THQ, Clerkenwell

An amazing little wine bar, in the middle of Grays Inn Road.

No draught beers, but a decent wine list and bottled beers sold. Prices miles cheaper, for wine, than nearby pubs.

Food is the key selling point, its incredible. served by really friendly staff.

One of Grays Inn Road's best kept secrets that deserves to succeed, its a small business, that I am very impressed with so will be supporting

The Lucas Arms, Kings Cross

Great atmosphere, good food and drinks selection. Well worth a pint

The Tottenham, Soho

Great decor inside, friendly staff, typical Nicolsons selection of drinks, slightly overpriced, location I guess, full of tourists. Better than I expected. Food typical fare.

The Shakespeare's Head, Islington

Friendly staff and local, great food, understand the 70's comments, but thats part of the charm. A bit off the beaten track, behind Sadlers Wells theatre, but well worth visiting.

The Angel, Angel, Islington

Pretty rough and basic, but thats its charm.

The Penderel's Oak, Holborn

One of the better Wetherspoons in the area, friendly staff, usually pretty busy.

The Sunnyhill, Whitehaven

Just changed hands, owned by the people who own The Whittington Cat in the town. Food great, simple home cooked fare, consequently is pretty full all the time, which is a problem at the bar, which often appears understaffed. Has also been refurbished, and looks a million times better.

Captain Senney's, Whitehaven

Awful atmosphere, and full of drunks. One of the towns few late night drinking venues and it shows. That being said good selection of drinks, helps if you've had a few when you go in.

The Candlestick, Whitehaven

Good atmosphere, great drinks selection, one of the towns pub highlights.

John Paul Jones, Whitehaven

Indifferent staff, the venue is under threat of demolition, and it shows. Shame used to be great, now its pretty soul-less. Beers not great

Blue Bar and Restaurant, Whitehaven

Great atmosphere and music with a good wine list.

The Shipwrights Arms, Whitehaven

Pretty unpleasant and patronising bar manager. No atmosphere, not particularly welcoming. OK selction of drinks, at regular prices. Nothing particularly to recommend it.

Bransty Arch, Whitehaven

Unfriendly staff, who threatened to ban 2 seemingly respectable customers while I was watching, for complaining about the temperature of the beer, after telling them to drink somewhere else if they didn't like it - seemed very excessive. Seemed to take ages to get served.
They'd ran out of wine glasses so served it in a half pint glass, also refused to serve a bottle of wine after 10.00 incase the four of us hadn't finished by the time they closed.
Food tepid, typical Wetherspoons offering.
One to avoid.

The Friend at Hand, Bloomsbury

Its very very dark inside. That aside, good food menu, with various offers available, concentrating on a 'Great British' menu. Good selction of drinks. The female staff member that served us was really polite and friendly. Had the same problem with one of the staff on another visit, the manager made her apologise! Definitely needs lights.

The Yorkshire Grey , Holborn

Friendly, sometimes too friendly staff, good service, and good selection of drinks, that are slightly more expensive than neighbouring pubs, also found the house wines a bit ropey. Great atmosphere - have been drinking here for 6 years, and it has really benefitted from the last change of owners.
Food menu is great, when they say the platters serve at least 4, they mean it ! - quality of meals is excellent, service times good, and prices competitive.
Avoid Friday nights when it is packed, and queues deep at the bar. Would recommend at other times, do a great Saturday brunch.

The Calthorpe Arms, Holborn

Nicely laid out traditional pub. Found staff pretty indifferent, but owners friendly. Seems very much a locals pub, busy at lunchtimes as food is pretty cheap (around 5 per meal). Not Egon Ronay, but doesn't pretend to be. Pretty basic, which I don't mean as an insult, good selection of drinks, similar prices to nearby pubs.

Blue Lion, Holborn

Since it changed hands, this pub has been completely transformed. Friendly warm atmosphere, welcoming owner, great selection of drinks, and a well thought out menu, with good quality ingredients. Now one of the area's highlights. Can be manic on a Friday night, but service doesn't slip. Closed at weekends which is a shame, as there's a lack of good Sunday lunch pubs in the area.

The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell

Great place for a relaxed Sunday lunch. Its the type of place you would walk past if you weren't into sport - big mistake. Friendly staff, cheapest drink in the area at the moment, good quality reasonably priced food. Very impressed

The Apple Tree, Clerkenwell

Had a leaving party here, totally spoiled by the patronising attitude of the staff, inedible food, and couldn't care less attitude of the manager. Wish I'd visited one of the other better pubs in the area. Will be avoiding in the future.
