Bar 38, Aldgate

Has since closed and reopened as Abbey - something to do with the same people that run Tiger Tiger so I'm told.

Not a pub, but a "Bar" instead. Downstairs is DJs and loud tunes on a Friday and probably Thursdays also.

Full of City workers but seems a nice enough place.

The George, London Bridge

Been here a number of times, but unless it is the summer and you can sit outside I will probably not bother going anymore.

The building is lovely, no argument on that front. The staff are not particually good and spend too much time messing around and not getting the beers out. The bar is always crowded, probably due to having to wait. And even after the wait it's not great beer.

Personally I quite like Greene King beer. Try visit the brewery and see what it should be like. I think it comes down to the staff not looking after the beer.

The place is heaving in the summer and makes the whole prospect of trying to get drinks even more of a chore. Never had any problems with the security so cannot comment nor have I tried the food.

The Red Barn, Barnehurst

Drunk in here a few times, but only during the afternoon. Not a bad place, never felt unwelcome or noticed any problems going on whilst being there.

They had Guiness Red when I was there and happily sat with a few pints of that with my mate over a few hours. The bar staff ranged from efficient to just plain useless. Never rude but just not very good at the job in hand.

Would go there again to have a quiet drink but imagine the evening would be a little raucous so would probably avoid.

All in all not bad and always worth, trying in nearby. But not really a place to head out of your way to.

The Chamberlain Hotel, Aldgate

Drink here quite a lot when meeting friends. Don't quite follow the previous comment o n lack of Fullers beers. They have most of the range available and for some of them (Golden Pride, 1845, Vintage Ale, etc.) both chilled and not.

The food is very good and I can recommend the steak or Fish & Chips. The bar and restaurant have had a big make-over in the last 6 months and moved away from the sports crowd that used to be there during big football.

During the evening there are a lot of city people but it is not a bad crowd in anyway and there has never been any trouble. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the beers they serve. When it is a little quieter they even do table service so there is no need to leave the leather sofas when you get one.

The Princess Alice, West Thamesmead

I work near this place and have been there a couple of times. I haven't seen any trouble but not been there of an evening only for a cheeky pint during lunch.

It is not a particually nice place but then not exactly bad. Modern building wanting to have some history and trying to buy ambience.

The ale is pretty average at best and the food is pretty crap. Steak was like boot leather!

Would probably go there again for a drink with work colleagues but will keep the food to a nice simple sandwich.
