The Oak On The Green, Bearsted

sadly a grt place that will always be busy,so there may be an aire of complacency on their part.one of the chefs that worked there is now at the hook and hatchet at hucking and the food there is very good now.i would drive past now and go to the hook or the black horse at thurnham.shame!!

Silent Woman, Coldharbour

will go with most reviews here.the landlord and lady are very friendly.we got a txt to say our son had an accident while having dinner and then completely lost signal.the landlady heard we couldnt make contact and presented at the table with the house phone.a lovely gesture.the end bar is the only place you can just have a drink.the rest of the pub with tables set for diners.the same menu through out the pub.usual suspects as far as pub grub goes and chef specials which were lovely.the pub is very busy all of the time and the car park was full everytime we past which was what drew us in.theres 3 caravan sites close by which may account for that.badger beers really nicely kept and a really nice rose from the short but adequate wine list.well worth a visit if your on hols in the wareham area.

The Three Tuns, Bransgore

better than a 5.3...went there during a stay at a local caravan site.food was really good although you could argue pickled veg is over used although nice.the scallops i had were the biggest ive had for sometime, soft shell crap was a winner although not sure if the batter was tempura, too heavy.the ale was good and regulars and hosts friendly.

The Crown Inn, Christchurch

totally agree with champagnestyle.this is a mitchel and butler.if you accept it for that you will be ok.foods not bad ad very small kids are welcome with high chairs.the sunday lunches we were served were really good to be fair, ringwood on top helps this place out.not bad all in all

The Black Horse, Battle

plce is full of clutter and on the soapy side.the barman was very friendly and served up a lovely pint of harveys.had abit of lunch being a sausage sarnie which was served with a nice salad and we went for onion rings and chips.the food was truely good and the woman cooking cares.sadly its difficult to ignore discarded clothes lying around.battle it would seem is short of nice pubs.good beer and food in a tip!!!

The Hare and Hounds, Sway

been again mid week.had a sandwich which gave grt value for money.a doorstep full of local sausage.the chips which come with it are really good, crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle.a really well dressed side salad came with it.the prawn sandwich was just as generous.the first pub ive seen that cooks with quorn products to accom the tree huggers amongst us.creeps up in rating

The Angel Inn, Lymington

its a grt shame isnt it jonnysaint.this should be a grt place.bottom line figure still adds up as far as the brewery is concerned so they wont give a monkeys.been very recently and nothing has changed.very poor

The Black Horse, Thurnham

i always said theres never going to be a pub that gets a 10 from me.been a few times again.if your looking for the best sunday roast 9.95{compare this to the hidden charges at the white horse down the road} in the southeast drive here,BUT BOOK!!!.medium rare beef,a huge portion,al dente veg{be-aware they are cooked as they should be}a hugeeeeeeeeee yorkie.really good ale, fine wine..now got rooms for dodgy assignations and weekly entertainment in the bar.it is virtually perfect.i dont like pubs that have two sittings for dinner and this prevents it getting the 10.it gets a big "NINE POINT NINE.

The Horseshoes, East Farleigh

i suspect the previous reviewer was a former employee.complete waste of his time being here.been back to this place for a valantines eve meal.was grt again.went or the scallops and a crayfish salad.the scallops were excellent as always but i wish i had ordered the seafood ravioli with citrus dressing.nothing wrong with the salad,i just ordered wrng.went on to order chicken wrapped in ham with a lovely garlicky cream sauce and we also ordered the bass fillets.the fillets were huge and completely bone free.i had lemon posset for desert which is a lovely light and refreshing way to fininshing a meal.grt wine list, well kept landlord.made a point of chatting to the gaffer who was friendly and attentive through the meal.if hes spitting in the fod he should bottle it and sell it.the foods grt.the rating creeps up to 8.we will be back!!

The Angel Inn, Lymington

went again and was turned away,no dogs grrrrrrrrr.we went on market day and the place was busy.i will just have to admit i just cant get on with the place.the menu remains a good one so it looks like the new chef may still be about.cant change my rating because i didnt get in,but all those folk cant be wrong i suppose??

