The Royal Oak, Borough

Grabbed a rare weekday lunchtime session at this wonderful pub. Went with a good friend of mine and enjoyed the great atmosphere (almost festive with the Christmas decs still up), excellent food and lashings of Harvey's mild. They still had the Christmas Ale on draught and we had a couple of half pints which were on the house because Frank thought the brew might be past its best. However, tasted lovely to us! Thanks, Frank, you run a great pub. Very civilised and gets all the important things spot on. One hesitates to use the phrase 'real gem' because it's so overused but this is the genuine article.

The Prince of Wales, Kennington

Perfectly decent Sheps pub. Have been there on occasion and it's good. But what is this doing in the number one slot? Don't think it trumps the CASK or the Harp!

The Free Press, Cambridge

Excellent pub that manages to be stylish as well as charmingly old fashioned. Liked the mulled cider over Christmas and I can't help but be drawn back again and again to a Greene King pub that serves the brewery's luscious XX Mild. If only more of their pubs would do the same. If the Press put Strong Suffolk on too I might never leave. Happy New Year guys.

Elm Tree, Cambridge

Congratulations on another excellent welcome and beer range during an all too brief visit between Christmas and New Year. Very friendly barmaid who looked after us and steered us in the direction of some real hits. Shefford Dark Mild was like uncovering a creek of pure gold. Lovely stuff and will be back soon to sample the forest of handpumps. You run a great pub with cracking service....

The Champion of the Thames, Cambridge

Such is the skill of this pub that it's the only place I know which can make Greene King IPA taste not just palatable but actually rather pleasant. How on earth do they do it? What an agreeable pint when in good hands. Congratulations on the beer husbandry and for preserving this as the last unspoilt pub in the heart of Cambridge city centre. A real fire keeping out the Baltic temperatures of mid winter was another bonus. And the Jekyll's Gold guest was excellent. Alas, had to depart all too soon for the delights of the Radegund and the Elm Tree's fabulous Shefford Dark Mild. Will be back as soon as I can....

The Harp, Covent Garden

May nothing about this wonderful pub ever change (apart from its constantly updated range of guest ales of course). Great to have a pub like this in the centre of London that hasn't succumbed to offering food, fruit machines and homogenised beers in bland surroundings. Terrific place - don't hesitate to visit if yr in the area.

Spaniards Inn, Hampstead Heath

Was at this rambling gem of a pub in the week and thought it was spectacular. Bags of atmosphere and superb range of beers. My Danish girlfriend said the Yule Fuel guest ale from the Spectrum microbrewery was the best beer she'd ever tasted in the UK and I began to make some headway into the excellent range of German and Belgian beers they have in bottles in the fridge. Wonderful to see Rauchbier on offer. Don't believe all the reviews you read about the service being crap. The bar staff were very friendly to us and the food above average. Beats off stiff competition to be the best pub in Hampstead in my view.

The Royal Oak, Borough

Blimey, Piggles. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but you're a tough customer to please. Every time I've drunk in here I've lamented the fact that the majority of pubs aren't a patch on this one. The landlord really knows his ale and I've never known the beers to be in anything less than tip top condition. "The pale ale and porter were standard for their genres"? - mate, if everyone brewed like this, I'd be a happy man. Are you sure you went to the same Royal Oak all the rest of us are talking about? This is one of the VERY VERY best pubs in London.

The Harp, Covent Garden

The best pub in Covent Garden. Has character, extremely friendly staff (a very rare thing in London) and unusual cask ales for London (Elgoods, Lancaster bomber, Archers - need I say more?)

The Three Horseshoes, Abbots Ripton

This is an excellent pub. Had a brilliant Christmas eve in here necking delicious Oakham ales and even winning a bottle of whisky in the raffle. Long may it survive and prosper. Keep up the cracking selection of local cask ales, guys.

The St Radegund, Cambridge

Not sure about this place being "cliquey" - Terry the landlord has always gone out of his way to be friendly (even if that does mean him foisting copies of his cricket magazine on you at the end of the evening). There might be a few odd rules but if you want something soulless head for the beer barns in the centre of town. You won't catch them doing Veil Ale. If you only visit one pub in Cambridge, make sure it's the Rad.
