The Battle of Trafalgar, Brighton

Being about a minute from the station this is a brilliant pub for meeting people if you are arriving by train. I never want to go anywhere else really, no point. Harveys is very good, bar always busy, at 5PM it fills up and there is a real buzz to the place. Lots of friendly people, does not attract the wine bar set.

The Shepherd and Dog, Fulking

Most people from within a 10 mile radius and in their 50's will have happy memories of this pub. In its day, which was the mid 80's, a truly lovely pub. Everyone who has ever had too much to drink would have ended up in the stream. Used to get busloads of boozers here at one time, bit quieter now, where isn't. Sad to hear some of the employees have had bad experiences here. It's a beautiful setting for a nice pub.

The Woolpack, Burgess Hill

Last here a week ago on a rare sunny lunchtime. Several bitters, but I can never resist Strongbow if the sun is out. Large pub, never seen it full, but I only get here during the week. They are trying to do their best.

The Sportsman, Goddard Green

Came here for lunch with a large group, about 25 of us, three weeks ago on a cold Wednesday. All the staff are very young, but there was one who was excellent, loud voice, but made sure everyone got what they wanted and what they'd ordered. We'd only given notice of our arrival about 2 hours beforehand, so they did well to please us. Beer - several bitters, Peroni. It's best in the summer, like most country pubs. I thought it an improvement on when I was last there.

The Hassocks Hotel, Hassocks

Only ever pop in for an emergency pint when too early for a train. Not the UK's friendliest pub, but aimed at younger drinkers, they probably love it. Lots of screens but I wouldn't watch football here.

The Greyhound, Keymer

Nice pub, good for a lunchtime drink. Completely unpretentious unlike the whole of Ditchling just down the road. Often pop in but never stayed to see a night out, probably rather pleasant. Make a good local.

The Wheatsheaf, Woodmancote

One of the first pubs I got drunk in as a kid. In its day, on a Friday night, was one of the best pubs in the area as it was full of Henfield drinkers. Missing it, I went the other day in middle age hoping to recapture something and failed. Not a pub, not really a restaurant either, but they are trying, and I have a soft spot for it. Harveys is an improvement over the Watneys they used to serve in the early 80's.

Grand Central, Brighton

went in yesterday afternoon for a drink at 2.30, didn't leave until 7, excellent ESB at perfect temperature, friendly bar staff, got busy later on. If there had been no one in there still worth it for the ESB. There wasn't time to try the Pride.

The Caxton Arms, Brighton

Fond memories of this pub and drunken lunchtimes over 20 years ago. Went back recently, wished I hadn't. Used to get a good crowd in, train drivers, postmen.

The Royal Oak, Wineham

Up until fairly recently was the last unspoilt pub in the South East. Always was popular with the Porsche Turbo type, but beer was kept in wood out the back, and was good. They never did food which kept the Porsche Turbo crowd healthily low. But, things always change, and they now do food, and the clientelle has changed. It's still worth going to, the ale is good and local, Bedlam. It is surrounded by some of the best countryside of the weald, if you like walking.

The Waterside, Cowes

Visited Cowes at the weekend for the first time since 1981 as an 18 year old. The Harbour Lights, as it was called then, was the best pub for an 18 year old to go to. Not much else in Cowes has changed, but this place now looks awful. I would expect it to close pretty soon, there was no one in it. Tragic waste of a decent location. I believe all these reviews too.

The New Inn, Hurstpierpoint

It's been taken over again (goodbye *om). Sofas have gone to be replaced by less comfortable furniture. Range of beer fits style of pub. On a summers day the garden is lovely. The new owner is well known in area and bound to be more popular than previous one. Food still pricey but it is good.

The Vinyard Lodge, Hurstpierpoint

NEWS! It's been taken over by the chef who used to work there, and he's done it up all by himself since August, and it looks much, much better. Even better he is out pricing the New Inn and hopefully will put such a dent in their trade that they will have to review their prices. New name for the Vinyard lodge is tHurst..good innit?

The Vinyard Lodge, Hurstpierpoint

August 2012 - Closed down looks like it's being refurbished. There is something fundamentally wrong with this place, it should be able to succeed, good location (closest premises to large car park), good garden, village full of alcoholics. But, no one seems to be ble to make it work. The last lot had no clue how to run a licensed premises.

