Bar Oz, Bayswater

My first London pub in 1985 was the Moscow Arms. Went back again in 2000 & it was a Weatherspoons or something, which was OK to take my Mum to. Went back again in '03 & it was some Gastro shite, but I had to walk Moscow Road due to Tim Curry's "I Do The Rock"

The Swiss Tavern, Tacoma

I rated this an 8, but after my most recent visit, it gets a 5. Terrible to see how badly this has gone down the crapper. Filthy, reminds me of the khazi of a pub at Waterloo. Jack, what's happened???

The Swan, Bayswater

Closest pub convenient to my hotel since The Archery shut. Decent late night food, but that's about all. I'd rather get takeaway, hit an offy, & call it a night

The Cuckoo Inn, Hamptworth

Wonderful little pub I'd wanted to go to since reading of it in What's Brewing. A good pint, a good light lunch, and nice locals & landlord combined to make me want to return. The Pub With No Name, the Gales Brewery tap, The Cuckoo, and a tour at Hopback...not a bad day's work!

The Market Porter, Borough

Congratulations on the Market Porter's selection as Pub Of The Year. A good boozer isn't easy, it takes a lot of hard work, & if you're in the MP on a busy night & you really watch the staff cover the crowd, you see hard work. Just do me a favor & buy my a pint sometime!

The Ship and Bell, Horndean

I did the whole deal here. 6 years ago I'd brought my Mum & Sis to the UK for their 1st time, & the Ship & Bell was teir 1st experience with English food & hosptality. I had my first ever HSB in the public bar, which was just OK, but it is much nicer now. Our family room was bright, airy, & clean, and breakfast was great, but unfortunately we missed dinner, & we went to the horrible, hideous, terrible, totally sucking Brewers Fayre across the road. I returned this fall, and had my first ever draught Festival Mild, which was/is fabulous, standing at the lobby bar. I got to Salisbury that night, and logged onto the CAMRA website, and there was the unfortunate news that Fullers were trying to buy Gales. As an ex-Fullers rep, I hope Fullers let Gales, & The Ship & Bell alone. They are both classic.

The Salamander, Bath

Very reminiscent of every brewpub on in the Western USA, an American style Yuppie place. But the Bath Ales are decent, the service was good, & though I didn't want to like it, I can't run it down

The Star Inn, Bath

Fabulous interior. Damn good selection of ales. I loved watching the intense competition at Shove Ha'penny. How the hell I never made it here in 10 previous trips to Bath over 20 years, I don't know. I had a car this time & after a stop at the Two Pigs in Corsham, I looked up as I was enetering Bath, and said "Hey! The Star Inn, and a parking place right in front." Next time I know I'll be making The Star Inn a must when in Bath

Ye Olde Starre Inn, York

Well worth the walk from the Station along the city wall. Food was good, decent ales, service was good

City Arms, Wells

I finally went to the City Arms at the height of lunchtime on a Saturday. Not the best time choice, but the service was fine the ales good, and the food great. The place was full of single types & 2-tops, and I asked to share a table for 6 with a couple, and we asked two ladies to share with us 4, and lunch lasted far longer than we expected. Us 2 Yanks, 2 folks from Dorchester, and 2 locals. Strangers at the start, we had a great lunch & conversation. Hopefully this is what the City Arms is usually like

The Who'd A Thought It, Glastonbury

Tough to find, I did B & B at the Who'd A Thought It? and was overjoyed. Really decent 6X, great food, clean rooms, and I can see why the men's toilet is "prize winning", although the wallpaper was overpowering. If you want to stay in Glastonbury, but be off the High Street, the "Hooda" is a reasonably priced choice

The Riflemans Arms, Glastonbury

The Rifleman's is nothing fancy, and has an overpowering bouquet of disinfectant, but when your quads & knees are shrieking after a jog up the Tor, The Rifleman's is well worth a stop. Decent ale, and what would a local be in Somerset without good cider?

