Cosiest pub in Reigate, with good atmosphere and food. A plasma screen shows the footie and the pub has an active and long standing Golf Society which seems to go abroad every year.
Beer is excellent and the staff, friendly - overall, a very pleasant spot to while away an hour or three.

Last week, I entered at about 7pm only to see the fairhaired barmaid having her dinner at one of the tables, with her boyfriend (?). Service seemed to be a chore and my interuption (a pint of bitter, please) unwelcome.
If this place is under new management, it certainly does'nt show and I share the dreadful/dreary view of previous posters.

Unless Punch Taverns invest in this closed pub/hotel/restaurant on the A24, the Dukes Head has no future. And - with the credit crunch and better/town centre outlets to spend their money on - Punch will spend very little in Beare Green.
One alternative would be to give an extended rent free period to the new people - to allow this failed (more than once) business to revive. Knowing Punch, they will be unlikely to go down this incomeless route.
The Dukes Head is heading for a very uncertain future, if any....

chloesteel's treatment was awful. Could the Manager shed any light on why it took 1.25 hours to serve a sandwich today ? Also why they're was a need to be rude ?

We thought raphaella had been put down ! Tell her to walk over the road to the POW, a good well managed pub - going places without clownish website advertising.

Yes...in there today. Awful. Palmer and slerpy should get lives - and brains (now available on the NHS). Muppets excluded.

Yes. PLEASE go.
If you are the manager - you are not good enough for a great pub with potential. The potential that YOU can never bring.
All of today's banter has been sent to Market Taverns ....by email.

The Sportsman 'Time Well Spent', Mogador
I would fully agree with the comments of susan1234; this has turned out to be a fine pub. But, its hard to find - unlike its sister pub, The Yew Tree on Reigate Hill {A217}.
Signs will be important to direct new customers to this former shooting lodge up a laneway/cul-de-sac in rural Mogador.

Its official.
The Red Cross is Reigate's worst pub - because of its awful staff and zero management; the same 'management' run the nearby Blue Anchor (tipped for the 2009 award).
For example - staff don't greet or thank (just read The Sun), constantly chat (to each other), Lionel - the manager - is always elsewhere (drinking in other local pubs), no maintenance (whatsoever), etc.etc.
And then there is the matter of hygiene !

The Purley Arms, South Croydon

The Skimmington Castle, Reigate Heath
The Surrey Mirror had a piece on this, now closed, pub last week. Punch Taverns own it and the reason for closure remains unclear; however standards had dropped (see recent reviews). Punch say it will reopen soon - but the competition within 2/3 miles, on and just off the A25, is huge.

Comments on the Dog and Duck would aslo apply to The Junction, although the latter makes an effort on food. Numerous management changes tell the story; it was a Hob Goglin, an O'Neils - now its nothing really.

If its a few years since Biggus went in to The Angel, it would be difficult for him to know what the place is like ! OK, the outside is next for the ongoing refurbishment - but the hygiene, food quality and atmosphere is unrivalled in Surrey. Why else do Canons staff flock there daily ?

The Tickled Ivory Piano Lounge, Reigate
If this place is in Guildford, why the Reigate address/map and all ? Is H File on a trip ? Init.

Rumour is that the RCI's future is as a wine bar; it simply can't continue to trade as it is. A fine old pub, but empty, rudderless and soulless.

Agree with Biker. The intriguing question is - 'why will Raphaella not post on the POW site, about the POW ?'
She has already made a laughing stock of The Crown on BITE and, I see, it has spread to other sites. But, has she got a plan - or even a brain ?
28 Aug 2008 16:04
Raph...Westcott people have CLASS...please don't try to ruin it. Yes ...as simw says the POW is much better - and your facts are wrong (about that more frequented hygenic place)..................again

Awww yes. The Muppets ARE back. 'Beer/spirit reps. lunch there'. Reps. will go anywhere for a free meal, Gutzeit. BTW, does Paul have 'another' new girlfriend ?

After seven months of silence - six posts in a week; five of which were very positve. Paladian, I [as a local] agree with your view; the roadworks/constant traffic/lights/noise on the A25 outside - did'nt even merit a mention from the new 'fans' !

Ideal central location, on a corner. Large and well designed on two floors. But, what a disapointment ! Management and staff simply have NO interest and are, just about, polite. Except on weekend evenings, the place is virtually empty, as, one visit is enough. Sad, because the potential for this c7000 square foot pub is enormous - shoppers have to pass it; handy for locals (on bus routes); historic town, on A25 just off M25; huge passing trade; affluent area; little real competition; near only supermarket; numerous colleges and high calibre businesses; biggest town pub, by far; etc. What a waste.

Recently stopped there for a drink and a meal - on the way to the coast. Food, drink and servce were excellent and with its large car park, this pub is an ideal stop on the A24 from London. Sport was on TV and the locals were very friendly.

The Angel quiz night is great . Last week, a Canon's bloke was asked 'what's a valley between two mountains ?'. He didn't know and said 'pass'. 'Correct!' said the quizmaster and the bloke won a Trident missile. Surrey's smartest venue - although the caviar can taste a bit fishy.

Agree with previous post. The RA is a good example of what can happen to a pub with a succession of bad managers, over a number of years - with no capital investment or even a maintenance budget. A fine site - for what now really is a non-pub.

The Red Lion, Godalming
No problem with well behaved dogs. But Rosie is a young, daft, fit Great Dane who feels she has to greet her mates in a robust and salivating way. She's a lovely dog - but not for a food serving pub; how many other pubs do you know have a Great Dane running around the place, unsupervised ?!
