Chequers, Walthamstow

Pub looks the part for E17. Shabby chic interior but shitty opening hours. Great beer selection, although can be pricey. Ale served in a tankard which is always good. Almost always warm which is good depending on your view. Food looks great on the menu but in reality is average. Had the burger (messy) and the fish n chips (nothing to write home about). Music is great if you like noisy alternative (think Pixies). Clean, good toilets, spacious. Be prepared to overhear wanky hipster conversations if alone, otherwise enjoy local brewed beer (Hackney Brewery). Guest ales from £3.80.

The Sutton Arms, Barbican

Love this place. Its often not busy in the evening so if you like things like not queuing, a decent enough selection of beers including guest ale, and a lack of noisy City-types, this is ideal. Also has an excellent jukebox featuring Bowie, Floyd, Dylan etc (free!) and very nice bar staff. Also does a good selection of food although I haven't tried anything other than the chips!

The Cat and Mutton, Hackney

Went a couple of weeks ago. Its still the same pub in the summertime as what olliesmyhero says below - the hipster gypos sit outside with their cans from the off licence. Pub itself is still rubbish - the problem is that the service is so bad. Went with a party, bought a lot of food but the coke I asked for didn't turn up, neither did an extra plate. Staff seemed apathetic and idle. Customers are not treated warmly here. Food's actually not bad but the service is rubbish.

The Beaten Docket, Cricklewood

You can't beat the Docket!!! Yes, its a Wetherspoons -but it doesn't feel like it so much. Nice little booths to tuck yourself away into while you scoff your Docket dinner (reasonable fare, Wetherspoon prices, can't complain really) - lots of old men, decent enough ales that change regularly, and stacks of old books on the walls that give it some individual character. I love it.
