The John O'Gaunt Inn, Hungerford

Massively improved under current management (Paddy and Steve). Always at least 6 real ales on tap, many from local brewers like Three Castles, Pewsey and Ramsbury. Excellent food, especially the Seychelles curry! Friendly and welcoming.

The only downside is that the building itself is badly in need of some TLC... which hopefully will happen when Greene King give up the lease next year.

Bristol Ram, Bristol

Fine if you want to watch Sky Sports... otherwise nothing much to recommend. OK but over-priced beer, characterless and uninteresting place.

The Cornubia, Bristol

Visited for the first time this week... and enjoyed it so much I went back the next day. No experience of the trials and tribulations others have referred to, but it would certainly seem that the place is on form now. Great choice of beers, and ciders, and friendly efficient service, especially from the lady on Monday night. Couldn't have enjoyed it more.

The White Lion, Bristol

Excellent little boozer. Definitely a drinker's pub, with locals who clearly enjoy their pint(s)! And with beer at less than 2 a pint, who wouldn't? Not much space inside, but outside tables to sit and watch Bristol go by.

The Queens Arms, Breage

Very decent pub just a little off the beaten track so not quite as frantic as some in the area. Great selection of real ales, regulars as well as guests, and excellent food. Dog and children friendly too.

Harbour Inn, Porthleven

Don't bother... cross over the harbour to The Ship instead. This place is a classic example of a potentially excellent pub ruined by corporatisation.

The Ship Inn, Porthleven

An absolute classic. If only all seaside pubs were like this! Stunning location with a great real pub atmosphere. Obviously heavy on the food, especially in the summer months, but that never detracts from this being first and foremost a pub.

The Tower Inn, Slapton

Lovely old pub. Good range of local real ales. Superb food... although a bit more up-market than pub grub. A bit tricky to find... and don't even attempt to get into the car park. Park in the village and walk... you'll see why.

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

Beer was excellent, food was average (not as bad as some comments below but not great), place was packed even in April

The Kings Arms, Hawkshead

Excellent - exactly what a good pub should be. Friendly and welcoming (dogs and muddy boots included). Great choice of beers - two Hawkshead brews and Coniston Bluebird plus a guest beer. Good sensibly-priced food available in both the bar and the separate dining room. Also does B&B.

A classic Lakeland pub.

The Sun Inn, Hawkshead

Can't understand the enthusiasm for this pub. I found it bland and characterless. Only (real) beer on offer was Jennings (not bad in itself but it does purport to be a free house). Can't comment on the food - didn't feel like staying to try it.

There are much better pubs in Hawkshead - try the Kings Arms for instance.

The Griffin, Brentford

Excellent pub, easily the best of the four on the corners of the ground (what ground? Griffin Park, home of Brentford of course!). Good beer, good food, friendly efficient staff.
