The Jolly Farmer, Worplesdon

I had the hump big time last time I was in here, but I'm more or less over it now.

Nice lunch today (duck risotto) and a couple of pints of Wild River - Fuller's excellent attempt at replicating an American craft IPA.

This beer is going to be available thoughout what passes for our "summer" these days. Lovely pint - but any other oldloafers out there remember 1976...?

Worplesdon Place Hotel, Worplesdon

A Beefeater / Premier Inn and does what it says on the tin perfectly well. Beer was more than acceptable. I had the St Austell Trelawny - very enjoyable, and they had two other cask beers on as well. Burgers were fine too.

It's part of a chain so don't expect quirky individuality or surprises, but it does what it is supposed to do. Nice garden too overlooking a lake.

Hmm. Rang the day before to check how late they would be serving food on the Tuesday of the Jubilee bank holiday, Was told 7.30pm. When we got there at 7pm they said they had decided to stop at 6pm instead "because they had been so busy".

Not impressed. Had a pint of Pride anyway which was ok, but then had to go on somewhere else to get something to eat...

The Blue Ship, The Haven

A very pleasant journey back in time. Beer tapped straight from the cask is served to you from a hatch, and there are no comfy chairs at all - just hard wooden ones. Possibly unsuitable for any old loafers suffering from piles as a result.

Two Badger beers available (Sussex and a seasonal one) and truly excellent food. Pork belly with artichokes highly recommended. Mind you the prices are bang up to date - 3.85 for a pint is rather a lot even in 2012...

The Refectory, Godalming

I really feel I should like this pub more than I do. The beer is excellent - good choice of local cask beer and very well looked after. The food isn't bad either and the table staff are friendly, obliging and (frankly - fellow old loafers) uniformly drop dead gorgeous. But somehow it all feels a bit of a production line. Perhaps I still can't get the carvery it was years ago out of my head. Worth going for the beer alone though - no question.

The Keystone, Guildford

A proper pub for adults, out of the way of the nearby Bridge Street hordes who should be at home revising for their GCSEs. Pretty quiet midweek evenings - so a good place for a civilised drink.
Usually three cask beers on. Alton's Pride is always excellent. There is also 6X and a guest beer. Food is good and not overpriced (though nowhere in Guildford is cheap).
Light, airy, comfortable - and with a bar billiards table.

The Red Lion, Cricklade

Felt like I'd died and gone to heaven when I walked in here. About 10 cask beers - and a table by the log fire for Sunday lunch. A proper pub for drinking in but great food too.

My oldloafer rule the first time I try a pub is to have a beer I know - that way I can judge how good it is. The Moles Best in here was spot on, and only 2.85.

Staff were friendly and efficient, and in June their own brewery at the back of the pub will start production.

This is one of the ten best pubs I have ever been in - no question.

Park View, Brighton

Perhaps the future is orange after all. I had an orange liquid with a slice of orange in it in here - an American (craft keg) oat beer called Blue Moon. Very moreish.

As a result I can't comment on the cask beer quality - didn't have any.

Despite mostly negative comments from other BITE users I had an enjoyable evening. Pub was buzzing but not over busy on a Saturday night. Four of us got a table and had some food at 8.30 pm. Food was good, staff and other punters were friendly.

Can't comment on the prices though - my mate paid after we had spent the day helping him assemble his new shed. Us oldloafers know how to live...

The Rowbarge, Guildford

Great choice of cask beer. Only regular outlet for Ascot Ales in Guildford that I know about. A great Tuesday night open mic session which is suitable for all oldloafers (i.e. does not consist entirely of 18 year old Ed Sheeran wannabes).

The Rose and Thistle, Frimley Green

...oh, and they have Fruli Strawberry beer on tap too, which pleased the wife.

The Rose and Thistle, Frimley Green

Three cask beers on when I was in there and two cask ciders too. I had the guest beer (Red Squirrel Hopfest) and it was excellent. Food was good too and reasonably priced. Staff were perfectly friendly - despite some of the earlier comments here. It wasn't what you'd call busy though - but it was a weekday so that might explain it.

The Jolly Farmer, Bramley

Great place for real ales. I had a pint of Langhams Sundowner and it was top quality. And it's worth gazing up at the ceiling at all the beer mats celebrating long forgotten brews - many of which I remember (with varying degrees of affection) from when I was a youngloafer.

They do food too but I didn't have any so cannot comment.

