The Riverside Inn, Tuckton

went there last night and had the worst meal I can recall! (1) Specklen Hen served at near freezing (it ain't lager!), (2) starter taken away before we'd finished, (3) lamb steak was dry, tough and inedible, (4) tea and coffee served one cup short and then the cup provided was dirty. Shocking. Table staff were pleasant though, although the 'supervisor' was miserable and smelt of stale fags when she can to see what was wrong with my meal (and then pointlessly prodded the lamb steak as if to try to disprove my theory)...

aaaargh - sticky carpet, smelly toilet, average food prepared badly. OK, so it's cheap, but then so is Threshers and sitting on a bench in the Memorial Gardens. Which at least don't smell! Snakebite? Probably the only way to get you through a night here. Needs strong beer goggles to see anything appealing about it...

The Daylight Inn, Petts Wood

'A pub of two halves' - one with large screens for footy, pool table and a younger customer base. The other more comfy, soft lighting and quieter. I prefer the latter (being a 40-something old git). But the two mix well enough. Decent beer. Reasonable food. 'Lively' Friday/Saturday nights. Beats getting beaten-up in Bromley...

The Somerford Hotel, Christchurch

called in as desperate for food and lacking incentive to go further afield - and I was very impressed. Excellent food at a good price, friendly service. Recommended!

in a word, 'don't' - wander round to the Haven, the Nelson, Ship in Distress - anywhere that values its customers. Agree with last post - food is when it suits, and don't assume because you've been served they won't try to hassle you to finish.

The Galleon, Highcliffe

bit poncey and over-priced reasonable food - there are better pubs locally (3 tuns in Bransgore is far better 'gastro pub') but then in Highcliffe there are also far worse!

The Nelson, Mudeford

sorry - meant to add the Ringwood ales are great and very well looked after and the bar staff are friendly too!

The Nelson, Mudeford

undergoing substantion refurbishment and building to the rear in the car park. now has decet thai menu alongside a few traditional english favourites. had its first coat of paint since i can remember (30 odd years!) and no longer the nicotine-stained yellow of old. Even un-blocked the air vents so you can breath! On the up?

The Elm Tree Inn, Hightown

Agree with last post - this IS a place for families and our 5 year old loved her meal. As did the 4 'adults'. Three happy generations! But then I avoid Brewers Fayre and the like if at all possible and prefer something more individual - though at times a play area where little ones can run off steam is welcome!

The Spyglass and Kettle, Southbourne

An 'honest' pub serving reasonable food, good access (wheelchair-friendly) and relatively child friendly too. Which in Bournemouth is a rare combination. Sure it's not a perfect pub, but its family orientation serves a purpose. And the food is good value. Better than the usual chain food/pub outlets