The Hare and Hounds, Sway

recently visited this pub again on a sunday lunch while on hols.we had been here before again on a sunday and was good then and didnt dissapoint this time.as with the previous reviewer,it was very busy again and when we phoned to ask if we could bring the dog the advice was to get there early.we were sat outside with other customers before 12.theres a good wine list and all helped along with beer from ringwood.a great beer very well kept.the food again was good.its basic fair for sunday lunch with a few specails, prawn cocktail and house pate will give you an idea.the sunday roast was a winner again.add friendly staff and youve got a winner.this will never give a local feel, the car park has visiting motor caravans and tourists, but maintains a very friendly feel.

The Hook and Hatchet, Hucking

just revisited this pub.what a differnce!!!!!!.my son and i walked our dogs around the estate and went in for abit of lunch.i had a very clear cool pint of master brew.very well kept and a pleasure to drink.we ordered abit of lunch which included a tuna and mozzerella melt.the tuna was moist and tasted of una, unlike some you get in pubs which are dry and only taste of the salty water its kept in while in the tin.i ordered sardines, what a joy.these were fresh sardines which had been headed and tailed and!! boned.there was a perfect marinade of recurrants a brilliant foil for the oily richness of the fish.the fish itself was moist.the dish was dressed with fresh redcurrants.both small plate dishes had a garnish of well dress salad which was in proportion to the main ingredient.i was that impressed to go and order another cpl of small plates.i insisted my son have another one so i could have a look.he ordered the deep fried brie.it looked home coated and again the dish was dressed really well.i had the mushroom and stilton pate, served with excellent quality bread and butter and a really pleasing onion compote.again with just the rite amount of salad.its good to see that the landlord has stuck to individual pots of coffee.served to you hot, theres just something nice about the ritual of pouring your own coffee for yourself and whoever your with.i eyed the wines available.theres a chat-pap and a good grand cru as wines of the month,i also saw laurent perrier in the fridge, our fav fizz, not sure if this is sold by the glass???this is a small detail, but the salt on the table is sea salt.this demonstrates an eye for detail and to me shows appreciation for food, theres nothing worse than putting processed pouring salt over good food.when i visited this place at one point the garden area had rusting old bar-b-cues strewn about and abandoned.the gardens now have been all ptruned back and there is evidence that there is going to be fresh planting.we sat outside and its easy to see how pleasant this will be in bloom.the staff were very good.very friendly on approach to the bar, interested in explaining the menu.there was 4 dishes which were not available but the visit was on a weds lunchtime, but hopefully thats not a habit.the staff wereattentive when serving the food.theres one thing dan,plz reconsider allowing dogs in a small part of the pub,the hook is the only one locally that doesnt allow dogs and theres so much walking space behind.the landlord here is backing himself.im not sure if the road sign outside nottcutts is still there, but ive seen investment in an advertisement in the "verve" freebie mag.well done dan, word will get round.my rating for this pub has gone from a 4 to a cautious 7.i say that because i would like to have main meals at a busy time, and will do soon.try it again polomint,i appreciate what happened should not have happened and believe an invite should have been sent to you here by dan.a sandwich on them would be really good customer care?

13 Feb 2008 15:16

The Ringlestone Inn, Ringlestone

keep looking keento.this is still a half desent place.bt your 10 out of 10 is off the mark by someway.its a grt shame you didnt go in 2005.it was a free house for a start and had alot more well kept beers.the food also had a very good widespread reputation.a pub run by sheperd neame is never going to be the place your seeking.i can see why an american my be impressed by the "quaint" surroundings, but remember why you go into a pub to start.theres lots more places out there worthy of your keen eye and i wish you very happy times finding them.youve got some real gems not far from where you were.

The White Horse, Bearsted Green

have written god reviews about this place and read pearcys review with horror.ive not been anywhere for awhile but am planning a trip to check out wots going on here and the hook and hatchet.i know they were having staff probs in the kitchen and wonder if this is a blip.i agree the staff front of hse are good and you tend to see familiar faces.completely agree with pearcy about the cost of veg.it should come in price,it could be considered hidden and pushes prices up to resturant level.can i suggest the horseshoes at east farliegh, not local to you i admit, but more transparent with cost and at lunchtimes is beating the white horse at the mo.prefer the menu too.

