The Royal Oak, Loughton

Probably a nice pub once but when you walk through the glass doors you know what's coming. No real ale. Every shred of character expunged. Now a train wreck of a pub. Avoid!!!

The Prince Frederick, Bromley

Visited this evening. Nice pint of Ruddles friendly atmosphere definitely recommend.

The Norfolk Arms, Russell Square

Beware. On my first visit last Friday, the hideous barmaid gave me change of a tenner when I had given her twenty pounds. When my friend suggested she might apologise, he was informed that I was lucky she had refunded me. Will be back for their hell freezing over celebrations.

The Barley Mow, Hersham

Impressive array of unused handpumps

The Lord Brooke, Walthamstow

As at 23 March 2010 this one has closed again. Very recently by the looks of it. The affable African gentleman guarding the place indicated that it may be for good this time.

Vauxhall Griffin, Vauxhall

Very much open last night. But as it was pub 7 of the crawl I've no recollection whether it was any good or not.

The Royal George, Greenwich

As predicted, now closed and boarded up.

The Conquering Hero, Upper Norwood

Dropped in on during a crawl and moved to write a review. Well kept pint of Best, so stayed for a second one. And cheers for the free pancakes (happened to be shrove Tuesday) they were great too. Also nice enough interior and seemed quite a mellow atmosphere.

The Cask, Pimlico

Not nearly as bad as some of the earlier reviews make out. Maybe I was lucky. The pub cat seemed fairly relaxed too.

The British Oak, Kidbrooke

Went back to my local for the first time since Sept 07 review below. Much improved. The place has obviously been tarted up and they even do some food now. Folk night was quite popular. Relaxed atmosphere. Ale fine, staff polite. This pub comes into its own in the summer anyway but good to see it busy.

And if the description in my earlier review appeals to you, suggest you go round the corner to the Sun in the Sands.

The Royal Standard, Blackheath

Another refurb and more of an emphasis on food. Time will tell... Like its neighbour the Oak, an underperforming pub given its location and the quality of the building.

The British Oak, Kidbrooke

My local. Walked in the other day and pub had turned into the bad remake of a Guy Ritchie gangster movie. Regulars, along with and the friendly and informal atmosphere mentioned below, had largely disappeared. Hopefully a blip. Anything to do with the Standard being tarted up? - noticed at least one refugee from there. Worrying.

The Royal Oak, Earlsdon

This pub seems to get a regular shoeing from other contributors but on my visit on a pub crawl round Coventry on 24/2 I thought the beer was good and the landlord is a friendly bloke. Worth a visit.

The Crosse Keys, Bank

This used to be a flagship Wetherspoon's for unusual real ales from microbreweries. Last week the pumpclips lined up as 'Pedigree, London Pride, Courage Best, Courage Best, London Pride.' There were 2 guest ales and they were well kept. But the final nail was the service - it was bad enough the overall 'no rush' approach but then one of the barmen was about to dispense my order into someone else's dirty glasses. I guess the washing up was a bit of a chore. That's outrageous in my book and I doubt I'll venture back here in the near future.

Royal Oak Inn, Staffhurst Wood

What a fantastic pub this is. Excellent ale and food. Well worth seeking out.

14 Dec 2006 15:53

The Railway Tavern, Forest Gate

Closed and boarded up. Fox and Hounds next door is a nice enough pub.

12 Dec 2006 10:52

The Railway Tavern, Nunhead

Demolished and now flats. Pub sign still there on a post.

6 Sep 2006 09:48

The Maypole, Brockley

Still very boarded up.

6 Sep 2006 09:46

The Snooty Fox, Canonbury

Nice pub. Slightly alarmed that there appeared to be a corpse an one of the tables last night.

23 Aug 2006 16:03

The Valley, Charlton

Planning application in to Greenwich council to demolish for flats. Not a very nice pub but still looks like another sad statistic in the serial destruction of pubs by propery developers.

22 Aug 2006 13:06

Victoria, Greenwich

Now gone. A hole in the ground ready to be built on.

10 Jul 2006 12:46

The Railway, Edgware

Closed.

19 May 2006 13:21

The Bridge, Topsham

Absolutely top drawer pub. A must if you are in the area.

3 Apr 2006 13:30

The Volunteer, Baker Street

Good luck, Gareth.

30 Mar 2006 15:27

The Sebright Arms, Barnet

Not many people in even on a Friday night but a fantastic pint of McMullen's.

18 Feb 2006 11:16

The Earl Haig, Bexleyheath

Pleasantly surprised by this one. 30s road house given the standard Ember Inns treatment but works really well. Pleasant atmosphere on a Thursday night. Real ale well kept.
