The Anchor Inn (Hungry Horse), Hitchin

It's currently closed but has a sign outside saying that it's under new management and will be re-opening soon.

Let's hope they clean it up and turn it into a great local.

The Friary, Lancaster

Went in there on Saturday night and it appears to have been taken over by what looks like teenagers. 3 rows deep at the bar so didn't stay for a beer.

The Blue Anchor, Lancaster

Recently been completely renovated and is now called '1725' - more of a restaurant now than a pub but much better than it was.

The Guildford Tup, Guildford

Good Thai food, San Miguel on tap. Friendly staff and a good size beer garden for when it's not hoofing it down. Oi loikes it.

Three Horseshoes, Willian

Really good Abbot ale and although we didn't eat, the food coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled very nice.

Not really a good place to go if you like real ale/continental lagers - this pub has more of the usual beers like Carling etc.

Staff were friendly enough but the customers were a bit foul-mouthed.

It looks like they may have had a drug-dealing problem as there are posters up warning that dealers will be prosecuted (although there was no sign of it going on whilst we were there).

Seems like the landlord/lady are trying to make an effort with the pub though so good on them.

Millstream, Hitchin

Expensive, generic, lacking in atmosphere, shame really as it's in a great location

The Kings Arms, Hitchin

Great selection of ales and lagers, friendly atmosphere too.

The Radcliffe Arms, Hitchin

Update - it's been sold to a developer with a clause that it never re-opens as a pub.

Pitcher and Piano, Hitchin

This bar is within the corn exchange and I went there with a friend in February. It is part of a chain.

We queued at the bar for 10 minutes even though it didn't seem busy, and once we sat down there were several customers who had ordered food complaining to the manager and receiving refunds.

Not sure if they have ironed out those problems yet but we haven't been back to find out...

The Victoria, Hitchin

I popped in there this weekend with family based on recommendations from friends and I wasn't disappointed. The real ale was very good, the atmosphere friendly and the prices reasonable too.

Recommended.

Ivory, Hitchin

Hmmm 5 reviews from an anonymous reviewer all made within a 30 minute period. Staff perhaps?

The Royal Oak, Pencelli

I go to Pencelli Castle every year and the Royal Oak every night I'm there. The landlord (Trevor I think) is very friendly as another person has mentioned. Always good for a bit of friendly English v Welsh banter! It's great for all ages and families too. The garden is a stepped grassed terrace which goes up to the canal and is great in summer.

The food is excellent and the cask ale, Reverend James, is superb. I suppose the only thing you could wish for are cushions on the chairs (does that mean I spend too much time there?!)

All in all, a great pub.

The Bumble Bee, Flitwick

This is a good pub for watching sports and has a late licence at weekends but unfortunately it seems to attract mostly chavs and troublemakers (maybe by the massive St. Georges Cross that was draped over its roof during the World Cup?). I'm not just generalising, the last 2 times I have been in there fights have broken out.

Standard beers (Fosters etc) and sticky tables/chairs everywhere.

Try the Swan (lounge side) or the Blackbirds instead.

The Cowper Arms, Digswell

I went for lunch there today with a friend and I have to say that I was very disappointed. The location, atmosphere and beer garden are very nice but unfortunately the food and waiting staff were below par.

I ordered a Hereford Beef Burger (7) and my friend ordered a Chicken and Bacon Flatbread (5). The Chicken and Bacon Flatbread wasn't bad but was smothered in a huge dollop of mayo. The Beef Burger when it arrived had about 5 chunky chips with it and the burger was pink and sloppy in the middle so I went to a waitress and told her. She responded with 'Oh, OK' and walked straight off into the kitchen. I was brought another burger (but with same bacon and cheese on it) and again, this wasn't cooked properly. I put my plate on the bar and said I wanted my money back, which was done apologetically by the chap behind the bar. What is the point in employing a chef who can't even cook a burger?

In summary -

Poor waitress customer service, poor food quality and wasp problems if you sit in the beer garden.

Good location and air-con inside, nice bar staff and good beer selection.