Red Lyon, Slinfold

Unexceptional. Not awful by any means but not really worth a trip. Two or three cask beers - which are ok but unadventurous (London Pride and Greene King IPA were available last time I was in there). Food is a tad overpriced for what it is (despite some rather fancy names...). Not especially congenial.

The Sun Inn, Dunsfold

Met a friend here for lunch. Top notch pint of Harvey's Sussex and an excellent steak sandwich. Unspoilt traditional pub. There were plenty of tables available on a Friday but I understand it is best to book ahead at the weekends.

The Albany, Guildford

Good buzzing atmosphere on a Friday evening without being painfully busy. They had Theakston's Old Peculier on which was an unexpected treat and very nice. Usually I have the Deuchars IPA which is always reliable.

Comfortable, nicely furnished with very friendly (if slightly harassed) staff.

There is a wide choice of wine by the glass too, but I have never had it myself so cannot give a personal recommendation...

The Angel and Greyhound, Oxford

Friendly Young's pub. I had the Ordinary which was lovely. It's all open plan which makes it a little souless, but a good bet nonetheless.

The Griffin Inn, Chipping Warden

I popped in here for a pint and some lunch. The Wychwood Hobgoblin was very drinkable indeed, and the food perfectly acceptable (I had a panini). Friendly staff. Very quiet though for a Friday lunchtime.

The Star, Sulgrave

Lovely unspoilt pub. The Hook Norton beers are always good and they usually have Hooky Bitter and one other on. Food is good too (pub food rather than a gastro pub but very nice), and the locals are a very friendly and inclusive lot. It is genuinely hard to stand at the bar for more than 30 seconds and not end up in a conversation. I've stayed here a couple times on business and the rooms and breakfasts are good too. Highly recommended.

The Inn, Greatworth

Friendly and comfortable community pub - and good value lunchtime food (ham egg and chips in my case). Hook Norton tied house which always helps. I had a pint of Hooky Bitter which went down a treat.

7 Mar 2012 23:13

The Sun, Godalming

Friendly locals' pub. More of a "working man's" pub than many in Godalming but none the worse for that. On my most recent visit I had a pint of Pickled Partridge which was frankly gorgeous. Badger beer can be a bit sweet for my taste but this one was hoppy and delicious. Food is normal pub grub but good value in my opinion.

7 Mar 2012 23:09

The Star, Godalming

Nice historic pub and a Godalming institution for its cider as well as the beer. On this visit I met a friend for lunch and had a lovely pint of Leeds Brewery Gathering Storm stout and a (very nice) burger. Service was very friendly but verging on the disorganised. They always have some beer on handpump and some others straight from the cask. I tend to avoid the ones straight from the cask as they can be a bit flat in my experience.

7 Mar 2012 23:02

The Ypres Castle Inn, Rye

I love this place. A proper drinker's pub but good food too, and a great location, out of the throng of Rye shoppers / browsers. On this lunchtime visit I had a beautiful pint of Larkins Best and a proper Steak and Kidney Pud. A slight kitchen cockup caused a delay to the wife's dessert - but the landlord stood me a drink while we waited, so I'm not complaining. Only downside is that like pretty much everywhere in Rye it ain't exactly cheap.

7 Mar 2012 22:53

The Tiger Inn, Stowting

Went there on a Sunday evening with the missus for something to eat. Good choice of Kentish beer and cider - I had the Old Dairy Red Top which was lovely. Food was good too but not cheap. If you're booking ahead it's worth asking for a table in the bar - which is atmospherically candle-lit in the evenings. The restaurant is rather soulless by comparison.

7 Mar 2012 22:41

Red Cow, Sandwich

Four beers on. I had the Old Dairy Blue Top. It was a pretty cold day and the beer rather matched the weather - as did the pub which though warm in its welcome was not that warm in the more prosaic temperature sense. No real complaints but I'll probably try a different pub next time I'm in Sandwich.

7 Mar 2012 22:34

Royal Mail, Romney Marsh

Excellent pint of master brew. Nicely refurbished and friendly staff. But at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon I was the only customer. No idea why.

7 Mar 2012 22:29

The Rose and Crown, Elham

Went in here on a Wednesday lunchtime. Lovely pint of master brew and an excellent lunch (Lamb followed by Apple Pie). Apparently the chef does a mean West Indian curry too. The current licencees have only been here a few months and I would say it is well worth a try. Food service was maybe a little slow - and they weren't busy - but otherwise excellent.