29 Jan 2008 22:20

The Hook and Hatchet, Hucking

not been again, just an awnser to dan.good for you.but i must say again that hand written signs are not the way forward,it is tacky sorry.lets see you big yourself up in the local press.i will honestly sing anyones praises whose making a go of it.i really hope the chef is making use of the huge amount of fresh produce rite on his doorstep and not just taking a delivery from brakes brothers.youve also got the huge estate rite behind you.its a shame you are not letting in well behaved dogs? youve got a sep area from the resturant? youve got a cracker there and i will be back, sadly without alf.the food was good at both flaming henrys and the oak on the green,if the chef can do the same flying solo from a big company youve got it sussed.i sence a english pub with modern english food screaming there.your place was buzzing once with just word of mouth, and you sound a determined bloke.good luck with it.

The White Horse, Bearsted Green

have been many times gain and not been let down.was served a flat champagne on one occassion and that was changed quicker than it was served after the manager tasted it.was served the salmon ravioli with citrus dressing,an absolute winner.the drinks here are good.t taylor is kept very well.the beaujeaus is kept the best ive ever had, being very cold.bottled beers include aspalls cider.as previous reviews.the staff were grt again.always a very friendly welcome for our small terriers in the bar.i feel bound to raise my rating.see you in there barexpert!!

The White Horse, Bearsted Green

wow.are you genuine barexpert or are you the manager.ejoyed reading your profile and just the type of folk we feel we are.the pub is good.but that looks like a thinly vieled advert lol??????????

11 Dec 2007 18:20

The Hook and Hatchet, Hucking

recently seen the licensee in bearsted checking out the competion??? hand painted signs on roundabouts outside nottcuts smacks of desparate.this place was once full on word of mouth custom.checked it out again.left beer and pub.still same chef.still not good sorry!! i will try again undertaker,as ive said on another of my postings i dont give up on such a nice place.but a fire isnt enough.

The William the Conqueror, Rye Harbour

difficult one.it is tatty and has lino floors, but bernie the gaffer does no frills stuff here and i accept it for that.ive found the beer ok,the wine is cheap and ok when youve swallowed the first mouthful{it never fails to make dad and i shudder} and is as cheap as chips. we adore the crab sarnies and the fried "bish and bips" are good.i wouldnt venture to much more.i dont think berie professes to be a chef.at the end of the season bernie longs for it all to be over so he can start closing in he afternoon.dont expect much and i would tend to go when its sunny so you can sit outside.bernie always maes kids welcome and when my very young terrier disgraced his-self in the bar,the owner didnt bat an eyelid, just passed out a mop and said thats why hes happy with lino.im not going to say make sure you go here, but im drawn here for some reason and really dont feel its as bad as a 2.4,im going to sit on the fence and say i dont know.if your down in the harbour bird watching in the reserve it will get you out of trouble.

The Queens Head, Icklesham

ths is a lovely pub.ive been using this place since it was one room big in the late 60s.its a lovely spot, fabulous views.the staff are friendly and the beers are grt.go on a music nite{weds or thurs}.grt atmosphere.the food is good but agree with reviews below.its not changed for what seems forever and agree that the attitude will be "if its not broke".they will still always be full.go for the sausage in french bread for a snack with a pint, but check the scallops out.they are microwaved and scoulding hot,but still good.the deep fried brie is also a fav.we were once often found driving there from maidstone, but its too samey now and weve moved on.when we do go to rye/hastings we still go in.3 generations of our family now know it well.

14 Oct 2007 20:38

The Angel Inn, Lymington

im with plumbpudding.dont give up on a place instantly.we stayed here awhile ago and it was a disaster.the staff were unfriendly, they just didnt want to be there.the milk in the morning was off and we all had to wait for someone to go out and get milk.the bar is tacky and filthy.the food in the eve was a shocker,we didnt eat it,just clocked it as it was served to others.we went to a hotel across the road for supper{the stanwell, fine dining lovely}.dont give up,went met some family there who like the place?????? and was talked into staying for dinner, wat a change, they have taken a chef on by the looks of things.really good food beautfully presented.we were asked how we would like our tuna cooked, thats how things should be,we asked for medium but sadly that still came up well done and dry.the resturant is worth another visit john, but sadly the pub remains unfriendly and filthy, add to this a bar full of drunks after an england game and you get the pic.so,food grt,pub rubbish.

