The Czech Bar, West Hampstead

Wonderful place - Pilsner Urquell and Budvar on tap. Decent Czech food. There's even Slovak slivowitz for the brave/foolhardy.

This is very much a Czech and Slovak haunt, and Anglos are very much in the minority. Provided you're fine with that you'll fit in well.

The Hollybush, Loughton

Prices seem to be going up here - 4.45 for a pint of Peroni. They must be trying to 'compete' with the Nu Bar. Mercy please!

The Lamb, Bloomsbury

I hate to say it, but I think the Lamb is going downhill fast. been coming in here for ten happy years, but the last couple of trips have been a big letdown.

First, they had a really great barman who's left - he looked a bit like Dobbie the house elf - but was incredibly efficient. You barely had to move from your seat and a bottle of Kew Gold/ Champion would find its way to the counter ready to be opened.

Secondly, someone deliberately installed a new tartan carpet.

Thirdly, the new Eastern European barstaff at random at best. Set out a drinks order and what you get, the measures for spirit drinkers, and what you pay seems to vary throughout the evening.

A terrible pity, as it used to be a great pub.

The Ship Tavern, Holborn

Went in here last night for a post-prandial double brandy and was short-measured by the barmaid - she didn't even make the pretense of waiting for the optic to fill. It wasn't like I was at the other end of the bar, she was almost in front of me so I could see exactly what was happening.

I made her pour another one - probably should just have walked out. Did I get an apology, did I heck.

Not coming back, which is a pity as it looked a reasonable pub. A few too many braying lawyers, but that's an occupational hazzard in Holborn.

The Rising Sun, Tottenham Court Road

High prices, quiz machine on the blink, barman with issues in the sense of humour department.

Think I'll give it a miss in future

The Shaston Arms, Soho

Seemed a good pub to me, First Gold on tap, and a friendly crowd - rare for Soho. It's a bit difficult to manoeuvre to the bar, but the clientele seem to accept that and don't mewl when you try to get past them.

The Queens Head and Artichoke, Regents Park

I was peacefully sitting at one end of a long table last night having a beer with a mate. A couple with a toddler were at the other end.

French waiter trots over to chuck us all off the table because it was 'reserved'. No reservation sign in sight of course. He then brings one from another table as if that is supposed to settle the matter. If of course he'd acted politely and said he'd made a mistake that would be one thing, but he didn't.

There's a right way and a wrong way to deal with things, and this pub is currently choosing the wrong way. Won't be going back for a couple of years until there's been some staff turnover.

The Cuckfield, Wanstead

Not a bad place - it has a great beer garden, nice decor inside and a good range of drinks

On the downside, the bar staff wouldn't win awards for speed, and the food isn't good considering the cost (the whitebait being a very honourable exception)

Still prefer the Nightingale though when I'm in the area

The Peasant, Clerkenwell

Liked this place - anywhere with Brewers Gold has to be ok.

The Harlequin, City

Used to love this place - an Islington pub not overrun with wannabe idiots. Great music, decent prints on the walls, and two dogs.

Sadly someone has now given it the standard makeover with lurid red walls and iffy sofas.

Won't be going back.
