The Strawbury Duck, Entwistle

After three more visits...I refer to my previous review from Nov 2010, whilst the food is lovely (I rate it at the best pub food in this area) and the real ale is excellent too, I'm afraid the service still continues to let the pub down. On two of the occasions when the pub was relatively quiet the food took an excessive amount of time to arrive (Note: I'm quite prepared to wait for freshly cooked food) and specific requests were not followed.
There seems to be a lack of communication between the young serving staff and the kitchen. I'm sure if the management read this they can review and sort it out, as it's a shame when the food quality is excellent.

The White Horse, Pulverbatch

Apologies for the late review. My wife and I visited numerous times in 2008 while staying on holiday for one week. The beer was excellent, locals, landlady and staff friendly and the food excellent (beyond my expectation). We were very impressed, hope the White Horse has managed to keep up the good work!

Fountain Inn, Oldwood St Michaels

Bland food, bland decor.
Beer good and friendly staff.

The Little Pack Horse, Bewdley

Visited with full troupe of wife, small child and dog.
Received and warm and genuine welcome from the landlord.
The interior is interesting
Food good - especially the desperate dan pie, all home made.
Beer from Bewdley Brewery top drawer - just round the corner where you can purchase by the bottle.
A good 8!

The Strawbury Duck, Entwistle

Visited the pub early this evening for a quick midweek tea with the Missus and toddler.
Beer and food excellent.
Service poor, not willfully bad just disinterested and ill trained, poor.

The Woodman Inn, Bridport

Nice to find a non-Palmers pub in this area. Beer was good and welcome friendly, only stayed for a pint, but would return.
Skittle alley and beer garden as previously mentioned in other reviews.

The Digby Tap, Sherborne

Impressed, good beer, good quality basic low cost food, especially for this upmarket area. Atmosphere good, nice mix of customers. Well worth a visit.

The Loders Arms, Loders

We stayed in Loders recently, the pub was taken over in May 2009. It's Palmer, the beer was very well kept, although I'm not a big fan of Palmers I will concede that it was good.
Pub is spotloess, nicely decorated and very focused on food. It was popular, especially on Friday and Sunday when we ate there.
Service was excellent, friendly and efficient, I was impressed. Our dog was welcomed with biscuits.
Food home cooked and excellent, although (like many pubs in the area) a little expensive.
Would recommend it.

Marquis of Lorne, Nettlecombe

We stayed near Bridport on holiday, this nice pub is a a little hard to find but we enjoyed the genuinely friendly welcome from landlord (chef) and landlady and atmosphere. Palmers beer well kept, although I'm not a fan of Palmers in general. Home cooked food was lovely. Food prices in the this area are high, but in this instance we thought the food justified the price.

The Falcon, Chester

Found it quite friendly. Sam Smiths is not to my taste but it was pretty well kept and very, very cheap.
Worth a quick pint in!

The Albion Inn, Chester

Popped in for a quick pint, the atmosphere didn't do much for me! Staff were reasonably friendly, beer was well kept, although selection was not inspiring. Didn't try the food, although the menu looked interesting. Will have to go again to make my mind up properly!

The Brewery Tap, Chester

Top class, first visit. Enjoyed the atmosphere, the (mainly female) staff and landlady were very nice. Great interesting beer selection, all brilliantly kept. Food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Would recommend to all.

The Bear and Billet, Chester

Visited on a Sunday night when the quiz was on. Excellent beer and beer selection, nice atmosphere, overall very good. Looks like it's been done up recently. Brewery Tap just up the road, Albion around the corner.

The Royal Oak Inn, Gillamoor

We too were confronted by the strange dog policy, as mentioned in the review below, we visited regardless. It's a pub serving good pubby food at a reasonable price, certainly more focussed on dining than drinkers. Most of the pub is given over to dining with only a small drinking area. Black Sheep on tap, I tried the 'Golden Sheep' only for it to be undrinkable, it was exchanged with the minimum of fuss. Overall: Decent pub food, not one for the drinkers. Rating: 6.

The Hare Inn, Scawton

A very foody pub, with well kept good Black Sheep. We went to eat on the 'early bird' menu and were blown away with the quality of the food, it was truly excellent. Service was also good and atmophere/decor nice. It's get's an 8 from me for the super food, however if I was judging as a drinker alone then it would proably get a lower mark as only a small area for drinkers.

Bar Fringe, Manchester

Visited many times over the past few years, always enjoyable, good selction of beer well kept. Good dukebox and a mix of clientle which gives it special buzz. Have never had a problem with the staff or service.