14 Oct 2007 20:29

The Horseshoes, East Farleigh

run by the same people who run the "White horse" at bearsted green.its now a food lead outlet and i agree wth the previous reviewer, its very tastefully done.theres landlord bitter on.very well kept.this place was a hell hole not long ago.it was full of hypnotic fruit machines with accompaning hoots and toots and ball ponds.its now stylish with stylish drinks and very good food.the sunday lunch here was really good having been taken for fathers day,it may have helped i wasnt paying???.the staff are very good.we went here when it was refurbed once and my drink was remembered by the barman a week later when we returned, that makes a big difference.our waiter{mark} sat down with us and explained the dishes, abit familiar,no it was done because he was genuinely enthusiastic about the menu.the starter of salmon on a rosti with capers is a cracker, the goats cheese wrapped in air dried ham was just as good.the mushroom starter seems abit mean.these starters are starter size and not main meal size.look out for the corn beef hash, lovely.sadly the fillet my daughter had was ordinary.we were also asked to try a desert the chef had done that day for feedback.its a lovely place for a family meal, bright airie and had a grt vibe about the place.weve only been once in the eve and it wasnt as good,so review is purely on our lunchtime visits.will be going regularly.

14 Oct 2007 19:52

The Black Horse, Thurnham

where do i start, this is prob my fav place.this place is food lead but the beers are nice and you get a country pub feel about the bar area.theres a rango of country wines available and they are lovely with a splash of sosa as they come up sweeter than grape wine.try a mix of strawberry wine with a dry sparkling white.they do a fantastic bottle of pink bubbles for 13 quid,no need to spend a fortune on champagne.open log fires and folk with dogs just give it a reall welcoming local feel.never cliquey.the food is first class with a kitchen team.they have specails available during lunchtimes which i believe is about 8 quid for 2 courses, being a couple of simple starters and the same main choice.the price rises to 13 quid in the eves but remains grt value food cooked by chefs and not pub cooks.the outside seating offers dabbled shade in the sun and open garden area.they now have really nice rooms,so if you want to take your partner away for a romantic surprise look no further.if you have seen any of my revies b4 you will know im very critical about food and drink and staff.the staff here are eastern european,a trend at the mo,and they are grt.they know the menu and you dont get them walking off to find out what your going on about to the chef.just a joy.ive never given a pub/resturant a 10,but this is sooooooooo close.this place has a sister pub,"The angel" at addington.another nice place.go!!

14 Oct 2007 19:32

The Oak On The Green, Bearsted

nice place.weve been the using the place a number of yrs.goachers is good.we have had probs recently with a young barman who is the most miserable sod weve come across.we were recently turned away at lunch when the place didnt have a soul in it due to a dress code????????? who was my son going to offend outside when no-one was there?? the rest of the staff are a joy.the food is grt,but follows the trend of serving main size courses for starters.theres no room for a main course after wards.folk will say this represents value, but we would rather pay four quid for a taster and move on to some of the very good main courses.they will serve the pealla as a veg option with just seafood.the serrano prawns are a real winner and if you take someone with a big appitite, try the steamer, very comforting.theyve stopped doing the choc fondue now,but puds are good too.sadly there is a need to smoother everything with piles of chips.if you go with dogs you will also be welcomed.over all very good.give it a try.

14 Oct 2007 19:05

The Hook and Hatchet, Hucking

can only agree with the previous reviewer, what a crying shame.this was a free house until recently.was a fabulous place for a ride out.grt out door seating which allowed alfresco eating of really good food.the owners were friendly and cared.sadly its now in the hands of a sheperd neame tenant.when we visited a few monthes ago a rottwieller was loose in the bar and instantly took a leak on the bar floor having seen our dogs.the dog was put away but the wee remained.it was down hill from there.i think its been taken over again and think it may have improved but the obviously need to change the chef.we looked at the menu and it didnt inspire.again, this is a pub and not a resturant and the beers are of good quality.i would be very happy buying the kitchen from the owner,it could be a gold mine.if you do visit with your own dog, dont forget to take a mop

