Visited lunchtime midweek, one word...disappointing! Lovely surroundings, although a little "done" for my taste. Two menus which provided an unnecessarily large choice and judging by the bought in (we asked the waitress), mushy, bland tart of leek, gruyere and parmesan, too much for the chef to maintain quality. However it was the poor service that really let it down, don't you hate waitresses that make you feel that they are doing you a favour? That expect you to order because they are ready? And then get stroppy when you are ready and they are busy chatting with other staff members behind the bar!
Also thought it expensive...eg. leek, pear and blue cheese tart (yes another leek tart on the other menu) for 12.95! I don't know how big it was but for that price it would need to be the size of a dinner plate. Shame because as I said, lovely rooms, building and situation,

Sorry but 8.50 for a very average sandwich does not cut the mustard. Won't be back in a hurry.

Returned to the Hawkley after a long absence and with some trepidation having read the reviews below. By chance new manager's first weekend. Seems the chap has run a few pubs before and is not an accountant, plumber or other non-publican. Good pint(s) and good vibe with banter flying. Fingers crossed for the future.

Seems a lot cleaner recently, staff are friendlier too. New evening menu of English Tapas is tickling my taste buds, particularly the potted crab! Real ales are now local-ish, Harveys Best, Bowman Swift One and Triple fff Stairway. Could do with a re-paint in places. Still the place in Petersfield.

Sadly seems to be spiralling out of control. Hemorrhaging staff at the moment with all the dips in service that brings. Good basic idea, but in the wrong pub. Previous landlords have ripped out all the character, very difficult to put it back without appearing ersatz.

The Old Drum, Petersfield
Knew the licensee from The Hawkley Inn, not surprised they've made such a good job of this one. Great to have such a selection of real ales in town, and not a 3663 or Brakes Brothers lorry in sight! The one question on everyone's lips "where did all the old clients go?". Keep up the good work.