The New Inn, Hurstpierpoint

Went back yesterday for the first time since my last review and it's still the same. It's in the wrong place and quite frankly taints the places it surrounds, attracts the worst sort of person, and belongs in Brighton about 5 years ago.

The Fountain, Ashurst

The pub I first over did it in on the cider. Rode back on to Partridge Green on my AP50, had to go back the next day to pick my crash helmet up. Those were the days. It is splendid in the summer, and must be good to have survived. There aren't enough locals to keep it going, so for a pub in the middle of nowhere you can only drive to, they must be doing something right.

The Vinyard Lodge, Hurstpierpoint

Under new management - again..... Now rebranding as an American diner retaining the name of the previous Tex Mex - The Three Amigos. This place has lots of potential, nice garden, very friendly staff and locals, no crisps though. Cheapest thing to eat is Nachos - or it was about a month ago - 5. That's no good is it? Needs decent bitter, move the bar so there is more seating at the wider part of the building, and attract drinkers not eaters. Good luck to the new owners...Harveys should do it....

The Noahs Ark Inn, Lurgashall

This used to be the best pub in the area, glad it is still going and people like it.
To the 'hatter' commenter - maybe it's you, everyone else likes it.

The Lickfold Inn, Petworth

Ued to be owned by Laurie Tyler and was a good night out in the 80's. Sad it's gone, but not surprised. Maybe the last owner isn't as clever as he thinks he is.

26 Mar 2011 17:52

The Woolpack, Burgess Hill

Big, grim, empty, nasty. It's in the wrong place. Feels like a Wetherspoons, sad, can't be easy to keep it open with those costs.

25 Mar 2010 21:36

The Royal Oak, Wineham

Perhaps the last unspoilt pub in the whole of the South of England. That fellah that owns all the Ditchling pubs must be hanging around to buy it, lets hope it never happens. Sort of place that any American would relocate for really, you have to visit to believe it.

25 Mar 2010 21:29

The Sportsman, Goddard Green

Twice when I've visited there has been something wrong with the chimney and smoke has filled the place. Hard to get served if you just want beer, they want you to eat too. Busy place at weekends. Is much needed in the area.

25 Mar 2010 21:25

The Red Lion Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Very busy at lunchtimes with staff from a nearby clothing factory I think, so lots of chat accross the pub. Sarnies are OK, didn't try anything hot. Beer good I thought. Cosy, handy for the airshow.

25 Mar 2010 21:22

Marliplins, Shoreham by Sea

Friendly, feels like an old Brighton pub. Good beer, friendly staff, cosy.

25 Mar 2010 21:18

The Green Jackets, Shoreham by Sea

Expensive, totally devoid of atmosphere in the public bar. Could be much much better.

25 Mar 2010 21:14

The Poacher, Hurstpierpoint

Really good pub. Very good to watch football in but don't get upset if your drink gets spilled, you'll be laughing too much anyway from the banter. Lively, friendly, no rip offs anywhere. Some very well qualified football viewers too in the shape of ex football player/managers.

The Crown and Anchor, Shoreham by Sea

Garden is lovely in the summer by the river. Food is expensive, beer range is dreadful. Big pub, but effectively a restaurant sadly.

The New Inn, Hurstpierpoint

They've taken the Leffe off. Only thing that was worth going in for. Decor is nice but looks like a Brighton trendy pub. Good atmosphere most nights, if you have to go go early Friday night.

The Live and Let Live, Guildford

Sure this used to be an Irish pub when I was at Tech not far away. They used to serve me when I looked 15 and no other pub did. Except the Stoke of course. I'd love to see it again for old times sakes. The people who are slagging it off - use it or lose it.

The Buckingham Arms, Shoreham by Sea

Easily the best pub in Shoreham. Might not be the flashiest, but you can spend all day in here and feel amongst friends without knowing anyone. Brilliant beer, I've always found the bar staff excellent, grub's OK. It is always popular, nice garden out the back on summers days. Give it a try, it's worth it. The Sussex is excellent.