12 Oct 2007 23:14

The Ringlestone Inn, Ringlestone

very sadly this place has been taken over by sheperd neame along with another pub close to us "hook and hatchet" at hucking.both were free houses and both have suffered badly.we have been using the ringlestone for soooooo many years,we took our kids when they were very small and they have in turn used it too.the food has gone down hill dramatically.printed cards supplied by the ice-cream supplier seems tacky for a wonderful olde world charm pub.this pub remains a nice ride out on a sunday if your just going to have a drink.the wood burner is lovely to sit nxt too in the winter{get there early for those seats} and the garden is lovely.the beers behind the bar in barrels have gone and you are just left with the normal shepaerd neame names, although these are well worth having and very well kept.still got a nice candle-lite atmoshere for the romantics.

The Muggleton Inn, Maidstone

cheap booze,thats it.dirty and shabby.dont bother.

The White Horse, Bearsted Green

oh!!!!! the coffee IS virually cold

12 Oct 2007 22:52

The Cock Inn, Luddesdowne

the previous reviewer has knock it on the head.its the most cliquey pub ive ever used.this pub is in a very small community and tends to serve that, its just doesnt feel comfy.we have been using the pub since the owner had cards on the table telling visitors that it was a pub for ales sake and not a resturant.they ended up doing food and a number of chefs have come and gone.the best being graham,as far as im aware is now at fawkham green.the beers at this pub are among the best in kent.ive peeked at the cellar through the open doors while a delivery was taking place and its amazing how good a job is done with such a small celler.the pub remains a free house and beers from all over are found.the owner would certainly never sell his sole to interbrew no matter how large the carrot to do so.i imagine that this could be the best pub in kent for an assignation.its dead most lunchtimes.again i can see last reviewers point, but i cant resist the occasional trip to this lovely pub for a pint of goachers mild,a drink virtually extinct now.its still worth a visit but be prepared to enter a world thats similar to a scene from "a league of gentlemen"

12 Oct 2007 22:51

The White Horse, Bearsted Green

its with some sorrow i read the reviews below, but must say i sympathise in some respects.im a self confessed foodie and freelance pub/resturant writer, not that this qualifies me any more than anyone else.i have used this pub mainly at lunchtimes and once in the eves.the first time we went we were recieved by highly motivated staff who talked the new pub up.since then ive worked through the menu and agree with the reviews below to a certain extent.the one visit in the eve was a complete disaster.all the food ive had which has always started with scallops of the day has been very good, although the price is the top end.ive never eaten the same scallop recipe and they have always been perfect.the sunday lunch was very good but again at london prices, its too expensive.we have been accommodated in the bar with the resturant menu because we have 2 terriers who go every where with us.the drinks range on offer is very good.the "landlord" bitter is very well kept and there is a very good range of continental beer, not at the same price as weatherspoons, but you dont have to put up with the filthy conditions found in muggletons.you can get laurent perrier at the pub for less than they charge at asda!!.the pub is in a grt location on the green,a good view of the cricket if thats your thing, and it has a very light and airie feel.your served with top qaulity breads and balasmic vinegar/oil,another spin off from the yuppie london pub scene which may annoy some.given the reviews below and my experience,i wouldnt use the pub in the eve again.we had trouble when we were refused our last order to see the nxt table served more drinks some 20 mins later and when we questioned the staff about our probs the shift manager reverted to using the word "sir" in a very dismissive and patronising manner pointing the finger at Ross the manager who wasnt around rather than make a decision herself.ive always found the manager very approachable.if people dont feel they can go here again for lunch, try the black horse at thurnham, not the oak on the green unless your into artery crippling piles of chips, but thats a different review.its true, this is not a traditional pub,but wonder if the young man below has ever had time to visit one,i know he has,wot seems a lifetime of 6 yrs of legal drinking behind him,but 99% of them went alongtime ago,can i suggest "the cock inn" at luddesdown, try this for a sunday lunchtime.so,i feel the pub is worth a visit for lunch, over priced, but it sounds we have been consistently???? lucky with the food, and one of the undermanagement team has no idea.sort it out Ross, youve got a grt place but your letting too many folk down and word is getting round.
