Balmwell, Edinburgh

Now a Toby carvery, so not really a proper pub as such though you can get drinks. Can't knock all-you-can-eat though.

The Tickled Trout, Edinburgh

NOW CLOSED.

Was relaunched as the Blue Goose but has now shut.

The Turf Tavern, Carlisle

A bit stuck out on a limb this pub, cut off by dual carriageways and hardwicke circus from the rest of the city centre, but when eventually found nestles pleasantly near the banks of the eden (hence recurring flooding issues). Has had *numerous* rebrands / refittings over the years (anyone remember turf shotz?) but is now a hungry horse pub and was well rammed when we went in recently. Didn't test the beer garden as the rain was torrential. Decent selection of beer, family friendly, food better than wetherspoons 7/10

Republic Bier Halle, Glasgow

want beer? want pizza? then come here. Large variety of bottled beers (draught is a lot smaller selection) and a friendly atmosphere. Compared to your typical west of scotland boozer that consists of a strobing tennents 'T', windows you can't see through and a invitation to a fight if you're not from the local gene puddle this place sticks out like an oasis in a desert of civilised boozers.

The Kings Head Inn, Carlisle

Love it. Decent beer, no bother, wooden tables, old-style seating, good landlord. Better than the overrated Howard in my opinion and definitely the most central pub in carlisle (100 yards to the market cross?). Did take me a while to realise it had an upstairs like...

The Boardroom, Carlisle

Used to frequent here in the 90s when i was a 6th former (shh) and when I came back from uni. Was handy for the wheel, just nipping through the cut to west walls. Been back a few times since and its still a decent pub, nice ber, cheap food on in the day, nice old style booths, and as said it benefits from not being down Booze Canyon (tm) and attracts a slightly better crowd.

Three Sisters, Edinburgh

hen/stag night hades. Rammed at weekends, a literal physical fight for bar attention. Ominously the only pub in edinburgh I've been asked to leave (cos of a friend's actions before you ask :-) ). The bouncers are expletives deleted.

The Black Bull Tavern, Edinburgh

8 for the jukebox alone, great atmosphere

Hunters Tryst, Edinburgh

Yeah, it's child hostile and i don't know why. It has plenty of room and it's never exactly heaving, and given the local competition is the good companions (eek) or a schelp to swanston golf club it's missing a trick i feel. No way does it make more out of child-haters than it would from families.

Still, the beer is a good selection and the food is edible, but still, they'd get a lot more of my custom if they let kids in, its my nearest pub. Maybe better for my bank balance they don't...

The Merlin, Morningside

Nice pub with good food, decent enough beer. Have to agree with the service issue though, i could maybe understand slackness in taking orders but in getting the money off me at the end? A few times I've wondered about just sneaking out the door, they're not paying attention...

Royal Ettrick Hotel, Edinburgh

Decent bar in a hotel. Now the gillsland/orwell have shut it's the only bar in the area between polwarth and craiglockhart on the 27 bus route. Nice food, was getting pricier though, and the beer isn't exactly varied, hmm carlsberg or.. carlsberg export. Has other bars apart from the main bar but only open for weddings/functions/big days etc.
Now it sounds like i don't like the place but i do, it's kiddy friendly, the staff are helpful and the clientele are an unmenacing bunch of locals/guests. I used to be in weekly but have since moved...

The Golf Tavern, Edinburgh

Have to concur, it's horrible and lost it's soul. Plus the layout is rubbish. A MASSIVE bar island takes up the middle of the downstairs (there's an upstairs bit too), and the tables are little sad affairs scattered round the perimeter. It seems half the size of the old golf.

The Waiting Room, Edinburgh

Does Erdinger in bottles and great burgers. I'll forgive them for not allowing kids, i think this pub suits it.
