Turks Head, Alston

Popped in for a quick one. Actually just a half as I was in a hurry but I didn't need much time to realise what a great little boozer this is. Well kept beer and friendlly staff / locals. Hopefully I'll return someday soon.

The Blacksmiths Arms, Mickleton

Great little pub with good beers and friendly locals. I really felt at home here during a recent holiday.

Reverie, Edinburgh

Good no frills pub with excellent value menu.

8 May 2015 20:32

Leslies Bar, Edinburgh

A magnificent interior remarkably unspoilt but I have to agree with holbornboy about the beers. I was not inclined to have a session.

8 May 2015 20:31

Milnes Bar, Edinburgh

OK sort of place but nothing unusual.

The Abbotsford, Edinburgh

Great pub with a largely original interior and fantastic ceiling.
Some very interesting beers all well kept.
My favourite stop in Edinburgh.

The Bulls Head, Poynton

Having passed by too many times whilst on the way to the airport, I decided to put some time aside and pay a visit to what turned out to be be one of the best unspoiled, proper pubs in the area.

There was a warm welcome from the landlord and locals, four great real ales, and the traditional decor made for a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere, and BTW it's a free house. If the landlord is reading this then please don't change a thing.

Downside? - I live 25 miles away!

The Old Mother Red Cap, Bradway

Great family pub and great value Samuel Smiths beers. Good atmosphere and friendly staff.

The Anglers Rest, Bamford

Well what a change of fortune. I thought this old pub was going the way of the Dodo until thankfully a group of enterprising locals rescued it from (I think) the dead hand of Admiral Taverns who must be one of the most destructive pubco's in the country. A group of us visited last Sunday after a walk for a terrific value carvery followed by an extended session and somehow staggered back down the hill to the station and home. The beers were well kept with Black Sheep as a regular and three other rotating guest ales. Talking to the folks at our table, apparently there has been some local opposition to the community buyout - why? Things have improved immeasurably and I for one give everyone involved a round of applause. This once gloomy dive is now a real asset to Hope Valley's once dwindling collection of real ale pubs.

Crown Inn, Totley

It's OK and clean and comfortable, but sadly not a drinkers' pub with the emphasis firmly on food. Friendly though and worth it for a quick one.

The Anglers Rest, Millers Dale

A very nice unspoiled pub with a good range of locally brewed beers. I did not try the food as it was a flying visit but I will definitely return soon. The staff were friendly and the place was clean - no doubt helped by the dirty boot ban. Fine by me.

The Queen Anne Inn, Great Hucklow

Great beers from Brampton brewery in nearby Chesterfield.
Good friendly service from attentive landlord.
Warm atmosphere and comfortable surroundings.

But - food below average and way overpriced. I'm certainly no chef, but on this occasion I really do think I could do better myself especially as It says on the menu that "all food is cooked to order so expect a wait."

The Cheshire Cheese Inn, Hope

Thanks intothevalley for your response.

It seems my comment struck it's intended mark thereby confirming its veracity!

It's very difficult to feel inferior when in the company of the likes of you, and if you were as sharp as you think you are, then you would have derived from my comment that I too live in the Hope Valley, probably for just as long as yourself. Great stuff and thanks for the laughs!

The Princess Louise, Holborn

Terrific old pub. I quite like SS beer and my only complaint is that I live 20 miles away.

The George Hotel, Tideswell

Went in on Sunday lunchtime to a very empty pub - should have been packed. Four Greene King ales - Golden Ale well kept. Virtually no snacks (nuts, crisps etc - very poor) friendly but gormless staff could not compensate for dead atmosphere in this once great old boozer. Cold, ill conceived decor, cheap characterless furniture - the tables in our vicinity seemed to have been recently stripped and were still tacky. No pressing desire to return.

I believe scientists and philosophers (not to mention discriminating drinkers) call this the "Greene King Effect".

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, Castleton

Not bad for a tourist trap pub. Four beers all well kept. A bit too food orientated though. Friendly staff, but I won't make a habit of it.

23 Aug 2009 20:34

The Peaks Inn, Castleton

I was enticed into this pub by the Cask Marque sign - usually a good bet - but not this time. The only REAL beer on the pumps was Black Sheep but this was off. Plenty of keg rubbish and "cocktails" though. I didn't complain as the bar staff looked as if they had only ever drunk vodka kiddie pop mixers and so would not know a well kept beer from poison. A revamped tourist trap - avoid at all costs.

