The Weir Hotel, Walton on Thames

I am a tradionalist. I like a few ciggies with my beer. No smoking sections are a great idea, and especially around food, but for the aforementioned reasons I no longer go their. I guess this is the shape of things to come.

The Anglers, Walton on Thames

Lovely location, especially on a warm summer evening. It is terribly expensive though, so those not on a 6 figure salary are not going to be able to afford to get inebriated. My advice would be go there on your birthday when everyone else is getting the drinks in! Food average, service slow, but that is all common place these days.

The Hand and Spear, Weybridge

It has always been a student pub, it IS right next to Brooklands College after all! In the 90's they had some great bands play there Lush / Super Furry Animals / Catatonia etc. That was before the re-fit and change of owners. Being totally bored in the disaster that is "that" bar next to the station I popped in one evening for a drink. Wow, a rocking band on stage and a great atmosphere. If you are a 30 something who can't remember what it was like to be 18 then avoid. I however still love to see a live band and don't feel intimidated at all by sharing drinking space with "the kids".

The Badgers Rest, Walton on Thames

Nice inside, but they are total scrooges with the food portions. I ordered the lasagne with chips and at nearly 7 quid I sent it back for more chips. Seriously there were no more than 10 on the plate! In fairness they brought me an entire bowl for free and the chef came out of the kitchen to see "Who had been so cheeky", which was amusing. It's not a bad pub, very cute barmaids and the beer is good. A good place to take someone on a date.

The Swan, Walton on Thames

Atmosphere improved dramatically since the friendly Aussies took the pub over. My friends and I used to be put off by that rude landlord they had a while back. If you like your beer then the Youngs quality is here. Current staff are really cool and accomodating. It seems to be dead many nights of the week though, but always a very busy beer garden in the summer. The minus points are zero vegetatian food options and expensive, but a nice location and a choice of 4 different areas of the pub to sit in. I rate this pub a 6.

Morts Wine Bar, Walton on Thames

West End prices in Walton-on-Thames I am not a fan of. They do put on some good live music now and again though. This place is very small, if you want a classic "intimate" wine bar then maybe give it a shot.

The Regent, Walton on Thames

I agree with "Claremont" and "Rob" this pub is a classic JDW. You get very good value for money generally. The tables / ashtrays are never tidied, but I guess at 1.50 a pint they are making a compromise. The food is also excellent value for money, one of the only pubs I know in the area that has such a wide choice of vegetarian options. I have enjoyed dinner their many times with my girlfriend. Avoid the Curry club though, mine was horrible. Due to the inexpensive costs and location it is bound to attract a slightly rougher element, but I have only ever seen trouble in the pub once in over 10 years. If you are up for a lively night out then this is not a bad place to look.

Ashley Park Hotel, Walton on Thames

The best place I know for an impromptu A-ha karaoke session. Great staff, I am not going to comment on the food as I am a vampire, and subsequently have not the need for such things.

A few points to note though :-

1. Ember Inns appear to think that the general public are all suffering from vitamin deficiency. I have not noticed an outbreak of skirvy in the area since the old king died, so there is no real need to insist on putting lime in EVERYTHING. Lime with whiskey? any takers?

2. What happened to the hairy bloke with the cough?

3. Can they do away with the "wipeout" round in the quiz as I am a bit Joey at it.

4. Why do I always end up with tab 10?

5. The 2nd space on the first row on the left in the car park is reserved for my Mondeo. Can people please refrain from parking there. Thanks.

PS - "Well young Rob, when I owned the Jazz shop in Walton, Errrrrk!, errrr" etc.
