The Tattersalls Tavern, Knightsbridge

I take back the previous review. This place is actually fine. I now think I was wrongly overcharged for a round - which happens - and assumed this was their regular prices. I tried to get the review taken down but BITE ignored the request.

The Tattersalls Tavern, Knightsbridge

This pub is an utter disgrace: Getting on for 6 pounds a pint and other copious overpricing. They make a lot of money during the summer from charity softball league that plays in Hyde Park, but moves are afoot for a boycott and account of their greed and lack of respect for customers.

The Oakmere House, Potters Bar

The food is OK, but unfortunately they don't sell proper beer.

Old Barn, Bognor Regis

Closed down right now on account of activities that were of considerable interest to the local constabulary.

The Glasshouse Stores, Piccadilly Circus

Im totally fed up with Sam Smiths pubs. Despite being located slap bang in the middle of Soho none of them have bothered to get late licenses, even for the weekend. You go to the effort of coming into town then find yourself wondering the streets at 11:15 trying to find a place to go.

This one is the worst yet. I was denied service at 10:55 and then hectored on to the street almost immediately. I was a bit rude to the staff in response, for which I apologise. But really, what enough is the problem with staying open at least until the last tube.

If Sam Smiths as a chain isnt interested in meeting customers and Sohos basic requirements then frankly why dont they sell up and let someone else have a go?

White Lion Of Mortimer, Finsbury Park

It may not seem like a particularly appealing place but we had a great pint of American style IPA in here the other night and it only cost 2. With the other pubs in the area starting to charge stupid prices this place starts to become a better bet.

The Worlds End, Finsbury Park

Agree with the previous reviewer as this place has improved tremendously and now competes with the fullback for the best pub in FP. Sunday roast is particularly good, and reasonably priced. Only complaint was a rather poor pint of bitter.

The Stapleton Tavern, Finsbury Park

Update: they have now gone stingy with the roasts. Two potatoes only and much reduced quantities of veg, replaced by a surfeit of gravy. Shame, because they had it about right before.

Stonemasons Arms, Hammersmith

Chargin 5.25 for a single gin and tonic is indecent.

The Champion, Fitzrovia

This place would be great if it were not for two things.

a) It doesn't do propper beer. Only electrically pumped stuff which is really not good.
b) Surely a pub in this part of town should stay open until 12 on a Saturday. What happened to late licensing?

Fix these two things and you have one of the best pubs in London.

The Stapleton Tavern, Finsbury Park

The refurbishment has lead to a big big improvement, especially the room at the back which looks fabulous (especially with an open fire and a Christmas tree). We had a Sunday lunch which was OK; the emphasis on quantity over gastro-ponciness and parsimony (see over the road) was welcomed by some of our group.

Holly Bush, Shenstone

The only place to serve food in the Shenstone on a Monday afternoon... Food was not bad either and ample portions. Friendly service too.

The Swimmer at The Grafton Arms, Holloway

This place is a bit of Gem. Really nice interior and exterior, with a good juke box and drink selection. Food has also been good in my experience, although they could do with a better fan or something to combat the smoke from the open kitchen.

The Woodbine, Highbury

This tends to be the more appealing place in area dominated by gooner pubs. Dim lighting, half-decent music, dodgy art on the walls, good drinks = effective combination. Never found the staffs' attitude to be a problem - not convinced that all that important anyway.

The Rose and Crown, Stoke Newington

Seriously though, this pub is great. I've been coming here for a while and cannot remember a bad pint of bitter . The food is good and there's a decent (if challenging) quiz on Tuesdays.

The Fox Inn, Felpham

I'd like to change my earlier review of this place. The beer is still good but the food has gone downhill a lot.

The Old Dairy, Finsbury Park

This place benefits from its prominent location, and it's nice enough. However the price of both food and drink is way over the odds so I would encourage people to go over the road - or elsewhere - until they get that in order.

The Shaftesbury, Holloway

This is a very attractive place, though unfortunately rather awkward to get to. Beer is good and the music selection is a big plus. Not so sure about the food though, and only one vegetarian option on the menu causes embarrassment when you've invited veggies to meet you there.

The Brown Bear, Whitechapel

This is a nice enough pub in an area where there doesn't seem to be much competition. I liked that they had some good music on. However would have to agree with other comments about the quality of the ale, which is really poor. I switched to wine but that wasn't much better.

The Alexandra Bar and Eating House, Finsbury Park

This pub is now a big pile of rubble.

23 Jan 2010 15:47

The Alexandra Bar and Dining Room, Finsbury Park

This has been demolished.

23 Jan 2010 15:46

The Fox Inn, Felpham

This is a good pub. The best in Felpham, possibly also Bognor. There's a good selection of beer, the food is good (though not the puddings!) and no TV screens.

23 Jan 2010 15:44

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

Lovely interior and good beer. However it's one of those places that can't wait to get rid of you as soon as it gets to 11. There's lots of shouting, they even stole my drink. Whatever happened to late licensing?
