The Silver Star, Ipswich

Alway was horrible. Never mind - I think it's closed now.

Lloyds Tavern, Ipswich

Don't know why this place has never done well as it should have potential. Went upstairs to play pool and the upstairs bar was totally deserted. When first opened, both floors were often busy, but that very soon faded. Used to be a job centre. As I now work in a job centre, shame it still isn't. Might make the work a little more interesting, but we'd never get rid of the claimants.

The Kingfisher, Ipswich

At least it's a local pub with local people in it and there's usually one hand pump lurking among the fizzy pop. Now has regular tribute acts on. At least they're trying. Big projection TV in back room, but it's hard to tell who's playing as the bulb is past its lifetime so the colours are all wrong, and you can't tell the score as it flashes up 'bulb life exceeded' in the top left corner just where the score goes ...

Isaac's Free House, Ipswich

A bar this far out of the town centre needs a gimmick, especially now its one time owner the Tolly brewery just along the quay is no more.
Maybe bring back the days as a flavoured vodka bar?
The people who are buying the flats springing up on the docks (sorry - "Waterfront quarter") which are blocking off historical access so they can watch the little boats bobbing around in the marina are not going to bother with a proper local pub.

The Horse and Groom, Ipswich

What a shame. I came in here when I lived round the corner a few years ago, as did my Dad just after WW2 and his Dad in the 30s. We all liked it as it served the function in ways fitting for each time. This just shows - the traditional pub is dead, largely thanks to government policies. How can it cope when supermarkets sell beer more cheaply than it can buy?
Now kids get drunk on cheap booze at home and go into town to throw up on and fight / shag each other.

The Earl Kitchener, Ipswich

Don't even bother with it!
I'm a local, and it's not for me.
One for walking past on the way to town while thinking
"What a shame we haven't got even a part way decent local pub".

The Punch Bowl, Battisford

Forgot to rate it. Let's say six. I'm going back in three weeks - see what I think of it then.

The Punch Bowl, Battisford

Well, today there was one hand pump working, with an acceptable pint of Adnams. All main courses for 7.95 (except for 8 oz. steak 9.95) - including the Sunday roast, which is usually a cheaper item, so this was a shame. I did also expect more than one slice of beef, but it was quite thick, so with the veg. and batter pudding it was sufficient. My wife also enjoyed the cod and prawn Thai fishcakes.