23 Aug 2009 20:26

Spa Lane Vaults, Chesterfield

There's no point JDW crowing about how cheap their Ruddles is if there's none available. Disappointing but not unexpected.

20 Aug 2009 22:42

The Hardwick Inn, Doe Lea

I'm inclined to agree with Jeannie.
It's a lovely old pub with many side rooms which could have been laid out really well but instead is crammed with as many dining tables as possible with no occaissional tables or comfortable seating (except outside tables) for drinkers.
I did not eat there and would not wish to as the huge dinner plates looked over stuffed with "sundry items" such as excessive amounts of salad and chips.
There was a good choice of beer but I was not tempted to linger as it's not a drinkers' pub.

19 Aug 2009 19:15

The Welsh Harp, Waltham Abbey

This was aregular haunt for me and my mates when I lived in the area some years ago and ai'm soory to hear about the the lack of customers which I simply can't understand as it was a terriffic little place with bags of atmosphere and good beer.

Use it or lose it . . .

13 Aug 2009 11:28

Millstone Inn, Hathersage

I used to really like this pub but things have gone downhill recently I think. Beware of "happy hour" - the drinks are the same price as usual but you are given a voucher which entitles you to 50p off your next pint if you order it when happy hour is over! - an original ploy but cheeky.

9 Aug 2009 18:13

The Anglers Rest, Bamford

Very welcoming pub with some interesting beers on when we popped in recently. The food is very good value and the staff really seem to care whether or not you enjoyed it. One of the few remaining PUBS around these parts now.

9 Aug 2009 18:04

The Yorkshire Bridge Inn, Bamford

It's the usual complaint I'm afraid - not really a pub, more of a restaurant. Some good, well kept beers though.

Unfortunately, four of us decided to pop in on a Sunday about 4pm for a drink after a walk on Win Hill and we were asked at least six times whether we wished to order a meal, which we declined each time. It was pretty obvious that diners were preferred to us mere drinkers so be warned.

9 Aug 2009 18:01

The Ladybower Inn, Bamford

It's the usual complaint I'm afraid - not really a pub, more a restaraunt. Good beers though from local brewery "Bradfields" and others from nearby districts.

8 Aug 2009 12:36

Six Bells, Cliffe

A very nice old individual pub with a warm atmosphere. Very much a locals pub but still OK. Didn't stay long as it was quiz night and that's not my cup of tea but pub/beer wise: would use again.

2 Aug 2009 19:39

The Horseshoe and Castle, Cooling

We popped into this pub last week whilst staying in the area. The welcome/atmosphere was friendly and the food was OK but nothing special. The pub itself was quite interesting and a bit quirky but above all individual - a characteristic which is fast disappearing sadly. The beer was well kept and the guest ale "Stronginthearm" was excellent. Would definitely go in again if in the area.

2 Aug 2009 19:37

The Bridge Inn, Calver

Yes it's a great little pub with good beer and a warm atmosphere. I was intrigued by the exposed stonework which turns out to be made of plastic! Does not really matter though as pros far outweigh the cons.

3 May 2009 20:05

The Wanted Inn, Sparrowpit

I can't really add much more to HARPIC's review.
This is the first time I've popped in here for years and I'll certainly try to make it more often. It' dog friendly too which adds a lot to the already informal and friendly atmosphere of the place.
Gets the newly created "Maxipopproperpubdiploma".

29 Mar 2009 19:48

The York, Sheffield

I'd hardly call this a "traditional pub" (except for the jugs instead of glasses) - the lilac coloured walls don't add anything. But it was friendly enough and the beer was good.

5 Mar 2009 19:54

Woodroffe Arms, Hope

It's open again by gad but I've not been in yet.

4 Mar 2009 18:50

The Porter Cottage, Sheffield

Good pub with plenty of cosy/private corners, good beers, friendly service but loud music even early evening when you are trying to relax but generally OK

24 Feb 2009 21:37

Porter Brook, Sheffield

Oh dear, another Greene King trying to look like a local
000!!!

24 Feb 2009 21:34

The Banner Cross Hotel, Sheffield

I have to agree 100% with Roger Pepper - and I don't even like football!

24 Feb 2009 21:33

The Fat Cat, Sheffield

Brilliant unspoilt pub with sensible prices. A good excuse for a crawl if you ever needed one.

