Lord's Tavern, St John's Wood

OK, BITE, you can chuck all of the 2004 reviews out of the window.

While the decor didn't exactly give me a sense of the history or cricketing significance of the place, the beer selection was small in quantity but high quality, and the food was out of this world. Prices aren't cheap, but much less than you'd expect, given its location, and very reasonable compared with its local competition.

We went there on a County Championship day which meant that we were probably the only non-cricket players/spectators/pundits in the house, but we felt out of place probably for a maximum of about 30 seconds, until I went up to the bar and was put at my ease by the very friendly and helpful staff. I'll definitely be back.

The burgers, by the way, were top notch.

The Compass, Islington

Looked very very closed when I went past last weekend.

The Pembroke Castle, Primrose Hill

used to come here regularly in summers gone by, and it was a very pleasant place. not perfect, but not bad. went back there recently however and the new management have made a lot of changes which have made it a place to avoid. the tv in the corner now shows a computer generated aquarium instead of sports. now if that's not a huge waste of electricity i don't know what is. the main problem is the totally unwarranted rudeness dished out by the manager on a routine basis to the customers. it's a shame because the rest of the staff are very pleasant. won't be going back.

Marquis of Cornwallis, Bloomsbury

OK, it's become a gastropub and has all kinds of posh lah-di-dah beers in it and would probably make CAMRA sick to the stomach, but you know what, it's actually really nice.

Expensive, but it feels like you're actually getting something good for the extra money you spend. The Hefeweissner beers on tap are top notch.

The Parrot, Canterbury

OK, so I've only been here once, and it was a Sunday afternoon, but I didn't see a single chav in the whole place. I had a couple of very tasty pints and the food was superb. Fresh veg and proper ingredients instead of the usual frozen/reformed crap you get makes a huge difference. Can't fault it for a Sunday pie and pint.

The Archery Tavern, Bayswater

simply fabulous.
the ale was delicious, so was the house red. the landlady was very friendly too.

finding a pub in london that keeps its beer as well as this pub is a hard business these days.

The Perseverance, Holborn

i've heard people wax lyrical about this pub, and i can't see why. the dark wood interior is not cool, it makes the whole place too dark. if it's rammed you can't hear yourself think in there. if i go to a pub i don't want to feel like i can't see or hear anything.

The Goat, West Green

a very friendly pub in a not-so-friendly area. selection of beer isn't terrific though they do have a polish beer called zywiec which is damn tasty. pool, darts and tv are all there, landlord and landlady are terrific. there are loads of pubs in west green you really don't want to set foot in. this isn't one of them.
