Captain Digby, Broadstairs

Having just enjoyed a fine lunchtime pint of Doom Bar at this quirky pub, I thought I would come on here and give the place a plug. The Captain Digby looks like a little castle perched on the cliffs just north of Broadstairs. The view from the beer garden is simply superb, the food perfectly acceptable and the staff were all exceptionally friendly. Plus there were four ales on which is more than I was expecting. I would definitely recommend this pub to anyone in the area.

Board and Elbow, Penrith

Popped into the Board & Elbow for a lunchtime pint whilst on holiday. Barman was friendly enough but music far too loud (we counted eight speakers in one room alone!) and interior decor very dated. Probably more of a youngsters' night spot. With a bit of investment this old pub could be really nice as it's in a prime location in the town. One day maybe.

George Hotel, Orton

We recently spent a week in lovely Orton and became regulars at The George. Although the sparse interior lacks that country pub ambience, the beer (always several ales on tap) and food were both good. Reasonably priced too.

The Bell, Skenfrith

Popped into the The Bell at Skenfrith for an afternoon pint during a recent summer holiday. Some might see it as being yet another soulless gastropub but we were all very impressed. The barman was most welcoming and a good range of local beers were on offer. Amazingly, we were the only ones there and were able to enjoy our ale in perfect peace in the immaculate garden. Didn't try the food but hear it's very highly rated. Will definitely return when next in the area.

The Hero, Burnham Overy Staithe

Fell into The Hero after getting completely frozen and soaked on the 1.5 mile hike from the beach. It's true that the exterior is a little underwhelming but the interior is cool and elegant. The ubiquitous Wherry was fine and our food excellent. The young man who served us throughout was especially friendly and helpful. Suitably refreshed and thawed, we were able to make the last 6 miles to Brancaster.

The Globe Inn, Wells next the Sea

Spent a few days in Wells recently and The Globe quickly became our pub of choice. It's tied to the Adnams Brewery so beer choice is a bit limited but perfectly acceptable. If the food is slightly pricey it's because it's freshly prepared and very tasty. The service was never less than excellent and the decor is splendid too. Recommended.

The Devonshire Arms, Hartington

Totally agree with what has been said already. The landlord is a genuinely friendly and likeable bloke and the food and beer are both excellent. Great value too. All villages need a pub like this. Well worth a visit at any time.

Castle, Earls Colne

Had the misfortune to visit this pub on a recent Sunday afternoon. Kids were running a mock everywhere, ignored by parents too busy knocking back the lager to care. One woman actually had her baby laying on the bar. Not quite sure how things have come to this sorry state as the pub itself is a lovely old place. Shame.

The Tower Arms, South Weald

Recently visited this place on a Sunday after a fine local walk. The extremely busy beer garden was not a place to dwell for more than the time it took to gulp down my over-priced, flat beer. The only food being offered alfesco was served from what looked like a converted garage and basically consisted of sausages, burgers or jacket spuds. And who thought it was a good idea to have loud music playing?... in a country pub garden! Do these people know nothing? Such a shame as it's in a lovely location.

The Hutton, Brentwood

This pub has recently been refurbished (now called The Hutton Junction) and I really like what they've done to it. There always seems to be a good and ever-changing selection of ales on tap and the staff are friendly and attentive. The restrained new decor gives the place an easy ambience and even the background music is a notch or two above the usual rubbish. Try it.

The Travellers Rest, Grasmere

What could be a lovely old inn was spoilt for us during our brief visit by a chronic lack of staff. One harassed young lady seemed to be pulling pints, serving food and receiving hotel guests. Perhaps we just caught it on a bad day.

The Golden Rule, Ambleside

Ambleside's best pub in our humble opinion and very welcoming in the early evening after a day spent stumbling around the fells. The Dizzy Blonde more than satisfied my current penchant for lighter ales (not lager). Don't mind the dated decor either but wish they would dim the lights a bit - why so bright?

The Mortal Man Inn, Troutbeck

Dropped into The Mortal Man on a glorious September day midway through the classic circuit from Ambleside. Had no idea about it's troubled recent past. Pleased to report that the new owners have done a terrific job inside and out. Enjoyed a couple of fine pints of local ale (but can't remember which!) in what must be one of the best beer gardens in the country. A special place.

The Sun Hotel, Coniston

Visited this excellent pub in late September after an exhausting day spent climbing the Old Man and surrounding peaks. Really impressed with the large range of real ales on offer and the views from the garden are exceptional. Interior looks nice and cosy too. Highly recommended for post-hike refreshment.

The Hammersmith Ram, Hammersmith

Without doubt one of the best pubs in Hammersmith, although this really isn't saying very much. The rustic interior is pleasantly soothing, the staff are friendly and, being a Young's establishment, the beer is excellent. I often escape to here in my lunch break and it always does the trick.

The Victory Hotel, West Mersea

Recently visited this busy pub on one of the few fine Sundays we've had this summer. Food was really excellent although a little patience was required owing to the 45 minute wait. However this gave us more time to enjoy the very decent beer and the terrific views from the front garden. Highly recommended.

The Swan, Brentwood

Far and away the best pub in the high street, although that really isn't saying very much. Always a good selection of ales on offer and the bar staff are very efficient. Recent refurbishment has greatly brightened up the interior. Decent garden too.

The Chequers Inn, Goldhanger

A wonderfully honest old pub in a lovely village on the beautiful Blackwater estuary. Combine with a local ramble for a great day out.

The Greyhound, Brentwood

A fine old country pub in a really tranquil setting. Go on a sunny weekday to avoid the crowds and sit out front with a pint of Fullers - you'd never believe Brentwood is just down the road.

The Nags Head, Brentwood

Recently visited this so called country pub with friends. Couldn't believe that they didn't sell any bitter, just expensive designer fizz. The epitome of the corporate, soulless boozer. Will stick with The Swan in future.
