The Bell and Bottle, Shinfield

Ate here with a friend. Very brown decor, but lovely friendly staff and a perfectly decent basic pub meal at a good price. Loads of car parking, comfy chairs, nothing was too much trouble. If you're after a relaxing basic pub with nice people, this is your one.

Swan Inn, Arborfield

Had a lovely meal with family. Very nice staff, cosy traditional pub, food tasty and plenty of it. If you're looking for something terribly posh and twee, this isn't it. If you're looking for a really nice old fashioned pub with lovely people, head here fast.

The General Havelock Inn, Haydon

Surprising, but in a good way. Looks a bit 'eek' from the roadside - black exterior, nothing special. But lovely friendly staff, and a big restaurant area at the back overlooking the river, with outside seating.
Very good food. We'd go back.

Ship Inn, Middlestone

Absolutely brilliant local pub in this small hamlet. Very friendly owners, ate here five times in a week including with friends, and we didn't have a bad meal between us. Good pricing, everything nicely done as a wide range of decent pub food. Excellent choice of beers, too. Decor is typical pub style and it's not big, so book in advance. But we'd go back there without hesitation.

The Jekyll and Hyde, Turgis Green

Oh dear. Couldn't get through by phone to book, so booked online. Got confirmation email of this. Got there, no sign of reservation. No-one had bothered to check the computer. I'd asked in writing for a quiet corner...so we were put next to the coffee grinder in the busiest bit of the restaurant. My friend's fish and chips was bad enough that she left much of it "The chips were either so overdone you couldn't bite into them, or very underdone - strange!" My salad was the oddest I've had.: Everything was chopped into tiny pieces barring the egg and the tomato, and so I had quarter inch of chopped ingredients with those items perched on top. Hardly any avocado. The 'hand torn chicken' was cubed and processed. No dressing, nor offer of one. Staff were nice, which was something.
I've eaten here before and it was ok, but this was beyond strange.

Waggon & Horses, Beckhampton

Eaten here a couple of times. First time, my meal was very good but my friend's meal wasn't cooked properly. To their credit, they refunded it and offered to re-do it, though.
Second time, really lovely food for both of us. Nice people, too.

The Bear and Ragged Staff, Cumnor

One of the best meals I've ever had. Wonderful, friendly staff, excellent wine, prices not bad for really good quality food. Clean, comfortable, spacious, thoughtfully decorated, very large car park and a beautiful village. Very impressed indeed.

Selborne Arms, Selborne

All a bit odd, really. Went there with a client. His smoked salmon salad was great. Our steak and kidney pies weren't. Untrimmed meat, tasteless thin watery gravy. And we had to fight to get both potatoes and vegetables, since (we were told) one can only have one of the two things, not both. Coffee machine broken as well.
Loos are a sensory hazard - massive machinery operating under them which is intensely noisy and very big vibration, so be aware of this if you have anyone in your party who has sensory issues.

The Crown of Crucis Hotel, Ampney Crucis

Ate here last week. Can only echo what the last reviewer said. Lovely upgrade of decor etc in some ways, but previouls the place has always been packed with locals and filled with atmosphere and good food. This time, it was us...er and two other people. Two waitresses who were gossiping about life in the corner then taking it in turns to ask us if the food was ok (which is overkill -don't line up to ask the customers the same question please). My spaghetti carbonara was the worst I've ever had. It's a difficult dish to get wrong, but somehow every ingredient was miscooked in different ways. Hubby's burger and chips was fine, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a greasy cafe except the high price. Loos claustrophobic and not even a loo roll holder in mine. Piped music was teenage style, which is jolly odd for a pub in one of the most classic and well-to-do parts of the country. I liked it, but their natural clientele just won't, and appear to have voted with their feet in huge numbers.
It's easy to get things right here - but the landlord has to take the comments on board.

The George, Earley

It's always a gamble eating here. Tried again over the weekend, where we had two very decent sunday roasts but a very long wait for them to arrive. The new upgraded furniture and decor is an improvement, though.

The Three Tuns, Bishops Castle

Ate here several times in the holiday, and none of us had a bad meal or experience of any kind. Very good all round.

The Six Bells, Bishops Castle

Not sure what we made of this. The food was lovely. The owner was great. But there's only one choice of white wine, and only one choice of red, they don't take credit or debit cards, and hubby rated the condition of the male loos as 'I haven't had an experience like that in 30 years'.

The Bull, Sonning

Ate here during February 2011. Decent food, nice staff, lovely location.

The Burcott Inn, Wookey

Had a really lovely meal in this village pub in February 2011. Wonderful food, friendly staff.

The Catherine Wheel, Marshfield

Ate here several times in November 2010. Very good food, friendly staff, lovely warm fire in the main bar. It's an old coaching Inn so lots of history and a very beautiful building.

The George, Earley

New menu at the George, and the most recent meal was well cooked, the staff were friendly, and it was a pleasant experience. Maybe things are improving? I hope so...

The Thimble Inn, Piddlehinton

Eaten here about a year ago, and a month or so ago. Both times the food was good, the staff pleasant, plenty of room, nice location. Not posh, but does the basics well.

The Piddle Inn, Piddletrenthide

Ate here several times. One slightly stringy bit of Venison one evening, but other than that, really nice food and nice people too. Well worth visiting.

European Inn, Piddletrenthide

Ate there in October. Very much a restaurant rather than family pub. Nice food, well cooked - but it felt like we were sitting in someone's hallway of their house rather than in a pub. The loo was shocking, though - small, dingy, absolutely didn't match the high prices and cuisine.

Three Horseshoes, Cambridge

Absolutely brilliant! Fantastic friendly staff, incredible 'posh' food but so beautifully set out and superbly cooked, lovely setting. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

The Green Man, Hurst

Still one of our absolute favourite places to go. Food consistently good for two solid years of visits, friendly staff, lovely setting. Deserves to succeed.

Dinnington Docks, Hinton St George

If you can find it, well worth the visit. Unpretentious. It manages to be fairly basic to look at, and yet very relaxing and peaceful, with very friendly staff and really good pub food. Decent garden at the back for kids to run around in, too.

18 Mar 2009 15:49

The Fleur De Lis, Stoke Sub Hamdon

A strange combination of attractive exterior and friendly landlords, very 'designer' food presentation of very good quality, and yet within an interior that seems dated and loos that are more 'eek' than 'phew!'. The surrounding village is very basic by comparison to others, so they may struggle a bit to attract high-paying customers.

18 Mar 2009 15:46

The Lord Nelson, Norton Sub Hamdon

Very good food, friendly staff, but very noisy bar when we visited on a Friday night. Gets busy, so book early. Plenty of car parking, very scenic village. Worth a look.

The Maiden Over, Earley

We hear this pub is now closed as the Landlord has gone abroad. Update will follow when/if it reopens.

The George, Earley

Things are not improving for the residents of Earley and Woodley in need of a decent meal. Ate in there this week with hubby, and whilst the garlic bread with cheese was passable, the steak pies were unavailable and the chicken and bacon pies that arrived as a replacement were still frozen in the middle (yes, actual ice). They they forgot to bring us the replacements. Oh woe is me...

The Green Man, Hurst

Very pleasant setting adjoining farmland, friendly staff, lovely food at lunchtime. Car parking is at a premium so get there fast if you want a space off the road.
