The Walnut Tree, Maidstone

I go for the comedy nights which are always good but it is a bit on the expensive side. Probably wouldn't go in just for a drink but if there's something on it's well worth a visit.

The Steam Passage, Islington

The beer was ok but I could only manage one as I was concerned I may go deaf. First table I sat at was so sticky and dirty I had to go and wash my hands. Apart from that not much else to set it apart from every other pub.

The Jenny Lind, Hastings

Spent a pleasant Saturday evening in here. The staff were friendly if slightly ditzy but I'd go again. Not sure of the decor, board games and a road atlas in the book shelf. The answer is to not analyse and just enjoy being in a pub in Hastings where you stand a good chance of getting out alive.

The Grapes Inn, Filey

Quite a nice pub and cracking prices certainly seemed better than a couple of others we went to. Would certainly go back if I ever find myself in the town again.

The Three Tuns, Filey

Quite nice and reasonable food, beer was well kept and prices were great from a Southerners point of view but let down by poor service. Rather nice barmaids. Not bad but there are better in the town.

The Harrow, Hastings

New management are in again, they seem an improvement so maybe worth a second chance. The food's improved.

The Stag, Hastings

Quite nice inside, friendly staff and good ale. Open fire which was nice as it had got a bit parky but I did end up sweating like a diseased hog after about an hour but a shift of tables solved that. I'll go back again when I'm in the old town.

Cassidys, Tunbridge Wells

Doesn't look much from the outside but is rather nicely laid out inside. Guinness is good but they don't take credit cards which is a bit of a pain, friendly staff, not sure what makes it Irish but I suppose every pub needs a USP these days and it's certainly unique in The Wells.

The Queens Head, Brighton

Sad to say this has gone downhill since the landlady left. A couple of the old staff were still there when I last went in but it has definately lost its spark. They've ruined it by taking out the lovely long bar and sticking a round one right in the middle by the door, makes it feel a bit cramped and gloomy. I'm very surprised by the post about the food as they did some of the best you'd find in Brighton. I beleive it was run as a seperate franchise so I suppose it's changed hands! A real shame to see one of my favourite pubs go downhill so quickly.

The Masons Arms, Kensal Green

I was rather impressed by my visit on Sunday. Very nice Harveys and not too expensive by London standards. The food was excellent, we were a big group but everyone got served at the same time which can be a problem in pubs and it was even reasonably priced. If I get the chance I'll certainly be back.

The Harrow, Hastings

Just had a massive refurb but it's still a toilet. I've only been in once which says it all as I only live a minutes walk away. One of the neighbours said the food was ok but I haven't tried it.

The Cutter, Hastings

Not as bad as some in Hastings. The Harveys was good and the staff were friendly but I probably wouldn't go there again.

Brewers Arms, Herstmonceux

A really nice pub. Nice atmosphere, friendly locals and staff. I was working so couldn't try the beer but the lemonade was reasonably priced.

The Rocket, Euston

I went in here a few times while working in the Library and wasn't overly impressed. There seemed to be a problem between the two barmaids, had to listen to the bigger one make remarks all afternoon about the others incompetence and then she sat down at the table in front of me (blocking my view of the cricket) and started crying! I'm fairly sure women are supposed to go to the ladies if they want to cry, that's why they're provided.
Not sure about Johnnycabs suggestion that the chef changed daily, I saw him behind the bar & I don't think he had changed anything (or washed) for quite a while.
I found a much nicer pub round the corner for the last day but I can't remember what it was called or where it was.

The Craig Dhu, Paisley

It looked a bit rough from the outside but was quite nice inside. The staff were friendly and the locals weren't too bad either. Met the most drunken woman on earth, it was only fumes stopping her from falling over, she was very friendly as well! Cheap beer & a nice atmosphere would certainly go back if I ever find myself in Paisley again.

The Office, Brighton

Wouldn't bother making a special trip for the beer but it does do great food. I don't often eat in pubs as it gets in the way of drinking but I make an exception here.

Grand Central, Brighton

I pop in occasionally and it isn't bad and handy for the station. Some people rave about it but I can't see why! Nothing wrong with it but just seems a bog standard pub to me.

The Westminster Arms, Westminster

I popped in for a quick pint before staggering to the station and was quite surprised. Good service, nice beer, good selection and cheaper than my regular in Brighton. Completely empty downstairs when I went in so it was nice and quiet. Not sure what it would be like when it's packed as it is a bit small downstairs but nice when empty.

The Reef Bar, Waterloo

I go here quite a bit when I'm meeting people and I think it's ok for what it is but you're not going to base an evening out on it. It's quite good when the rugby is on at Twickenham as all the fans tend to congregate here. The service isn't bad, efficient(ish) rather than friendly and the food and beer are ok. Can't really expect much more than that from a beer shop.

8 Mar 2007 23:34

The Wellington, Strand

I didn't eat here but I thought the beer was good although it was slightly gloomy downstairs. The Australian barmaid was a bit surly but apart from that I will probably pop in again when I'm in the area.

The Queens Head, Brighton

This is my favourite lunchtime pub, quiet enough to sit and have a chat but with a good atmosphere and nice food. Also has one of the best looking landladys in town but Guinness is now 3.10 a pint which is expensive even by Brighton standards. May have to forgo the love sick ogling for a cheaper liquid lunch!