8 Feb 2009 21:11

Strines Inn, Bradfield

Seriously in need of a refurb (but not too much!) Staff not to careful or friendly and ales limited compared to what they were a few years ago. There are plenty of better pubs around; this is not worth the detour.

16 Dec 2008 18:05

Wetherspoons, Sheffield

Wiltz is dead right. There's a big list of real ales pasted up in the window but only three or four on the pumps and one of those was off. Not what it was - more a caff that sells beer now.

16 Dec 2008 18:02

The Howard, Sheffield

How many times do you have to ask for your pint (one inch below brim) to be topped up before the penny drops? Quality and price OK (Banks) but service "couldn't care less". Presumably the cheap price is a result of savings made by short measure.

16 Dec 2008 17:54

Ye Olde Bowling Green Inn, Bradwell

Very friendly atmosphere, well kept ale and a lovely real fire go together to make what is now a very good place for a long winter session.

26 Nov 2008 19:58

The Fox House Inn, Longshaw

Yet another restaurant that thinks its a pub and not a particularly good one at that. Not my cup of tea (or anything for that matter).

25 Oct 2008 12:54

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

I know a lot of folks don't like Sam Smiths but if you do then this is as good avenue for a session as any in the area.

21 Oct 2008 16:37

The Island Queen, Islington

Lovely old pub with a great range of beers and friendly staff who are quite willing to let you taste before buying.
An example to a lot of others in the area.

21 Oct 2008 16:31

The Pub on the Park, London Fields

This could be a great pub. Instead they couldn't keep a decent beer if they tried. I've been in here few times over the last couple of years in order to meet friends when I'm down in London and every time I've had to complain about the beer. It's always been replaced by another, different pint but with a look of incomprehension, never with a smile. The locals are a strange lot too - right up themselves.

21 Oct 2008 16:29

Woodroffe Arms, Hope

Well sadly it is the last post for this once fine pub I'm afraid. I drove past a couple of days ago to find a notice outside explaining that it is now closed until further notice.
I remember not so long ago when you simply couldn't get a seat it was so full but that was long before this government started hammering the drinker with further tax increases.
Is it any surprise that so many Peak District pubs have disappeared in recent years? for instance: -
The Marquis of Granby, Bamford
Ye Derwent, Bamford
Bull's Head, Little Hucklow
The Hathersage Inn, Hathersage
Bull's Head, Wardlow
- I expect there are many more. The nearby Old Hall in Hope looks as if it might be going the same way.

21 Oct 2008 12:48

The Cheshire Cheese Inn, Hope

This is a great little pub serving good mostly local ales but it seems that the welcome / ambience does depend upon the day you choose to go there.
The review by "doncaosdelanada" is only too true regarding the locals.
I had a similar experience recently when myself and my good lady popped in for a "quiet" Sunday afternoon pint. The small bar area was dominated by a bunch of stuck up, loud mouthed geriatrics who simply would not move out of the way so that others could place an order. They all seemed to know each other (somewhat too well it transpired) and the "private party" feel was unpleasantly tangible. I stayed on for couple more nevertheless, and found it amusing that as successive members of this rude and noisy bunch left the pub, they immediately became the subject of some very interesting gossip by those that were left behind.
Who needs soaps when you've got this on your doorstep? Cheers!

19 Oct 2008 15:47

The Rising Sun, Nether Green

Why don't I live closer to this great pub? I don't remember upsetting anyone in a previous life! It's just not fair.

26 Apr 2008 21:20

Travellers Rest, Bradwell

Seriously overrated. The landlord could do with a "smile foe the customers" crash course. No big deal in the food or beer stakes either.

26 Apr 2008 21:17

The Three Stags Heads, Wardlow Mires

I`ve been going to this pub on and off for about 20 years and I never tire of its atmosphere or of the beers. the only thing that stops me goin more often is its remote location. Geoff can be a bit harsh on people but from my observations they thoroughly deserve it most of the time!

I have to comment on the demise of the Bull`s Head at Little Hucklow. This used to be a great pub but the last licensee wrecked it with his careless attitude and foul food. Once I ordered two pints of Magnet and both were an inch below measure. I asked for a top-up which was given reluctantly but only one was topped-up! - he just glared and walked away out the back when I asked for the second to be filled up. It`s a shame it`s gone but frankly it was probably for the best with landlords like that.

24 Mar 2008 21:48

White Hart, Bradwell

A very nice, comfortable and above all friendly pub that`s really improved since the new landlady took over. Could do with some other non-Greene King beers on the pumps though.