Odd Bar, Manchester

Visited many times, nice bar with quircky atmosphere and good mix of clientle. One real ale normally from a local micro and normally excellent. Other world beers also avaialble including some fruit beer. Food is also good and reasonable. Does get busy at weekend, music (DJ) normally starts around 7.00pm and there will be a (normally friendly) bouncer at weekends.

The King William Hotel, Bromley Cross

Recent Thwaites conversion. A little soulless in decor for my taste and certainly focussed on dining with many tables and a small bar area. Positives: Thwaites real ale, service and reasonably priced food are all good. Nice outdoor deck with tables to enjoy the warm Edgworth weather! Overall: good, give it a try.

The Bay Mare, Bolton

Used this pub a little in the past and popped in on a Friday evening for drinks before a curry, and susequently afterwards. Bank Top Flat Cap on Draught, friendly staff and locals. Would describe as a friendly, local, backstreet type pub, even though it's on a main road!

The Kings Head (Low House), Laxfield

Belated review from a visit in Sep 08.
Great pub, agree with comment below regarding atmosphere, beer quality and good basic food. Service was lovely and you cannot say that much in this age of no service!

The Rain Bar, Castlefield

Agree with Rob, prices are good for MCR centre, If you can stomach JW Lee's beer! We visited on a Friday night after a gig, good atmosphere, mixed friendly crowd and nice canalside location. Not bad at all.

28 Apr 2009 11:23

White Horse Inn, Clun

As out of towners visting the area we stayed at the pub, good basic inexpensive rooms. Nice atmosphere, friendly locals, very nice selection of beer from intersting variety of locals and further afield, all very well kept. Food very average, although breakfast was excellent.

The Sweet Green Tavern, Bolton

Further to my previous rating...sorry to say that while still a nice boozer the beer quality in the Sweet Green is variable. For around the last three times I have visited a pint change has been required, believe me I'm not a 'complainer' but do insist on taking beer back if it's not good. Last time I visited the first two pints I tried were off! They are always exchanged graciously, but that is not the point, many people are not comfortable complaining about beer quality. In my humble opinion this pubs should focus less on the number of ales on tap and more on keeping them flowing well and in good condistion. Let's hope things improve.

28 Apr 2009 11:14

The Howcroft Inn, Bolton

Been an excellent pub in a run down area for a long time. We've had parties and a wake there in the past. Beer is (always) great and I find the staff (and locals)friendly and pleasant with genuine character!
However...it is a little run down, and certainly the upholstery in the little snug opposite the bar is dirty (my wife was not impressed) and needs a spruce up!
Must admit have not visited in the last month to comment on any management changes. Pubs like this need our support to survive!! Overall 7.

The Sweet Green Tavern, Bolton

Nice traditional pub, convenient for the station, warm and friendly welcome from both landlord and punters. Good mix of clientle, coal fire in winter, pool room, plenty of seating in five separate areas. Busy on match days with Bolton supporters before they catch the train to the Reebok. The beer is GREAT, normally a large selection (10+)of locals from Banktop (Bolton) and Hopstar (Darwen) plus other interesting specials from micro's around the country. Overall great pub with a real Bolton atmosphere.

17 Apr 2008 11:39

The Lord Raglan, Nangreaves

Popped in for a quick pint late on a Sunday afternoon, nice and well kept beer from their own brewery, friendly staff and locals at bar. Olde Worlde decor, would go again.

17 Apr 2008 11:27

The White Horse, Turton

Decent pub, well kept, nicely decorated (in bar) and clean. Real ale is usually good, Bank Top (Bolton)and Moorhouses (Pendle)are normally on with a couple of others.
Food is average at best and the(female) bar staff are less than friendly (not just a man thing, my wife would 2nd that comment), hence the 6 out of 10!!

17 Apr 2008 10:55

The Navigation Inn, Lapworth

We went for a evening meal (party of 10), and went in blind as we had not visited previously. The decor is nice (Bar old fashioned, Dining room more modern), real ale was reasonable: Holdens was pretty good, Timothy Taylors was not. The menu looks uninspiring, with quite a few main course and very few(one)starters, but actually the food was pretty good, hearty fare.
My issue was with the food service, pretty much order at the bar (even for a table of 10) and get left to your own devices, food was a little slow (which is acceptable), no one came to check we were OK, to offer more drinks, etc. Same old problem, young (but friendly) untrained staff running the place, could do with a little care and attention on the service, so I would not recommend friends to go there. Overall: Average pub in a nice canal side setting.
