The Bull, Streatley

Very sad. The new management seem to have turned this once lovely pub into a crèche with a licence to sell alcohol. The place was full of uncontrolled shrieking toddlers.

If you like children doing headstands in the restaurant whilst their parents look on then this is the pub for you.

The Bunk Inn, Curridge

Dreadful. Went in at lunchtime, pub almost empty with loud pop music blaring. Food was very expensive and not good at all (e.g. ham not properly cooked). Avoid if you can.

Compton Swan Hotel, Compton

Very disappointed in this pub after reading all the hype in local magazines. There is no proper beer, just Greene King bitter masquerading as Swan bitter and the food was mediocre and expensive. The pub interior is dark and gloomy (presumably by design because it didn't used to be) although the garden area is nice. Won't be returning any time soon.

The Greyhound, Tidmarsh

Avoid. This pub is "family friendly" which translates as having spoilt shrill toddlers rushing around the bar area. Add this to the eye-watering price of the drinks and you have two reasons to drive on.

The Rising Sun, Reading

Closed and boarded up. Another one bites the dust!

The Ferryboat Inn, Whitchurch on Thames

Atmosphere of a morgue (lunchtime) and sky high drinks prices. Avoid.

Fleur de Lys, East Hagbourne

Stll a very good traditional pub with a lovely landlady.

The Volunteer, Theale

The new management evidently wants to run a kindergarten so if you like to see toddlers on the bar stools and rolling on the floor this is the place for you.

The Greyhound, Tidmarsh

Definitely don't stop off here unless you have deep pockets. The drinks prices are at least 20% above the going rate locally. I drank the guest ale Beartown from cheshire and the first one was cloudy which suggests the pipes had not been cleared. Food O.K., at least you know the food prices before you order.

The Sun, Whitchurch Hill

Always good pub grub and a decent pint. The ladies who run it are very friendly and efficient.

The Bear and Dragon, Tilehurst

Drove past the other day and the pub is open again. Rare event these days.

The Tally Ho, Newtown

Drove past the other day and the Tally Ho was closed and boarded up. Sad.

The Rowbarge, Woolhampton

Things are looking up. Have been going in this pub occasionally for years, right back to when Laurence Naismith the actor was landlord. We have eaten here twice recently and everything was fine on both occasions. It was busy both times and the staff were busy but all were friendly and doing their best. My only slight criticism is that all the draught lagers were strong ones.

Castle Inn, Cold Ash

This is without a doubt the best real pub for miles around. Despite living 12 miles away we have been regulars here for more than 20 years. (what's wrong with 1979 anyway, previous reviewer?). Run by a very friendly family, good beers and lager always well kept, excellent value pub grub and used by lots of friendly people. My idea of a proper pub and I've been in over a thousand!

The Bull, Streatley

Above average pub with decent beer and tolerable pub-grub. Our visit was enjoyable in spite of the supercilious attitude and rudeness of the young barman.

The Beehive, Upper Basildon

The Beehive is still closed and for sale.

The Red Lion, Upper Basildon

As this is now the only pub for miles around, for us it was "any port in a storm". Don't order a meal if you want to get home any time soon as we were the first order of the evening and waited almost an hour.

The Fox and Hounds, Peasemore

I would say this is a pub to be avoided unless you are desperate. The landlord is somewhat lacking in charisma to say the least. His reply to my opening friendly remark was, quote, "whatever blows your frock up". The lager was on the turn which takes some doing. His wife was much nicer but the baked potato I had with "locally sourced" sausages was in fact made with tinned frankfurters or similar. Still, they are not as bad as the previous occupant who on our last visit had a USED durex hanging from a light fitting in the dining room, presumably from the fun loving clientele of the night before. He was quite prickly when I pointed it out. I predict this pub will not be open much longer.

We're a bit miffed with this pub at the moment. A few weeks ago there was a sign outside saying 20% off food. We went in and ate only to be told when we paid the bill that the meals we had had did not qualify for the offer. Two unhappy bunnies now drinking elsewhere.

The Six Bells, Reading

This is a great pub. Polly the landlady and her ladies make excellent traditional pub grub at sensible prices. Very good guinness.
