The Fox Inn, Bramdean

We've been popping in here quite often in recent months. Always very welcoming and with excellent and reasonably priced beer, particularly the Summer Lightning which, in our opinion is the best in the area. It's now been swapped out for Winter Lightning which is also lovely. A worthwhile stop on the A272.

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

This is our first comment on BITE for quite a while. We've been into the Hawkley Inn a few times over the last 6 months. Every time we've immediately been asked if we want food prior to getting a drink. It seems drinkers are less welcome these days which is a shame given that this has always been known as a place for good real ale (and characters!). That said, the beer (Red Cat Macavity porter) was excellent; just what you want at this time of the year.

The White Horse Inn, Priors Dean

We visited the beer festival this afternoon having not been for a couple of years. Well organised but perhaps a bit smaller than in the past. Plenty of beers and ciders on offer and found a few good ones but not enough to keep us there all evening. A few aspects put one off though: £4/pint is quite high for a beer ex and we've never been to a beer ex with uniformed security guards before! We must've missed the guest appearance by Kylie! Bring back beer festivals where you can get drunk and stagger into your tent without being watched! Previously this was a good venue but it seems to have become too commercial. What a shame.

The Albion, Winchester

I totally agree with the previous comment. We've been in a couple of times since Cheriton took the pub over. Before that, the attraction was that Paul kept an interestingly different and eclectic range of cask and bottled beers which you wouldn't find elsewhere in Winchester , let alone elsewhere, the atmosphere was convivial ...and the location is convenient for getting home.

Now, the pub is sparsely decorated, brightly lit and, frankly, lacks atmosphere; a waiting room or operating theatre springs to mind. The range of beers is limited. Don't get us wrong, we really like Cheriton beers - but sometimes it is nice to try something else.

Cloisters Bar, Edinburgh

Visited on a recent visit to Edinburgh. Good to see decent beer on offer; staff always friendly. Hope the t-shirts arrived safely ;) We'll be back later in the year...

The Rising Sun, Nether Green

Couldn't pass up the chance to visit again whilst in Sheffield. As ever, the beers were excellent. First time visit for my mate who now realises there is good beer to be had outside of Surrey!

The Hillsborough Hotel, Sheffield

Booked in on Wednesday night as was working in the area. Enjoyable stay, friendly staff and good ale at a good price. What more could you want?

24 Feb 2012 18:15

The Partridge, Partridge Green

I went in here between Christmas and New Year. Apa was excellent. Returned last night and Thornbridge Puja was superb. A huge improvement on previous visits.

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

Wouldn't usually comment two weeks in a row but.... Fabulous Bateman's Victory (5.9%). Shame about the deck chair behind the bar though !

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

Visited 15th and 16th October at lunchtime. Saturday: Quiver okay, Wallops Wood great. Sunday: Russet cider and Three Castles Corn Dolly.... Lovely; Slug porter also excellent. Duro in good form too (even though the Welsh lost!)

The Evening Star, Brighton

We have been meaning to visit for some time and finally made it yesterday. A far better pub than The Partridge with an excellent range of beers, all well kept. In addition to the Dark Star and Belgian offerings, Magic Rock Human Canonball was dangerously infectious. Enjoyed talking to a gentleman from Bounemouth waiting for his lift home!

Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

Our second visit a couple of weeks ago. Great selection of beers, including 3 Dark Star however Thornbridge Galaxia and Jaipur were excellent.

4 Sep 2011 16:45

The Partridge, Partridge Green

Another visit: Hophead was disappointing. Ought to be better given that this is the brewery tap. A shame as plenty other local pubs keep it far better.

4 Sep 2011 16:36

The Duke Of Wellington, Shoreham by Sea

Our second visit to this pub yesterday. Very well kept beer; we enjoyed Green Daemon Helles from Kent this time round and Dark Star APA on the first visit. Must give it another try when there's music on.

The Harley, Sheffield

We've been here twice now and noticed a huge improvement second time round. The place is much cleaner and now has a well kept Abbeydale ale on tap in addition to the lagers. Regular live music also...with my son on the bill on this occasion!

The Partridge, Partridge Green

3rd visit here. Best one so far. Good to see APA on which was in good condition. Food reasonably priced. Stilton ploughmans and ham, egg and chips were both tasty accompaniments to the beer.

2 Jul 2011 21:05

Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

16 beers on tap including the lagers. Always good to have an opportunity to try something different.

