The Fat Cat, Sheffield

Small but perfectly formed, next door to Kelham Island brewery and showcases three KI beers, other good guests, contunential bottles, Saxon draught cider, filling Sunday lunches, veggie and vegan food has high reputation.

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

Outstanding beer range, house beers excellent (Pictish Brewers Gold and Acorn Barnsley Bitter), their K.I. Tavern Bitter (brewed by Concertina) also very good, another six guests plus german draught lager and weissbier, dozens of bottles, fruit wines.

Comfy, easy going atmosphere, extension to the back along with a patio area. Well worth the trip out to it.

The Ship Inn, Sheffield

Well kept Hardy & Hansons bitter, huge pub that clearly has seen busier days in its past

The Wellington, Sheffield

Great beers, lots of continental bottles too had a good laugh with the regulars, right by the Shalesmoor tram stop so easy to get to from city centre, five minutes walk to Fat Cat and Kelham Island Tavern so you can have a great mini-crawl here.

Ye Olde Dolphin Inn, Derby

Big on olde worlde tourist appeal but could do with a brush up, its looking a bit tired inside. Food is excellent, beer range small but decent, large patio to rear, twice yearly festivals follow on a couple of weeks after the CAMRA festivals.

The Smithfield, Derby

Good Oakham beers, huge sarnies, out of the way of the usual shoppers throng but still only five minutes from the market place, great place to escsape to for a decent pint.

The Old Silk Mill, Derby

Half-a-dozen decent beers, can get a bit loud with large screen TV, never had a problem with the food but haven't eaten there recently.

The Flowerpot, Derby

Plenty of ales on offer, Tardis-like rooms and a patio area, renowned for its live music.

The Babington Arms, Derby

Not in a backwater - right in the centre of the city. Serves two decent draught ciders alongside the fizzy stuff, several bottles including perry as well.

Probably the best Spoons in the country; twelve pumps serving wide range of beers, each week they showcase a particular brewery at the weekend and they run their own festivals as well as the JDW ones.

It's a low-ceiling building and does get smoky quickly; the rear area is no-smoking but has inevitable drift, savoid it by sitting near the front which is opened out in the summer.

The Wellington, Birmingham

I usually visit at lunch and haven't found it to be too smoky, could see how it could build up through the day though. Fantastic range of beers and ciders, helpful staff, an absolute must visit in Brum as the city centre is generally poor for real ale.

Carpenters Arms, Ilkeston

Fantastic pub, short menu but it's all great, Speckled Hen and Adnams on cask, popular with walkers, comfy lounge and seperate bat with real fire.

The Brunswick Inn, Derby

Trevor's gone but the beer's still good, proper cider as well, lunch food is filling and cheap, no-smoking room available, absolutley rammed on matchdays but a cracking real ale pub that faces The Alexandra Hotel so you get two of Derby's best pubs next to each other.

The Alexandra Hotel, Derby

Good, honest Tynemill pub, at least eight real ales on tap, busy on match days but an ale haven on quiet midweek evenings.