The White Horse Inn, Priors Dean

Since I bought "Classic Country Pubs" 20 years ago I've wanted to go to this pub, and without GPS I found it! Beautiful place, worth the search, great beer selection(too bad I was driving), nice people. Too bad I was there before they opened on their Bonfire Day, but the staff couldn't have been nicer, and though I couldn't make it back that day, I will be back, and not just for a short stop.

The Archery Tavern, Bayswater

Here's the gen about The Archery. Church Charities owns the building, and Hall & Woodhouse, whose lease expired 31 Dec, chose not to renew due to an increase in the costs. Fullers, Youngs, and other brewers & pub companies are talking with Church Charities about re-opening The Archery

The Ashburnham Arms, Greenwich

I finally found the Ashburnham Arms after a number of misses, and expected your basic "back street boozer". It ain't. The bar area is light & airy, the Shepherd Neame ales were in good shape, and the food was good and reasonably priced. I appreciated the stack of newspapers & magazines for when you want to kick back & read. I'm certain this place gets packed with yuppies, but I doubt the regular crowd are high street types: you have to really want to find this place, and if you want good ale and good food, it's not a bad choice.

The Royal Oak, Borough

This is a damn fine pub. How the heck I'd not gone before I'll never know, but I'm very glad I did. Since it was Bonfire Night it was a little quiet, which made for a much better chance for conversations, both in the public bar, and in the lounge. The Harveys' ales I had were in fine nick, and Frank, the landlord, couldn't have been nicer. Maybe the stars just aligned perfickly on Bonfire Night '05!

The Cat Tavern, Salisbury

This is a funny little place. Good ales, dangerous cider, and some damn fine local music talent. Close to station, and a worthy stop on a crawl through Salisbury, or just down Fisherton Street.

11 Apr 2005 09:36

The Morden Arms, Greenwich

Really decent place & folks. It doesn't look like it is open...but it is. I'd popped in a few times just to use the head, & finally stopped to top up, & they barman & regulars were really nice. Not much happening, but if you need to rehydrate between Royal Hill & the station, this is the place.

Wellesley, Waterloo

Indifferent service, indifferent ale. Inadequate cleaning(loved the chundah on the stairs). If it wasn't so close to the trains I'd give it no stars, but since it's convenient, I'll give it a "1" Is this representative of all Coopers?

King's Arms, Greenwich

Convenient location when dying of thirst trekking from town center to observatory. Beers were nothing special, nor was the service

21 Aug 2003 09:59

Richard I, Greenwich

I've only been here once, on a beautiful spring afternoon. The Young's was delicious, and the garden was perfect for kicking back, talking, and I had no problem with the staff, as they totally ignored the garden, so I could get my excercise stumbling back & forth to the bar. Not being from the area, the whole street was a nice surprise.

21 Aug 2003 09:54

The Spanish Galleon, Greenwich

Pretty decent place. The food we've had has been good, and the Spitfire has been in good shape.
It does get a bit busy at lunch and on weekends, and the staff can get overwhelmed & make mistakes on orders.

21 Aug 2003 09:48

The Rat and Parrot, Bath

The beer was terrible. The food was worse, yet, but the service was adequate. That's just the high points. I'd never been to a Rat & Parrot, but if this is any indication, never again. The good news is that the food kept me from getting a hangover, since I had no desire to drink anything more.

28 Jul 2003 13:23

The Railway, Salisbury

The Railway is nothing fancy, just a good old boozer that the owners take pride in. The bedroom we stayed in was clean, and breakfast was just fine. The Railway is convenient walking distance to the town centre of Salisbury, and is about 150 feet to your left as you walk out of the train station, which is very convenient when you have to catch a train out the morning after too many pints of Hopback.

The Haunch of Venison, Salisbury

While trying to avoid a football crowd on a Sunday afternoon, we luckily walked into The Haunch. The 6X flowed like water, and although the upper floors were closed our bartendress showed us around(but didn't point out the Hand, darn it!), and best of all, we became involved in conversations with the other people in the bar. No music, no TV, no crap, and as soon as we left, we wanted to go back.