12 Jun 2011 15:57

The Bath Hotel, Sheffield

Our second (and third) visits. Always a friendly welcome. Beers kept well. Lovely pint of Abbeydale Deception...

12 Jun 2011 15:53

The Red Lion Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Lovely pint of Summer Lightning. Not keen on Kings though. Will visit again soon...

4 Jun 2011 18:56

The Hampshire Arms, Crondall

Although we're not keen on Greene King, we do use this pub quite regularly. It is hugely improved now that it is under new management. Nice pint of Tribute last weekend. Keep bringing in guest ales! We'll drink lemonade if there is only GK IPA on offer!

26 May 2011 17:48

Sir Timothy Shelley, Worthing

Good to see Wetherspoons supporting local breweries; a nice pint of Dark Star Sunburst, which stood out, but several other options on offer too.

26 May 2011 17:42

The Chequer Inn, Steyning

We visited last Tuesday evening. Lovely pint of Dark Star APA and food simple and very good. Good banter with the bar staff... A most enjoyable evening.

26 May 2011 17:37

The Royal Sovereign, Shoreham by Sea

Agree with previous comment - Dark Star American Pale Ale was absolutely excellent. Atmosphere was also friendly and relaxed. Enjoyed watching the horse racing on Saturday afternoon. More pubs should do this. We'll return.

17 Apr 2011 16:53

The Partridge, Partridge Green

We were keen to visit The Partridge knowing it had recently been taken over by Dark Star and finally made it last Friday afternoon. What a disappointment. We've tasted far better kept Dark Star beers elsewhere (Chequers, Steyning and The Hawkley). Hophead and Best Bitter were very mediocre. A pity to see no American Pale Ale on as this is our favourite of all. Hope things improve; we'll try again in a few weeks...

17 Apr 2011 16:36

The Fountain, Ashurst

Visited last Thursday evening. Great pint of Directors and Harveys Sussex Best was also good. Easy going atmosphere.

3 Apr 2011 19:47

The Rose and Crown, Godalming

Avoid at all costs on Sunday lunchtime during the football season. Full of noisy football supporting types with young brats. Didn't try the real ale as not keen on Pride or Youngs; had a pint of lager and got out. Went down to the Star - far better pub altogether.

20 Mar 2011 14:29

The Nelson, Farnham

Regularly used to visit this pub on Friday evening / Sunday afternoon. Recent visit was most disappointing. Beer choice was poor as was quality. We didn't eat this time as food has been disappointing in the past. Pub seems to have lost it's way since the one member of staff who was interested in the beer and the locals has left.

13 Mar 2011 20:03

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

Visited this lunchtime. Refreshing to see a different selection of ales on the board. Pub was bustling with plenty tables taken for food but a fair number of drinkers also. Staff on good form. Good to see...

13 Mar 2011 19:38

The Sportsman, Amberley

12pm Sunday lunchtime. Best Langham's Hip Hop we've had. Friendly staff too. Worth a return visit as food looked good as well. We'll be back....

9 Jan 2011 13:32

The Merry Harriers, Hambledon

We visited this pub today as we do every 2 to 3 weeks. We were very sorry to find that the pub is to have its licence reviewed due to a single noise complaint. Pubs such as this provide a focus for the local community which is otherwise unavailable, as well as consistently serving good real ales and food. It is so important that pubs such as this one are encouraged to stay in business. The current landlord and his wife have turned this pub around and put so much effort into it that it would be a travesty if this were to be lost. It is great to see live music advertised and long may this continue. It is great to be able to turn up with a tent in the back of the car and not have to worry about driving home.

15 Aug 2010 19:37

The Devonshire Cat, Sheffield

Pictish Maelstrom, Acorn Green Bullet, Thornbridge Jaipur and Abbeydale Moonshine all excellent. Our third visit here; always worth a shout.

7 Aug 2010 13:40

The Bath Hotel, Sheffield

Great pint of Abbeydale Deception to start off the session in Sheffield. Well worth a visit. Devonshire Cat next...

7 Aug 2010 13:31

The Prince of Wales, Aldershot

aldershot is a dump! why go there in the first place?

1 Jul 2010 20:05

The Nelson, Farnham

lovely pint of dazed and confused fff landlord on and altons pride. good too see beer sorted out. try it.

1 Jul 2010 19:50

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

We regularly use this pub and have had good meals there. Beer always good. More choice since the glums have gone and a good atmosphere. Good to see everyone back in the bar where they belong. May it continue.
