Fox and Hounds, Caversham

Interesting pub trivia - this pub is the only place John Lennon and Paul McCartney ever performed as a duo. They appeared as the" Nerk Twins" after hitchhiking down from Liverpool to stay with Paul's cousin, the then landlady, in 1960. They also served behind the bar during the week.

I agree with Ridgeway Rambler - decent refurbishment (great effort outside - hopefully some decent weather will see this area come into its own) and better value food than under previous management, but quality of meals still a bit and miss due to them not being fresh. Also they are a bit over-eager to rush people to their table, which doesn't really make for the relaxing experience a trip to your local pub should be. But all-in-all a good start.

Seems that it is being refurbished by new owners. Let's hope for the best.

I understand this pub is closing due to the landlord/lady moving away. This pub has bags of potential for somebody willing to put the work in. Located on a junction, in a village where the Ridgeway and Thames Paths cross, meaning loads of walkers passing. Overnight accommodation and a reasonably decent-sized restaurant. The village is reasonably affluent, so a good value, good quality simple (not gastro!) menu would mean plenty of locals eating there on a regular basis. It needs a bit of redecorating, but is a lovely looking pub otherwise, with an open fire for the winter, and a nice beer garden for the summer. Somebody must be able to make a success of it.

Great, friendly local with very friendly landlady. A shame they replaced a very good Theakston's with IPA but otherwise faultless. Open fire is very welcoming but watch your head on the (padded) beam near the bar.
