The Alexandra Arms, Cambridge

in spite of recent publicity regarding its 1 (out of 5) Food Hygiene rating, I think this place is still worth a try for beer. If they sort out the kitchen, they could really make something of the pub.

The Bun Shop, Cambridge

benscaro indeed being a little bitchy :-) I can see his/her point, though. It is the Brewpub equivalent of Malmaison hotels: nice, clean, professional and.. a bit tedious. People who like places like this will like this place. So it will do well in Cambridge.

It's ok, though: perfect if your in-laws are visiting on Father's day or suchlike.

The Cambridge Blue, Cambridge

TWG is right, there has been a lot of building work done over the past couple of years. Beer quality and choice still as good as ever. The food lets it down, but it has never really been known for that. This pub and the Geldart are easily the best in the area, probably in Cambridge.

Under new management, but the Landlord is still Greene King. You wouldn't know it though, as they seem to be letting the managers/tenants choose beer off tie. Worth a visit. Food wasn't great when I went, but Blue, geldart and kingston not far away.

Clarendon Arms, Cambridge

Under ( yet another ) new manager. Still a good pub, as it was under the previous 3. No idea what's going on here, but ale's well kept and pub is good. In spite of whatever the Green King landlords are doing.

The Bath Arms, Brighton

Haven't been in for a while, but would recommend it. Good beer, good food, good service, nicely kept hostelry.

The Devonshire Arms, Cambridge

Good beer, good reputation. Just could be so much better with a bit of attention to small things. Staff were outside smoking constantly, with customers waiting at an unmanned bar. I don't grudge them a fag, but they could at least wipe the bar down before they go out, it's awash in beer even when it's quiet. Generally good though, and apparently food is good.

The Carpenters Arms, Cambridge

Re-opened recently: I didn't have high hopes but it's really good. Good beer, cracking service, good food. I suppose it's slightly too far out of the town centre to make it onto most people's radar, but I'd recommend it.

All Bar One, Cambridge

Just to repeat what others have said - awful. I don't mind "bars" ( as distinct from pubs) . I don't even mind some chains. But this place is dreadful - staff haven't been trained to even look interested in customers, there is cutlery on nearly all tables ( fancy eating with a fork that several other people have been drinking beer over?). And the menu is massive - no way the stuff is freshly cooked in my opinion. Avoid.

Elm Tree, Cambridge

Cracking pub. Great beer, staff who know what they're talking about. No food , but Thai pub 3 paces away does good stuff.

The Kingston Arms, Cambridge

It's fine - not as good as it was, but fine. Good beer, but too many gimmicks - they seem to keep tinkering what was once an excellent, simple pub. Food ok and very slow. Used to be great and a bit slow. Decor weird and cheap-looking - used to be simple and nice. I still go , though, so there must be something.

The Haymakers, Chesterton

Changed hands recently and is a bit better. Still seems to be a work in progress - toilets and cleaning need attention, service a bit "quirky" or slipshod depending how you look at it. Getting there, though, so probably worth a look in a few weeks.
