTES WELCOME)
WILL NOT BE RETURNING.

20 May 2011 09:08

The Smugglers Den Inn, Newquay

Stopped here on Thursday for a quick bite to eat. There was a pie and ale festival on. 80 beers. Went to try some but only 2 sets of tasting notes. the tent was busy and could not read the notes as other people wanted to have a look. The pies were tasty and varied. Beer was ok.

3 May 2011 13:01

Bucket Of Blood, Phillack

We stopped here on Easter Sunday for a drink after being on the beach for the morning. St Austell, black prince beer. Very good pint. The staff were very friendly and talkative.

The Watering Hole, Perranporth

What a location, what a novelty. Went here Tuesday for a snack and drink.
Skinners at its best, we made one mistake. for snacks ordered the meze and tortilla, did not realise they were to share. did not need to eat for the rest of the day. Very well worth the visit.

3 May 2011 12:56

Bolingey Inn, Perranporth

We visited this pub on Wedensday lunch. They are a tiny pub tucked up a side road. Well worth finding. We had Broken piston from a small local brewery, it has only been brewing for 5 months. Well done for a really good brew. The food was good as was the service. Will return next time in Cornwall.

3 May 2011 12:52

The Bird In Hand, Hayle

We arrived at the pub and it was quiet, service was quick. We had both their own brews that was on. They are a very drinkable standard pint. Nice to see the brewery up and running again.

3 May 2011 12:47

Watermill Inn, Lelant

As promised, We ate here on Good Friday. Good job we booked before, we arrived early for our 7.30pm table. and already pepole were being told they were fully booked. 3 May 2011 12:43

Blubeckers at Gomshall Mill, Gomshall

Nice to see differant real ales than other outlets sell. Do something for the non drinkers please. 2.65 for a J2O. Food looked good, we were killing time so called in for a pint. Someone normally has to drive why charge so much when other pubs keep these prices down. Not busy, Dirty tables (food on then), 3 staff. 6 customers. No excuse as early evening. Will not make a special trip out that way, but will use if passing.

4 Apr 2011 09:10

The Compasses Inn, Gomshall

Went here Saturday night, warm hammer mild. Now only a surrey hills outlet. Nothing wrong with a well kept Surrey Hills, this was not a well kept pint. This is a very charming pub, but very dark. The barman just about served us when not on the phone. Would not have gone apart from needing a stamp for the Surrey Hills Ale Trail. Which the barman signed and then said lets see you forge this?????????????? Why.

4 Apr 2011 09:02

The Surrey Oaks, Newdigate

Ken must be doing something right. Sunday lunch is very busy. Try the surrey Oaks but BOOK. Only serves till 2.30 on a Sunday. The food is good any time, all cooked on site. The beer talks for itself. 2 regular real ales and 3 changing guest beers.

The Dolphin, Betchworth

We had heard of the beer and cheese tasting and duley turned up. It is a shame that Youngs and / or the Landlady had not confirmed this with Mellisa. Can not comment on the pub or beer as got to the door saw it was not on and went home.

22 Feb 2011 16:55

Three Horseshoes Inn, Sidlow Bridge

Went here on saturday Night, (19th Feb )lovely pub. The Guest beers were not at their best been on all week. Will visit again soon and try again.

The Sanctuary House, Westminster

went here on a pub crawl, VERY NOISEY. The lucky ones tried the london porter, but not all our group were that lucky. Bengal Lancer left a lot to be desiered.

The Buckingham Arms, Westminster

Visited here on a pub crawl, not bad beer but was itching to clean the mirrors.
Staff friendly and reasonalby priced beer.

29 Nov 2010 16:48

Watermill Inn, Lelant

Ate here in May 2009, going back to Hayle Easter 2011, will give this a go. Last time food lovely, landlord pleasant. Hopefully not changed hands again or as last report a complete basket case. Always worth giving somewhere a go and making own mind up.

11 Nov 2010 12:40

The Mint, Banstead

HHGTTG. The pubs mentioned have not been taken over, still run by Mitchells and Butlers, (but will not tell you this) These pubs have been cherry picked by a consortium of threemen backed by m and b to take these pubs up market. the Wotton Hatch Westcott and the Arkell Manor Betchworth. Definatley a no go area for common pepole. AKA joe Bloggs with working background. Anyway the Mint. Very up and down. Need some stability in staff which is hard in this job.
Just keep sending back substandard food and they will get the message.

11 Nov 2010 12:31

The Dolphin, Betchworth

I agree with sallyclarkson, what is happening here.
Went for a drink here Saturday night (6th Nov) Brockham Bonfire night. Got a table about 4pm, had something to eat. They stopped food. About 6pm was asked to vacate the table as reserved. Yes we were only drinking by then but food had stopped, the people who booked the table were only drinking aswell. Who books a table for drinking. Only Landladies and landlords that do not want returning customers. My money is as good as the next persons. Will not be returning. Youngs need to find managers to look after this traditinal pub not run it into the ground. Bring back Mel and Chris or Rose and George.

11 Nov 2010 12:22

The Prince Of Wales, Westcott

This is a bit expensive for food and drink. Please listen to your customers for what their needs are. Tall guy behind the bar a bit stand offish

WHO IS DESERVEBETTER, SOMEONE WHO HAS NO BALLS TO SAY THIS TO THE LANDLORDS FACE. WHICH PLANET DID THEY VISIT, PLEASE VISIT AND MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND, GABBY IS A FANTSTIC CHEF. PIES ARE COOKED ON SITE, THE FOOD IS FRESH. KEN IS WECOMING, HOW CAN A PUB THIS DAY AND AGE LAST THIS LONG IF THEY ARE NOT UP TO SCRATCH. WE HAVE TRIED OTHER PUBS IN AREA AND ONLY TWO OTHERS COME ANYWHERE CLOSE.( IS THIS A LANDLORD FROM A DEAD PUB TRYING TO UP HIS TRADE. ) I BET THE LOCALS KNOW WHICH ONE IS THE MORON. BY THE WAY FANTASTIC BEER FESTIVAL THERE END OF MAY AND AUGUST EVERY YEAR. THIS IS A BUSY FRIENDLY PUB. TRY THIS PUB AND MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND.
