The Dacre Arms, Lee

If Carlsberg made pubs, this is what they'd look like. Probably the best pub in the world.

The Strands Hotel, Nether Wasdale

New owners know their business - now serving the best food in the lakes (think massive portions of slow cooked beef, pork, variety of game etc) and a really well kept selection of ales. I'm told the wine list is about to improve as well, so I'm looking forward to checking that out - might even have to drink two or three bottles. It's a tough job but someone's got to do it.

The Princess of Wales, Blackheath

Refurb in 2004 is now starting to look a bit grubby round the edges, which is great - because you don't feel like you're pissed up in an episode of Changing Rooms any more.
Location is unbeatable, beer selection is wide, wine is good, menu is good, and they've brought back some of the chairs they threw out when they tried to do the place up two years ago - the POW is turning into that nice boozer on the heath again. Result.

The Railway, Blackheath

Does a great selection of beers and excellent food for a local pub if you can stomach the prices.
Bar staff are without exception zoolander types who spend too much time practising their pout and talking to one another, and not enough time serving beer, so it can take an age to get served, but once you actually get a pint (and there are plenty to choose from) it's a nice place to be. Lots of different wine to choose from too. For the ladies like.

The Nags Head, Belgravia

A good pub worth at least one visit despite the utterly belligerent landlord's relentless efforts to convince you he's the richest/most well connected luvvie in the entire world, and the often mind-numbing conversations between him and the drunk suit at the bar who would like to make it clear that he's considerably richer than you too.
Go once and enjoy a unique boozer, great beer and (maybe) an interesting chat with a stranger, but be warned, the sheen wears off quickly.

The Harp, Covent Garden

Great cosy, hidey hole type pub perfect for summer or winter. In fact it's annoyingly good - I'd really like to go somewhere else for post-work pints, for a change of scene really, but nowhere cuts the mustard when compared to this place.

The Toucan, Soho

The geezer behind the bar showed us some photos of Richard Harris & Peter O'Toole getting wasted in there together - which surely has to be a point in favour of any hostelry?
Actually, come to think of it they probably weren't that fussy where they drank.

The Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham

Could be a great pub - the music is excellent but the clientele are pretentious to the point of distraction.
Great if you were born in the eighties, have no ideas of your own and want to wear period costume, pretend you're a mod and think you're a bit ironic and alternative.
Rubbish otherwise.

The Newt and Cucumber, Birmingham

Why watch documentaries about binge drinking and violent crime when you can drink here and get the real thing? The beer's cheap too!

The Cock Inn, Wishaw

This pub is so comically pretentious it's worth a visit.

Orange women
Criminals in Ralph Lauren
Voracious snobbery
Bad food and worse service.

It's pants.
